Endling - Extinction is Forever

I give this recommendation with a strong disclaimer: This game is not for overly sensitive animal lovers. I already can think of two people I know very well who this game would wreck. That said... Endling: Extinction is Forever is a charming game in many aspects. The dialogue-free story telling builds an immersive experience playing as a mother fox trying to survive and care for her kits in a world ruined by nuclear fallout. The music is minimalistic, but soulful as it comes in and out of play, helping build the mood without dominating any scene. And the animations of the foxes are fluid and capture their body language and graceful movements remarkably well. As for the game play, it had has a clean and simple interface. There are a few times where the tooltips and hitboxes could be a bit persnickety, with the action button being context driven causing some minor irritation, such as whether or not I was close enough to a 'pounce' spot to snag a trash-diving rat, or activating a cub skill. The game wasn't too hard to get to the end, but I imagine getting some of the achievments will be a bit more tricky, which is almost the right difficulty level for me. There were a few times where I wish it hadn't given me cues to use certain actions and let me figure it out on my own, such as using the 'pet' button at certain points. Oddly, I found it a lot more distressing when I was killed by the furrier than by the scavenger; the lack of blood in the animation doesn't make it any less violent. But at the same time, I actually appreciate the horror left me with. It made me a lot more motivated to avoid him in the future. I'm not really very good at writing reviews, and not sure where to say this, but I just have to say it. I truly had tears running down my face at the end, though I suspected I was in for such an ending. Still there was just this tiny hope in me somewhere that there'd be some little sign of hope. Leaving the ending open like that, with no certainty or closure [spoiler]what becomes of the cubs after they move on from their dead mother[/spoiler] was a bold move, and I appreciate it. I was angry at first, but it was a good sort of anger. You know, that righteous indignation that makes me want to go sign up for some sort of 'help the environment' cause for all of... five minutes. This is what it is meant to do, I believe, and hopefully other people who bravely play this one will feel that impact more deeply than I. Play it. Then go find some way to make the world a better place so this game doesn't become a reality.
