About

Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship. Grow your fleet while exploring an expansive galaxy with hundreds of systems. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, mining asteroids, or plundering and capturing enemy ships.

Enter the 31st century and choose from one of multiple starting locations and backgrounds where you set out on your own journey as the captain of a new ship. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy at your own pace. The main story line alone takes about 8-16 hours to play through, with over a hundred hours worth of story content spread across the galaxy in the form of other story lines both big and small.

The game's content can be added to using the plugin system, which allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, missions, and more to the game. All of the game's content is built using the same system, so anything you see in the vanilla game can be done in a plugin. The capabilities of plugins are fully documented on our GitHub wiki.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). The game has been developed for over 10 years as a labor of love from hundreds of volunteer contributors. Updates occur regularly with three major updates every year. Over time, the game will continue to expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, artwork, gameplay mechanics, quality-of-life improvements, and more.

I really liked this game once I "got" it. It's very pleasant and well-done, and has its own identity. Strong "Mal Reynolds" fantasy. At first it seems like an Escape Velocity clone, but it is definitely emphasizing very different elements. I especially like how many missions are available on the Job Board, and how upgrading your ship unlocks the ability to accept more missions at once. I adore the random little stories about ferrying passengers around. At first I found the minimal ship controls and use of autopilot dull, more like an adventure game than a spaceship game, but it seems like that is more what this game is going for. Once I accepted it, it's relaxing in some ways. If I had constructive criticism it's that the interface and game state are not very readable. Everything is the same size, there is info everywhere, and my eye can't tell what to look at even though I'm certain it is a fairly simple game. For example, it takes an especially long time to sift through the info in the Outfitter and Shipyard screens, even though only a few numbers are important. That leads into my next criticism which is, after getting out of the basic ship, I am having a hard time seeing what my next goal could be. It's difficult to differentiate the various ships, and none of the game mechanics really advertise themselves, so I'm not sure what I could or should be doing. By contrast, its ancient predecessor, Escape Velocity, had quite obvious end-game faction ships that were super cool looking and story-lines to get them. I'm not really seeing that here. The ships are more gritty and realistic in the boring sense, but they do seem to have interesting trade-offs if you can squint at the shipyard for long enough to get a sense of what is going on.

A time devouring joy. Simple yet engaging, I have really enjoyed Endless Sky so far. A true sandbox game, go on adventures and advance the storyline, or just cruise the trade/passenger routs and rake in credits. It's modest system requirements allow you to play on more or less any system.
great game!
Of all the games I've played on PC (MacOS), Endless Sky is the only one I've played through at least a dozen times. And I'm still learning new ways of playing, including fleet management and new planets to discover. Anyone who played EV as much as I did, you'll love this game.
Freelancer in 2D. What's not to like?
Probably the best Free game on Steam. Would easily pay for it. Very interesting space captain/sandbox kind of game.
I LOVE FOSS
Exploring the galaxy is really fun, Combat is too fast and can be easily cheesed with numbers. Playing a space trucker is fun too.
Great free game, lots of options, strategic mindset, huge map, good quests
Sandbox game, long and interesting main story a lot things to discover and acquire
