Unapologetic ps2 platformer first with a dash of z-targetting / soulslike flask-heal juggling combat, then spiced up with bosses that have entire platforming dodge phases like an n64/ps1 era game. There's also a little pinch of metroidvania in the sense that you are told to retread old ground when you've finished an area boss and there are clearly marked upgrade paths/things you can't break from the start. Recommended difficulty is fair, you just need to get used to the fact that maybe you don't want to lock on all the time, and remember dodgeball. dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge Hard mode is basically double damage from what the enemies do on normal and their attack speed is relentless. It's very much a "do master clockwork after a first playthrough" so don't go into this thinking you'll breeze through that either.
Truly a loveletter to the PS2 3D platformer era. But still original enough to be it's own thing. This game really hits you right in the nostalgia and it's truly a delight to play. Couldn't have wished for more.
They totally nailed the "Hidden PS2 Gem Vibe" with this game. If this came out in 2002, I def would've bought it with my pocket money and would still tell people to play it because its so satisfying to play. The only thing I didnt liked was the combat outside of the boss fights. Later in the game I decided to put it back on normal because it was really getting frustrating and annoying with some enemies, but thats really the only "bad" thing I have to say about this game, otherwise its amazing. The story was nothing groundbreaking yet it kept me going and even made me shed a tear at the end. So well done Developer. The platforming is beyond satisfying. It just works and feels smooth, they knew how to design a great platforming experience without getting bored. Looking for the collectiables is also very fun and made me enjoy the platforming even more, will def do the 100% in this game. I highly recommend it for everyone who enjoys Jax & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, etc.
Honestly kinda underwhelming and janky as hell nostalgia bait
The game is a real breath fo fresh air - It sets out to do something and just does it. Both platforming and combat do feel a little "floaty" but nothing that would take away from overall experience. Leveldesign is beautiful, the story is good (if barebones to some degree) and the mechanics are fun overall. Some minor gripes of mine are: 1. Not having a minimap (or any sort of map) - This is completely subjective, I feel that would add some QoL. 2. Combat has "hard stops"; dodgeing, combos, counters freeze you with what feels like no I-Frames at times - no biggie but gets a little annoying in more "spammy" fights. 3. Light/glare is put to maximum. Wether it's godrays, bloom or glare of any kind it's so strong you dont see much of anything if one is on screen, and turning down gamma makes other sections completely dark, Now for some of the great things: 1. The artstyle is amazing - Everything just works. When things are supposes to be grand they really are - Color, contrast, VFX are used extremely well - Someone really wanted to make a good world/setting and every area in the game just shows that. (It's somewhere between Ratched and Clank industries and Alice in Wonderland surrealism mixed in with some "steampunk") 2. The story is cute - No spoilers; it's nothing mindblowing but it's there, you can follow it and make your own guesses if you explore a little, it has a steady flow and keeps you going. I'm writing this at ~20 hours of playtime, having 100% the game - It's not a hard game, collectibles are reasonably hidden (sometimes reasonably hard, sometimes in plain sight)
One specific collectible not having a checkmark system bothered me to no avail though
. Combat is fine once you work out the kinks. Platforming is nothing people will get stuck on for hours but wont feel unfullfilling. Overall I'm very happy with the final release - As I said a breath of fresh air for a casual bit of "nostalgic" gameplay from the PS2-ish era. P.S. On linux some cutscenes are bugged giving you an old TV-test static of sorts. I've heard this has to do with current Proton release steam uses and some people state they fixed it by swapping to GE-Proton. Cannot confirm the fix myself.
