About
Drone Sector fuses the gunship close air support role with the drone's observation and mission command. Inspired by the real-life AC-130 gunship and MQ-9 Reaper drone, it merges these powerful roles in a futuristic setting, where advanced technology and heavier firepower enable you to take on more complex and dangerous missions. While not a pure military simulator, the focus remains on tactical planning and execution, with greater flexibility in mission design and weaponry.
Guide your squads as they advance through hostile environments to achieve mission objectives. Command with precision, helping them avoid traps and eliminating high-priority threats with your overwhelming firepower. Outnumbered by enemy forces, you’ll need to maximize your technological superiority to turn the tide.
During each mission, you’ll need to make strategic decisions about resource gathering. Send your ground squads into buildings or key areas to collect vital resources and research documents—but this comes with risk. Stay too long, and you may lose your squad to overwhelming enemy forces. Decide when to extract and when to push your luck for valuable rewards.
Between missions back at base, upgrade your gunship, squads, and weapons. Manage your ammo production and research new technologies to improve your chances in the field.
Fluid, responsive gunship weapon controls

Drone Sector | Early Access Review | v0.1.5

Intro
Drone Sector is the latest entry in a small genre of games based on that one Call of Duty mission. Dubbed gunship simulators, this light-concept genre has been dominated by the mobile games industry and is packed with low-budget microtransaction slop. Drone Sector manages to avoid microtransactions and all their baggage to deliver a lightweight game as easy on memory as it is on lower-budget PCs. Developer Developed by Icosphere as their first mass-market game and published by MicroProse, which has an extensive catalog of military-themed games, Drone Sector is a competent and functional title with straightforward mechanics and a basic learning curve that takes about 30 minutes to climb. Visuals and graphics are clean and of high enough fidelity to look good on almost any monitor, with crisp, clean audio by FMOD that makes each weapon satisfying and the full scope of battles feel as chaotic as they are dynamic.
Primary Loop
Drone Sector combines RTS top-down command with ranged fire support options essential for ground elements to advance. The battle is almost entirely controlled by your gunship drone, which offers a wide selection of semi-realistic weapons inspired by or directly lifted from real-world systems. Players choose between controlling the gunship and issuing commands to ground elements, but cannot do both at the same time. In command mode, the gunship's weapons are retracted, making it much less detectable by anti-air systems. In fire support mode, signatures are enhanced, and every shot poses a risk of retaliation from hostile defenses. Allied Ground elements are almost always outnumbered and outgunned on their own, making the gunship essential to each mission's success. Missions follow a standard format, with an opening stealth phase that starts in command mode. Ground elements and the drone gunship can move and survey the area to develop a plan. Only the gunship can trigger an alarm response, allowing ground units some freedom to move and engage smaller hostile formations. Once the gunship is detected or opens fire, the alarm is raised, and a small initial wave of reinforcements will arrive. This begins a longer countdown phase before an overwhelming enemy response is triggered. When the timer expires, the mission doesn't fail, but the game will actively stack the deck against allies and the gunship, adding more and more reinforcements over time until all ground elements are defeated or the gunship is shot down. While not as rigid as a hard timer, the reinforcement phase will brutally punish every second spent over the limit, greatly increasing the risk of shootdown or a ground element wipe, which will fail the mission.
Sandbox Mode
Early Access provides two modes to play with: Sandbox acts as a creative mode, offering an unlimited budget and a mission generator that procedurally generates a large series of scenarios. A seed generator lets you create and share exact missions, but otherwise generates a unique encounter each time a mission is loaded. This mode also allows various difficulty modifiers, such as friendly fire and unlimited ammo, providing plenty of flexibility to play around with. This mode acts as a no-cost practice arena to test skills and experience endgame-style missions or weapons without committing to the alternative.
Career Mode
Career mode is the complete experience following a standard progression and research track. At the start, players select between Easy, Medium, and Hard modes, which govern the amounts of starting resources and research, as well as the friendly-fire settings enabled. Because missions are generated procedurally, each playthrough is unique. In this mode, players progress through a set of randomly generated missions to earn resources used to upgrade the gunship, purchase ammunition, and repair any damage taken. This process is moderated by an array of in-game currencies, such as warhead material and compute, while an overhead currency called labor hours imposes a global cap on the amount of ammunition, upgrades, and repairs that can be purchased in a given period. Nearly all upgrades and ammunition require at least one labor hour, with ten labor hours made available after each mission is completed. Every successful completion advances an escalation ladder that controls the enemy’s awareness and aggression. Regardless of difficulty, early missions see low-budget responses that are initially easy to defeat. Still, as escalation ratings increase, more powerful hostile units will appear on the map, some of which require special weapons or tactics to defeat and evade. Eventually, anti-air units appear on most missions and will react directly to the gunship rather than targeting allied units on the ground. You lose a mission when all available ground elements are defeated, and career mode when all available gunships or ground elements are destroyed, making tactical decisions important in the moment and strategic decisions key over the long game. Choosing the wrong upgrades, the wrong ammunition, or the wrong ground units can doom a mission and, over time, doom a career run.
Flow & Feel
Drone Sector is a well-refined concept that has been explored in mobile games for years; it's not a landmark product or a AAA experience and is priced accordingly. At about 15 dollars for early access, you are getting a well-optimized starting point for a product intended to grow over time. I have been deliberately vague about weapon stats and unit attributes because I fully expect these elements to be further balanced as the game evolves. The current set of features all work as intended, and over my hours of gameplay, it never crashed to desktop once, which is rare for an early-access game. Graphics support all common monitor resolutions, and my system was able to sustain a locked 144 FPS without straining resources. There were no hitches, visual artifacts, or rendering issues, making the game feel crisp, stable, and easy to become immersed in. While simple in concept, Drone Sector is flexible and offers many possibilities for the future. The current set of missions is based around hit-and-run or smash-and-grab operations that actively discourage heavy engagement. At times, over 100 individual tracks were visible on screen without any performance issues, and hundreds of targets were available in sandbox mode. This allows for large-scale combat operations, potentially involving multiple allied and hostile formations. Operating the gunship makes you feel powerful, at times comparable to piloting a miniature super destroyer in Helldivers II, offering insight into what it would be like from the ship's perspective as stratagems are selected and deployed. It's fun and engaging in the same way as the gunship missions from Call of Duty, but with a sense of identity that makes it preferable to CoD if all you want to do is play that mission.
Issues
A few minor issues were visible during gameplay, the most significant of which was AI pathfinding. Ground vehicles could sometimes struggle to navigate forests and urban environments, getting stuck on terrain or object features, and occasionally requiring me to babysit them through a tough area. Nothing ruined the experience, caused softlocks, or prevented progress, but pathfinding issues could ruin a mission if they were bad enough.
Conclusion
Drone Sector is an adequately built early access game that has passed the Alpha phase and feels well into its Beta. All core features are implemented and functional, but many require tweaking and additional development to be fully realized. What is available works great and leaves a great deal of confidence that more features will indeed be available soon.
