Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

This is my second attempt at playing DA:O--my first was two years ago on Game Pass, and I got frustrated with constant crashes and dropped it early on. This time, I appear to have found the right balance of mods and performance settings, and I haven't had a crash yet in the first 7 hours. Knock on wood that that'll continue. I really enjoy the setting, world-building, storytelling, and real-time with pause tactical combat of DA:O. I am not too far into the game, but I have now played through two of the different origin starting points if you combine my two starts, and I am really impressed by both of them--they are completely different, satisfying, bite-sized little narrative games in their own right. I am excited to actually finish the game this time! That said, I am disgusted that BioWare/EA are actively selling a game that requires mod support for basic functionality. Before you sink your teeth into this game, you essentially have to spend the first few hours of your playthrough on the Steam forums and NexusMods trying to make sure that you won't have a bad time once you hit "Play." This game is considered a classic of the genre, and there's no way that sales volume is low enough that they couldn't make some basic fixes to the port so that it works properly on PC hardware. There's a mod that allows the game to use more RAM. Is that not just an obvious fix for the supposed "ultimate" edition to include out of the box? The game itself holds up very well in 2026, but its technical state is in shambles. Buyer beware.
