The Death Of Art
There will be a TL;DR at the end. ~ Do not play this game. Do not download it. Never give it a cent of your money. Saying this hurts my heart on so many levels, but it’s true. ~ I remember playing this game when it first came out. The first Destiny was a bit of a bust - at least to me - it was interesting, but the hype train was way too strong and nobody was ready for the ships to be loading screens. After a hundred or so hours I had my customized sparrow with a purple void engine and end game armor - and I’d log in every now and again to take my whip out for a spin. When Destiny 2 dropped, it was bombastic, it was focused, it had toppled every issue that the original had and multiplied its best aspects. I enjoyed The Red War, which was the base game when it first came out - and I felt that it was a wonderful introduction to the experience on so many levels. About a hundred hours later I was grinding Gambit matches while traveling the surface of Mars during the Warmind campaign and loving the title. You have to understand, this entire experience was based off of a grind that looks like a massive mountain from the outside, but once you get into a groove the cycle becomes addictive. You’re always a deployment or two away from the next bounty being complete and by the time you’re ready to log off for the night, there’s that one challenge that you could complete with just one more match. Exploration tasks, world bounties, event hunting, nightfall missions, vanguard deployments, the crucible, raids, gambit - there was always something to do! I put more and more effort into the core experience until I unlocked my personal favorite weapon: Breakneck - a legendary gambit drop with a unique rampage that increased the autorifle fire rate and damage per kill. It was a beast in PVE and saved my caboose in PVP many times. It wasn’t the most broken, OP, or best - but it was mine and I had earned it over nearly 200 hours of grinding. And then I placed the game back on the shelf and moved forward for a time. Years later, I returned - and I wasn’t alone. There was a wide eyed and lovely woman at my side and I was teeming with excitement to show her this experience that effortlessly stole my time away. I got her a copy and booted it up with her and - There is no Red War… What? The priceless, emotional, and intense opening that set the stage for your guardian to reclaim their light, learn their abilities, and grow into this vibrant world is all completely gone. It is replaced with an incredibly boring and criminally tedious opening. That pretty girl never got through the tutorial after hours of suffering through veritable fetch quests. I felt heartbroken for her, heartbroken for the experience - but chose to hop on and enjoy the game myself. Curse Of Osiris was gone… Warmind was gone. I had quests open to go to Mars - and it was vaulted forever! My gear, the weapons and armor I worked so hard to earn, upgrade, spec, and build around have either been deleted from my storage (as with everyone else's) or their power levels have been capped to ensure these things could never be wielded in any serious manner. The experience that I loved, the story and enemies I fought, the worlds that I explored, the adventures that I enjoyed - deleted. They didn’t fade to time, they were not casualties to circumstance, they were not shut down for lack of players - they were heartlessly deleted and callously overwritten. The game was once a premium experience with an upfront cost and some cosmetic in-game whaling, but now it is a free-to-play gacha title. Dime a dozen and full of predatory behavior - worst of all being a kernel level anti-cheat that ostensibly writes away the ownership of your computer to the corporate overlords in charge of Bungie. This, in and of itself, is all the review that you’ll need. Destiny 2 was - WAS a wonderful game that I could have easily recommended. It was addictive, it was satisfying, it was interesting, and there was a world of opportunity full of satisfying combat and well written factions. Do you know how much I love Destiny 2? I have a baby Fallen plushy and 5 of the physical Grimoire books. I love them. I loved the game I came by to play the game just a bit more and pay my final respects - as it is now a live service game with no more live service… a “dead service” game some call it. It asking to install kernel level anti-cheat with paperwork reserving the right to strap a bomb to my motherboard - hard pass. I can’t reminisce - but I can tell you something. This is a game all about grinding to earn quality loot, empower your character, and explore the world. It routinely destroys the loot you’ve earned, nerfs the progress of your character, and deletes the world that you come to love and grow familiar with. Games are more than just photos, movies, music - they are a multi-faceted artform that can be experienced. When the greedy suits in charge of Destiny 2 order vast swaths of the game to be deleted from existence, they are destroying those things - they are destroying music, visuals, the experience. They are destroying Destiny 2 There is an insidious darkness that is not content with manipulating customers or “enshittifying” goods/services to achieve a better bottom line; there is an evil that is more than happy to erase beauty and human experiences from the world. It takes the strength of a Guardian to stand up and defy it. ~
TL;DR
While I once would have rated Destiny 2 at 7/10 - a Good game, today it’s… 1.5/10 Destiny 2 has become a Repugnant game. I loved this game - I fell in love with this world and my heart breaks for what it has become but… … if you give this game a single cent, if you play it at all, if you even download it onto your computer - you are supporting the corporate destruction of art. Don’t do it.
cheaters running rampant throughout pvp, fireteam finder is dead on pve. devs abandoned it. don't bother.
Even though Bungie is gay and decided to stop updating this... It's still pretty good for what its worth.
Best Game by Damn it. Sony
