About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

This is one of the biggest nostalgia kicks I have had in years, I played the original to death on my Amiga, A game that really look and sounds far better than it had any right to do for a mid 80:s game. And sure, the tactics is a bit lacking and it is jank as hell sometimes, and it's pretty difficult the enemy AI is out for blood and I still don't understand how you are suposed to beat the jousting consistently for example, and raiding and rescuing maidens is pretty much only viable as Geoffrey Longsword. But enough of the original. Here we actually get three games in one. The original Amiga version, pretty faithfully ported in all it's great pixel art, the SID chip score that slaps and all the glorious flaws. Next we have an enhanced version, that polish most of the originals features and makles it a lot less jank, but for the most part it seams to be fairly similar. But the standout feature is a roguelike version of the original that looks like it can be pretty interesting. I have for obviuous reasons only dabbled in it and I personally would have been fine with just the original, but that in all honestly probably not enough to warrant a purchase unless you have memories of the original. I'm not sure if the rogue like game is enough to win some people over, I'll leave that for someone less nostalgia damaged or someone who put dozens of hours in it. But honestly this is the perfect way to go for making a new version of a classic. Offer the original, a enhanced version and a reimagined in one package. It might not be for you, but it certinly is for me.

You cant transfer units into your army, travel around and transfer into owned castles or towers like you can in the NES and C64 games. I guesss the original amiga game would not have been my favorite. I also prefer the jousting in the NES version As for kingdom mode. I don't like the meh card game that needs playing in order to win a battle. They sould have expanded in other ways onto the base game. For instance like Belfortis which is a strategy game clearly inspired by Defender of the Crown but just did that, improved upon the stratey.
several key elemenst of the retro version are missing (i.e. health bars, info about the amount of hits at the siege, etc) and the so called kingdom version is a deep disappointment. i was hoping for a refined strategy and tactical elements and instead there is a clumsy strategic overwiev which doesn´t make the game any deeper and an awful and disappointing card combat instead of field battles.
Retro mode is based on Amiga version, which looks and sounds the best, but lacks important features added in future releases. PC would be a much better choice here, especially since the "Classic" mode is in fact based on the PC version! This is still a very fun game, as long as you remember that it's older than democracy in Eastern Europe and temper your expectations, or you're an ♥♥♥♥♥♥ like me who played it in good old days and is just eating up nostalgia. Keep in mind that there isn't much.. gameplay here, it's very barebones, and a single run will take you like 40 minutes. I got a few hours out of it for nostalgia's sake and that's it. The new gameplay mode is likely used to justify the price, but since it bored me after 20 minutes, I'm not exactly sure if that was a good idea. I don't regret paying release price for this, because I want to support the developer, but YMMV.
Until these Devs get Kingdom mode "Raid" timebox correct and not bugout as an alleged misclick... This will stay a thumbs down without a recommendation. It's an easy fix, and making something bugged is not a difficulty setting, its pathetic development. The rest of Kingdome Mode is surprisingly better than I expected, addictive and astronomically better than the other game-modes. Classic Mode is actually repetitive with the extra choices not really improving the game play much, and retro mode was better in the original NES version in the mid 1980's. Can you imagine that? I can, it's just another dime a dozen incomplete on release, games.
One of my all time favorite games back to life! I don't know if I could count the number of hours I spent playing this game. Just awesome to see some of the cutscenes for the first time 40 years later. Bonus to have new editions of the game that I can explore. Overall would recommend this game if you like nostalgic game play the way it "used to be".
It is a tough call. and I hate this review..from a nostalgy perspective it is a must buy, but... ...the retro modus (the original) suddently was far too easy. I won it in my 1st run after 10-15 minutes. On Amiga i cannot remember to win it at all. ...the classic modus is retro in beautyful...to be honest, it feels cheap. ...the kingdom modus is an interesting concept but to be honest...it might keep me interested one more run and that might it be. It does not trigger me to just play it more. I think memory made me more interested, but after trying it in consider to refund it. 16.99 Euro is too much for a game. I might buy it again when its reduced to 5 Euro.
Great memories from the Amiga 500 version, thank you for remaking this special game!
