About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

A remake I longed for. It works on Steam Deck. Don't expect deep gameplay, though the Kingdom Mode is a fresh take on the original game. A whole victory playthrough can be done in less than 30 minutes. The opponents are also not really smart, so game might be too easy at the moment. Nevertheless, a lot of nostalgic feelings make me recommend the game. 7 out of 10.
Kjempe bra spill. Nye nostalgi for pengene.

a fun little tribute to a classic game.
Ich sage es mal so es ist fürn Oa........ Schlecht sehr schlecht da spiele ich lieber am Emulator und die neue version zum Ko.... Übergeben
The gameplay is varied enough that it's fun for multiple games. It takes a couple of games to figure it out, but once you've got the hang of it then the whole thing just opens up. Fun from a bygone age, back when games could just be games and not digital live service storefronts.
I've tried retro mode, and it feels like retro. Jolly good. I then tried classic mode. I'm sorry, but this is really bad. The good; the graphics are nice enough, and the music is nice. Swordplay. In classic the person that clicks the most wins. Here it's random. Sometimes powerattacks breaks blocks, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can parry attacks, sometimes you can't. Sometimes you get stunned when attacked, sometimes you don't. This goes for both my and the enemies attacks. There might be mechanics to it, but it seems completely random. It's perhaps better than classic, but if so not by much. Jousting. Jousting ends so fast. You don't know if you've won or not based on the game, you read it from a popup. After having done perhaps 10 jousts I still have no idea what is going on. Winning and losing is completely random. You can aim left and right, but what it does is unclear. You can lean left and right, but what it does is unclear. They've managed to implement a worse jousting mechanic than the one in classic. Jolly good. Siege. Yay, the catapults, what can go wrong... well... unclear... new mechanic, instead of hitting the top of the wall you hit a specific point. But, whether hitting that point has an impact or not is random. Sometimes you can hit it spot on, and nothing happens, sometimes you can hit above it and the wall crashes down, sometimes you hit below it. One time I hit exactly the same spot twice, and the second time it worked. One could think that the number of catapults matter, but nah, 1 or 20 catapults has the same outcome. I like the idea with the weak point, but since the effects are completely random the implementation is worse than on classic. Battles, new modes added. Feroucious charge, flanking etc... the effects seems... unclear. It seems to do absolutely nothing. The best approach seems to be to leave it on standard till the fight is over. Balance. Nothing is done about the balance issues. The main strategy is still to build infantry and nothing else. I can respect this since it's how you did it in classic, but feels a bit sad that knights have absolutely no purpose in life. Kingdom mode. This mode is a deckbuilder card and dice game. You heard me right. While the concept is a bit interesting as a game for a mobile it's not what anyone going for Defender of the Crown would be aimed at. In Classic mode mechanics are obscured and relies too much on RNG; Kingdom mode is nothing but RNG. While there might be some skill to it, like all card/dice games there is a lot of rng. In my latest attmpt I did the first castle where the enemy reliably got 3-4 times as high score as me because rng had blessed his deck to the extreme. This game is interesting in a way, but not when I wanted to play Defender of the crown. I was hoping for a new take on the classic, not a game where everything was replaced with a deckbuilder. ### I can't help but to think, if they had focused less on making a new completely different deck builder game, the remake could be really nice. If they release a couple of upgrades where they fix... jousting, raiding and sieges it would be worth playing for Classic mode at least.
I first played this game in 1986 when my father downloaded it to his office PC...and what memories I had playing this game. Needless to say...the mouse and keyboard controls for Retro mode are god awful. The mouse clicks barely work in menus, and trying to select a campaign is even worse. DO NOT BUY...not worth it even for the 10 minutes of being 6 years old again. Thanks BTB...you couldn't even revitalize a classic 80's game.
yep i remember this game the original from 40 years ago played it on Atari and the Amegia's it is just as infuriating as it was back then and ive only tried retro so far ok i did try the enhanced for few secs but it angered me, dont think newer gamers will like the game but for older players who remember the game yeah the Retro is just like it, was doing well then i lost my dammed castle game over brings back fond fond memories
bien, plein de nostalgie, sympa le nouveau mode avec les dés, mais pour moi c'est un peu cher pour ce que c'est. ca reste un tres bon jeu pour faire des parties rapides quand on a pas trop le temps de jouer.
played Defender of the Crown on the Amiga 500 mini AGS, (Amiga Game Selector) and now having this on Steam is great, had fun with the other gamemodes, brings a wider view of the game
