Cube Escape: Paradox

super nice puzzle game with nice twisted touches

Cube Escape: Paradox is a free point and click puzzle game where we play as detective Dale Vandermeer after waking up in a strange room with no memory of how we got there. We have to search the room, find objects and solve puzzles while slowly putting together what happened to us. It is part of the larger Rusty Lake story, so there is quite a bit going on underneath the simple room escape setup. The puzzles are easily the best part of the game. We have to look closely at everything around the room and work out how different objects and clues connect together. A lot of the solutions are weird in the best possible way, and finding the answer ourselves feels really satisfying when everything suddenly makes sense. The atmosphere is also excellent. The room is dark, strange and full of little details that make us feel like something is seriously wrong. The music, sound effects and unsettling characters all work together really well, and the game manages to feel creepy without constantly relying on jump scares. The story is another reason we wanted to keep going. Dale is trying to recover his memories while dealing with an old enemy, and the game slowly starts connecting what we are seeing to the wider Rusty Lake world. There are also plenty of little connections to the short film that was released alongside the game, which makes the whole thing feel more connected. The artwork fits the game perfectly too. Everything has that hand drawn Rusty Lake style, with strange faces, dark colours and some genuinely creepy images. It is not trying to look realistic, but that actually makes the weird parts feel even more unsettling. The voice acting also adds a lot to the atmosphere. The biggest problem is that the free part is not very long. Chapter 1 is free, while Chapter 2 is a separate paid chapter, so we do not get the complete story without paying for the rest. The free chapter is still a proper experience, but it can feel like we have stopped just as the mystery is getting more interesting. Some of the puzzles can also be frustrating. There are moments where we know what we need to do but have no idea where the game wants us to find the next clue. We can end up clicking around the room looking for something we missed, which can take away from the satisfaction a little. Overall, Cube Escape: Paradox is a really strong puzzle adventure with clever puzzles, an excellent atmosphere and a strange story that makes us want to know more. The free chapter is fairly short and some puzzles can be confusing, but the quality of the experience is high and it is a great introduction to the Rusty Lake style. Rating: 7.7/10
