A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

This is an incredibly polished, fleshed out, and inspired game that feels like an old console classic. There is a ton to explore, lots of sidequests and collectibles, bonus challenges, and completionist rewards. It's very easy to drop in and drop out, kind of like an MMO, which is appropriate considering it is meant to emulate one. While I think that the combat itself is only decent, I appreciate how much you can control engagement with it. The combo system is an interesting risk vs reward balance. The bosses present some decent challenge and have fun mechanics. Even basic enemies can be troublesome if you jump in underprepared. The controls are fluid and responsive, though the navigation (platforming) takes getting used to due to the perspective. The crafting is a bit obtuse, but it's never all that necessary. By far my favorite aspect of the game is the dungeons. They feel like the most professional part of this game, brilliantly designed to put your puzzle skills and understanding of powers to the test.
peak from beginning to end, truly the ultimate experience

10/10 play it and have a blast. the story is incredible
I bought this game twice because it is one of the only few games I've ever seen that captures the kind of DS era nostalgia I'm looking for in a game nowadays without straight up buying DS games that have been remastered or rereleased.
If you like any action game, play this. The only people I wouldn't recommend this to are people who primarily play slower strategy/puzzle games because they likely won't enjoy the fast-paced combat here. The story is good with excellent characters, the music is amazing, the puzzles are great, and the best combat system in any game I've ever played. The only complaints I have are pretty minor; The 2.5D perspective can sometimes be hard to gauge even using shadows to help, and trying to 100% complete the game is a pain. Eat every food item without knowing what you have/have not eaten thus far, find every trader/chest but some are in an area that becomes completely inaccessible at one point.
Its peam im afraid
I really like basically everything about the game but I give this positive review very tentatively because of one section where they make you do 2 dungeons back to back (the dungeons are already very long) as someone who was not the biggest fan of t he puzzle aspect to begin with this is torturous and idk if I can get past it, I don't know why they made it like this
What a nice little gem. This is such a charming game! Thanks to the IronPineapple for recommending it! This game feels so cozy while also scratching my itch for action. The gameplay and combat is really good and leveling up actually feels like it makes me stronger, unlike a lot of "RPGs" out there that make quests feel meaningless and mundane; this game feels well balanced and the quests reward you with meaningful upgrades and XP. I will for sure be finishing this game and I will be looking forward to playing Alabaster Dawn when it is a little more developed with more chapters and gameplay. I am only 8 hours in so far but I will add an update to my review when I get farther along.
After an ungodly amount of hours and several playthroughs on the switch, as well as many more to come on PC, this game is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gem and one of my favorites of all time. Though I have a strong emotional bias towards this game, I'm trying to be objective when I say the gameplay scratches an itch I didn't know was there. All of the "combat arts" (special attacks) are all very well designed (...for the most part) and are immensely satisfying to use correctly and at just the right moment. This includes both the simple little spin dance AND the giant lightning bolt evisceration attack. You absolutely will have times you get frustrated trying to figure out how to reach a certain spot. You absolutely will miss a level 3 combat art in the stupidest way possible. You absolutely will spend hours grinding for equipment you're going to sell in <5 hours playtime. It's all part of the experience. Moving on... The protagonist, Lea, is somehow a very emotionally complex character despite being almost completely mute, and the way the rest of the cast interacts with her I've always thought was so unique and precious. It was her that sold the experience for me, and somewhere along the line I began seeing her as someone I genuinely cared about, and not just a face on a screen. I'm not going to lie to you and say that CrossCode is 100/10, or that it's perfect in every way, but this one hell of an immersive and fun RPG with a really touching and interesting story about self-expression and individuality. If it's convenient, buy it, and play it. If you love story RPG's, you'll (probably) love this just as much as I did. So... Go fill in the blanks my review left and see for yourself why so many people love this game. PS: If you ever remove Emilie from your party, I'm blocking you
An insane amount of filler that bogs down what's probably a decent game. The puzzles and challenges aren't hard but traversing the world is incredibly tedious because of the elevation mechanic in a 2D game and having to run through the same exact path 50 times to collect chests, complete quests, and progress forward in the world. There are multiple instances in the first few hours of gameplay where you need to run through the same 2-3 minute long path to collect a chest, kill some enemies or plants for quest/crafting items, and reach a new zone because the path has mutually exclusive jump off points that don't allow you to get back up and continue. So you need to loop back (sometimes in a different zone altogether) and make the run back. If you miss a jump because you couldn't tell which of the 5+ elevations you were on, then have fun running the same long path yet again to get back to where you fell off. I really enjoyed the Alabaster Dawn demo and figured I would try the studio's first game while I waited for Alabaster Dawn to finish early access. But man, I don't think I have the patience for something this boring. Your character has zero agency and doesn't even talk. I got filtered by the boredom. I feel like this game would have been more interesting if the main character spoke and the world was more straight forward. Just let me fight some bosses. Literally the only fun part of this game...
