About

Whilst this release focuses mainly on what would have happened if the Cold War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact had gone 'hot' between 1945 and 1990 it also features scenarios from the fringes of the Cold War. Lead units into battle from the Northern tip of Norway in the early 80's to the Golan Heights in '73, Germany in the 80's to Vietnam in the 60's and more.
Command historically accurate formations from Company to Battlegroup size across decades of conflict.
Easy to learn, hard to master turn based tactics without complex Logistics or spreadsheets of obscure data to wade through.
Classic Hex and Counter Board Wargame feel.

Over 400 real world units and formations from more than 15 nations and factions so far.
5 decades of conflict.

Turn based battles across 40+ handcrafted single player scenarios (So far) plus 20 missions in 4 mini campaigns along with a randomised battle generator.
500m hex size and Platoon / Troop sized Unit Counters.

Plenty of challenging scenarios across a range of Theatres and timelines, including missions set in conflicts and timelines rarely seen in computer wargames such as Angola, Grenada and Norway as well as central Europe and the Middle East.
Multiple computer player battle plans for each scenario to keep Commanders on their toes.
Use Recon units to scout the way, push transports as close as you dare, maybe covered by smoke, unload your infantry to take objectives whilst your armour flanks the foe and artillery bombards targets of opportunity... Or sit and watch as the enemy does the same. With attack, defence and meeting engagement missions, command formations from Company to Battlegroup size across decades of warfare.

Fast fun light wargame. The turn limit keeps it from working well as a tactical game, though. How can the player make good tactical decisions when they have to move forward as fast as they can and just hope to out RND the AI player to take the objectives in time to win a scenario. Coupled with the fact that you can't move forward in a campaign without winning, leads to repeating each battle until you figure out the optimum solution...or (usually) just get lucky. This completely ruins the feel of playing a campaign and reduces the experience to an exercise in repetition. Merely extending the number of turns allowed in each scenario might fix this issue and allow for better play mattering.
It is good fun. I actually took part in the Cold War and I love how if you actually apply the tactical doctrine of the time you can see them work as intended.... sometimes. I love the game. I want to see it expanded upon. If you could add a "Team Yankee" expansion or even make the maps huge and have a "Red Storm Rising" expansion well....... Just take my money now. :)

Cold War Battles is a fun, fast, but decently detailed game about battles in the post WW2 landscape. While it is centered on the NATO/Warsaw Pact conflict, there are a number of interesting scenarios from all around the globe and through various time periods. The game is centered on being a very accessible to new wargamers and providing quick battles that can challenge the grogs out there. Battles are focused on the primary ground forces at a company to battalion sized units fighting on small maps fitting the force structures. There are tanks, recon vehicles, ATGM vehicles, self-propelled artillery and a number of infantry variations. While air units are absent, these types of fights would not see close air support in most cases and even helicopters would require that additional layering in of air defense assets that would up complexity for users. That said it would be nice down the road to see them and AD assets added to the game and maybe be relegated to "advanced" scenarios and campaigns. Speaking of campaigns, the game has a few and I have yet to try them and will come back and comment on those later when I play some. There is also a quick battle system and I will look at that soon as well. Right now there are a good number of scenarios to go through. The scenarios are turn based and have a set number of turns. This point has ruffled some user feathers, but being a board game like adaptation there needs to be a means of setting an operational tempo and that why almost every game has limits. Military operations run on orders to do action X by time Y so some other action can follow. Some folks dislike "time" pressure, but that's what wargames at a tactical level require. It might be worth adding an option to continue after the set turn limit with a loss of VP objective points per turn to denote the loss of operational tempo. In the end, the game is a great "beer and pretzels" war game. Easy enough for newcomers to wargames to play and enough fun and challenge for the Sun Tzu's of the world to enjoy in 10-15 minute chunks. If you like wargames or are interested in learning, you can't go wrong getting Cold War Battles.
I would thoroughly recommend this product as an easy to learn and fun to play fast paced solo tactical wargame. I had the opportunity to try the demo before the game launched and was able to make a number of suggestions to the designer about improving it some of which he took on board. The potential for their adding extra scenarios and nations to the game is very encouraging and I look forward to seeing it refined and expanded further.
If you like battle games like Team Yankee or Flames of War, you'll love this. I think the designers did a brilliant job of creating a game that is playable but still has enough realism to make it fun and convincing. Recommended!
--> This game runs in Manjaro Linux (X11) without proton or wine! <-- Well I have to admit, this is money well spent. When the demo was released I was particularly drawn in to the Rafah '67 scenario because of how easy it looked to snatch up a fast win. I was wrong. VERY wrong. I played a single demo scenario when it was removed. Bummer. So once the game was released I HAD to buy it. I was curious to see just how far this developer went to adding many more numerous scenarios and he has given us some tasty stuff. After checking out all the scenarios I decided once again to tackle Rafah '67. Once again the A.I. cleaned my clock BUT this time I decided to pay a little more attention to what was going on. It seems your tanks are the fastest way to get yourself obliterated from the dirt you're standing on and I began to move them BACK away from the cities a bit, letting the troops handle the basics for now. This was game three and I was NOT about to give up so easily. To a point it finally paid off as I gained a near win and a steam achievement beeped to me. Good enough, for now. I still want to kick the A.I.'s butt and I'll be back for more. I'm NOT done with you A.I. - NOT by a long shot. I WILL find your WEAKNESS and then it's "hammer time"! If you're just learning war gaming or a grognard, this game is a TOTAL BLISS. I am not into higher end war games but for some reason, but this game puts them to shame as far as I'm concerned so Cold War Battles is TOP OF THE LINE for me! The CLEAN and minimalist graphics won me over fast. The simplicity or the controls to play is TOP NOTCH and EASY to understand. Don't let the basic looking graphics turn you away from this game! It's a complete keeper in my book and I have so many more scenarios to play! The sounds are also VERY well done and fit perfectly into the game. Everything is so well balanced here you're literally losing out on not playing this. Simply put, i find this game near perfect as no game truly is, but this one is damned close! To anyone just starting out with war gaming, I highly recommend reading about all the tanks, trucks, cars, personnel and anything else you can. It's not only very interesting, it will show you whom and what has more power BUT - that doesn't mean they will help you out in the long run. Sometimes the basic troops can come in and just wipe areas out where you least expect it. Just when you think a tiny squad of soldiers can't do anything, rest assured it may just be the winning tactic you need to finish! This is extremely well done in this game! I enjoy the limited amount of turns / time you have for many different reasons. One, you want to sit down and have a quick skirmish and this is the way. Two, It's not going to take hours for you to complete a battle. Three, learn each and every scenario as you can. By taking turns, learning the basics and watching the A.I. do it's stuff, you can finally understand what may or may not be the way to a victory. Also, learn what you have at your advantage as well. If it seems like you have so little and the A.I. has so much, that means nothing. it's HOW you utilize your strategy in each battle and this game pulls this off without a hitch. Like I said, to me the game is near perfect. The developer is very kind and cares about what you have to say as he is actively listening and talking to everyone that plays. He even spoke with me via discussions which is not expected but they were kind enough to even acknowledge that I had something to say. It proves this developer CARES DEEPLY about what they have created and want to keep the fire of the game burning. That to me is dedication and it shows. The developer should be very proud of themselves for reaching out and speaking to us. I HIGHLY recommend this game to any war gamer. I will admit I have war games that I STILL can't figure out but this one truly pulled me in. The basics are on the top layer of the game but the meat and potatoes are hidden within with it's ruthless A.I. and it's fun. Take a chance and check this game out and you won't be sorry. FOR BEGINNERS: Check out Quitundo in the miscellaneous selection. It's not too bad or tough but to grab both cities is NOT simple because your opponents block your way via the road. As for Rafah '67, this one is VERY tough but enjoyable. For some reason I still like this one.
Fun, plays easily. In future updates would like to see the ability to put in obstacles. Perhaps vary the combat result to include a 'pin' by arty against infantry. Mortars seem a bit too lethal at times. Would very much like to see some mid - late 70's Sino-Soviet scenarios. If you do a future hypothetical do the PRC vs Russia with the PRC on the offense into the Russian far east. All in all, a good game. Thanks!
It's a very nice little game. Diversity, good, basic combat resolution, tactically rewarding. Simple. If you're foolish and aggressive you'll get burned. If you prep with artillery, use smoke, it can go better for you. I would tinker with some of the values , but that can all be adjusted. I would like to see morale and unit quality at some point. More scenarios from Vietnam. Again, it's fun. I'm still playing it.
Finally, a simple and fast tactical wargame on computer. Very much similar to SPI Firefight but in larger scale and no artillery planning.
Very fun! The simplicity is what makes this, looking forward to more content.
