About
Engage enemies from afar in this 2D action platformer set in a steampunk/retro futuristic world. Clockwork Ambrosia takes inspiration from the metroidvania genre but adds a new twist: players can customize their weapon behavior with a plethora of modifications.

Iris can equip four different weapons: the versatile Pulse Breaker, the armor-shattering Missile Launcher, the rapid-fire Revolver, and the trick-shot Grenade Launcher. Unique characteristics and different firing modes add basic utility to your kit.

Players don’t hunt for ammo count upgrades in Clockwork Ambrosia. Instead, unearthing secrets reveals weapon mods - powerful items that reprogram your weapon’s behavior. Each mod is different, updating how your weapon behaves in more complex ways than “damage +1”.

Should you add a mod that powers up your bullets? Great, but it disables a round! Wait a minute, let’s add a mod that fires extra bullets whenever you disable a round… Oh! And now you’re firing multiple bullets too, so you can use the mod that fires an extra bullet whenever you fire multiple! Oh, and that means…!
ahem
So this is just one small example (of the thousands) of unique builds players can craft through discovery and ingenuity.

Upgrade weapons to unlock even more mod slots, further unleashing your weapon’s potential.
Players also unlock a variety of movement abilities, from the classic wall jump to special gloves that let you stride along ceilings - and much more. Then customize your equipment even further, adding armor, healing powers, and other game-changing effects!

Scour the island for secrets. Make new friends. Defeat gorgeously animated foes. All while crafting a loadout for Iris that is built to your taste!

Honestly, I wish Steam officially just used a five-star rating system or something. I would give this game roughly a 4/5 for what it is (but there are certainly superior Metroidvanias out there). Nonetheless, I am judging this on the merits of it coming from an indie studio, and this is their first official title. Overall, I think this is a great Metroidvania in its own right. It has charm, and it does remind me a lot about about old GBA games. There is a classic feeling with its presentation and sound design. The main gimmick of the game is you can "customize" your guns to have different functions. The main treasure you want to acquire are weapon parts. They can range from having faster fire rate, more shots fired, changing the angles of your shots, special functions and so forth. You end up with four weapons total, but you will just end up most likely having your main gun with an explosive weapon as your secondary to break armored enemies down. Some of these weapon effects can be really cool. There is some fun to be had with experimenting with what you come across, but there is sadly a redundancy to the abundance of weapon parts as a whole. Namely, you get so many weapon parts, and some weapon parts just are objectively weaker than others. Some are too gimmicky for their own good (there are some that let you fire behind you, but what good does that do in realistic situations when you want to advance past the room with what is in front of you?). By the end, I was content with the guns I had, and a lot of the extra weapons I would come across would never really be used because I already found my OP guns that are going to be more powerful if I do not mess with my guns any further. If I have to be completely frank, it is too easy to break the game's guns. You will get to a point where you will steamroll enemies down with projectiles flying in all kinds of funky angles. Bosses can also just melt to you when you get enough firepower. The bosses in this game are quite interesting and well-animated with a lot of fun attack patterns, but the game is really lacking in this department with the quantity. I think this game could have tossed in a few more bosses to break up some of the areas a bit more. Finally, I have to say a lot of my gripes (if any) stem from the game's lack of clarity with the map itself. For one thing, this game does not have quest markers on the map. This would have helped a lot. Like, maybe some highlighted areas as reasonable clues would have been nice. I burned through a lot of time getting lost, and I hate to admit to me looking up YouTube videos to figure out where I had to go next at parts. As a really egregious example, I accidentally found the warp function in the game like past the 3/4 portion of my playthrough after I had to explore the map manually. It was quite annoying I could not use the warp areas I came across here and there. After finally reaching the specific spot on the map, I got the warp ability after the fact. Perhaps this was just a me problem, but man. It did not feel good. Also, I wished the areas were labeled on the map function with their names when you hit the map button to check (and you are going to be referencing the map a lot). Yeah, the map has like so many colors, and I am not going to remember each and every area's name at the top of my head. There is a reason why other Metroidvanias these days just tell you the name of the areas so you do not get lost like that. I am not saying this game needed to hold my hand more, but I did feel like I wasted time exploring spots because the game wants you to venture around, but the tradeoff is you will just run around aimlessly. But in the end, I do think this is a good game if you want a functional Metroidvania. It is far from perfect. There is not much of a story to it, and some of the sore spots are just a lack of in-game clarity. Nevertheless, it is fun to go blastin' with unique guns, and traversal was a blast once you get enough upgrades.

I enjoyed the concept of building your own weapon, although some of the modifications can really break the game. By the end, I was literally shredding through everything with zero problems. The map can be annoying to navigate since there aren't names of the areas, and also the amount of grinding needed to upgrade everything is a lot, but other than that, it was a really good game!
I did enjoy the game. I grew up playing megaman and this might be the closest megaman in a metroidvania. I like the progression but the boss fights around mid game became easier when you got tons of weapon mods which make the game too easy. I did like the story even though it only progress on introduction and near the ending since majority of the game is exploration. It just in the end I think there more explanation needed to develop. Anyway any metroidvania fan just go buy it for its cheap price its worth it.
Brilliant metroidvania with great, detailed level design and varied combat options. It feels like open world MegaMan X with so many mods to customize guns, I already know I go for another playthrough. Much care was put into making each area unique and fun to explore, every path, room, tresure and puzzle are easy to remember due to being unique in some way. Loot is made smart, always rewarding as most of the gun mods we find can be used through the whole game. Very refreshing, polished experience!
It was a miracle I stumbled upon this game as I absolutely loved it Metroidvania + Mega Men X style combat + some light puzzle platformer elements + crafting and weapon customization - a mix that really scratch my itch for something like that. As much as I like a lot of other metroidvania this combo is rare I had a lot of fun traversing the map (the controls are done quite well among other things) and enjoyed discovering new stuff, the abilities are varied and provide an interesting but not frustrating twist on familiar things. The map does not have a lot of detail - I had an impression that it is by design, I quite enjoy reexploring the places in metroidvanias and making up my own system for markers - but I understand that some players would prefer some modern QoL features that are not present Fast travel is a bit too hidden and the interface for it is a bit frustrating and takes getting used to Where the game truly shined for me was the weapon customization - I thoroughly enjoyed finding a combo to cheese every boss The story is minimal, but tells a decent steampunk story starting with airship captain getting stuck on the island full of killer robots. The plot does not distract you much from gameplay with loads of dialog or cutscenes, but does its job pretty well; characters are pretty charming.
I give this one a solid B-. The visuals are charming, the game is reasonably lengthy, the world is large and worth exploring, the challenge is there, in the beginning at least, and some of the puzzles were tricky. Customizing the four gun types has its charm. But once you unlock enough mods for your weapons and multiple equipment slots, combat becomes trivial, which I guess is the point. The weapons were interesting enough, but the missile launcher with the Cerberus and homing mods (among others) made every other weapon largely worthless (although setting up the Revolver with infinite rapid fire and armor piercing helped a lot during the final boss fight). It was also fairly easy to set up armor in such a way that I became virtually impossible to kill. I encountered several bugs during my playthrough, some that forced lost progress. Got stuck inside walls underwater, often the controls would completely stop responding (I played entirely on Steam Deck) and near the end of the game, I often experienced inexplicable heavy slowdown, seemingly for no reason at all, as I transitioned between rooms. These were temporary and not too debilitating, and I did finish the game. Overall, a solid Metroidvania that just needs a bit of tightening up here and there to knock out the technical issues, but perfectly playable and pretty fun most of the time.
I've sorely missed these kind of games, it's one of the best Metroidvanias I've played in YEARS. Perfectly captures that feeling SotN gave of starting with nothing and feeling invincible by the end. Full video review: https://youtu.be/NS-QOZZ0SrM
Simply one of the best games of its type (metroidvania, search action, whatever you prefer) I've played. The core gun modding system is fun to tinker with; it feels like being an inventor, and when you hit upon the right solution to a "problem" (a boss, an enemy gauntlet) via some combo of modifications there is a real "eureka" feeling to it. Spectacular music, lively pixel art that brims with character down to each individual enemy, and a huge map to explore at a nicely calibrated pace that matches one's increasing ability to move across it. Basically, if you are a metroidvania fan, don't sleep on this.
HHHHHHUUUUUGGGGEEEE map to explore! Secrets and chests to open every other second it feels like. Controls feel smooth, combat is fun, and the weapon mods let you customize it your way. Clocks in around 15-20 hours depending on exploration. No real difficult platforming, this is all about exploration and a few easy puzzles.
