Trys but fails

Chowderchu is an indie platformer that wholeheartedly embraces its eccentric nature. Developed and published by Ryan Jensen, this 2016 release presents itself as a magical journey unlike anything else on Steam. Centered around the adventures of Chowderchu and the enigmatic Baz the Wise, the game immediately establishes an offbeat tone that never lets up. Rather than relying on traditional fantasy storytelling, it throws players into a whimsical world where strange characters, unusual mechanics, and a sense of unpredictability are the main attractions. It is the kind of game that feels handcrafted by someone with a very specific creative vision, and that individuality is apparent from beginning to end. The gameplay is where Chowderchu truly distinguishes itself from its contemporaries. While it shares some DNA with precision platformers, it introduces a movement system that demands both patience and adaptability. Teleportation, momentum-based traversal, and mouse-assisted actions combine to create a control scheme that initially feels foreign. However, once players become familiar with its quirks, the game opens up in interesting ways. Levels are designed to reward experimentation, often allowing multiple methods of overcoming obstacles. The experience becomes less about simply reaching the end of a stage and more about understanding the logic behind its magical mechanics. One of the title's strongest qualities is its refusal to compromise its identity. Chowderchu is unapologetically niche, proudly carrying the slogan that it was made by wizards for wizards. Its humor and world-building lean heavily into surrealism, giving the game an almost dreamlike quality. There is a charm in its simplicity, as the narrative avoids overexplaining itself and instead lets the environments and character interactions do the heavy lifting. Baz the Wise serves as an entertaining companion throughout the adventure, adding personality to a world that feels intentionally mysterious and delightfully odd. The challenge level is another major component of the experience. Chowderchu is not interested in holding the player's hand, and many sections require repeated attempts before success. Precision, timing, and a willingness to learn from failure are essential. This demanding design philosophy can be both a blessing and a drawback. Players who enjoy overcoming difficult obstacles will likely appreciate the sense of accomplishment that comes with mastering its systems, while those seeking a more relaxed experience may find themselves frustrated. Nevertheless, the game's difficulty rarely feels unfair; instead, it reflects the developer's commitment to creating a title that rewards persistence. From a presentation standpoint, Chowderchu opts for a retro-inspired aesthetic that complements its whimsical premise. The visuals are modest, but they possess enough character to remain memorable. Every environment contributes to the feeling that players are exploring an unusual magical realm, while the soundtrack reinforces the atmosphere with compositions that range from playful to mysterious. Although it lacks the technical polish of larger productions, its artistic consistency helps compensate for its limitations. The result is a game that feels cohesive despite its rough edges. There are certainly aspects that will divide players. The unconventional controls can be difficult to grasp, and the abstract storytelling may leave some wishing for greater narrative depth. Likewise, its specialized appeal means it is unlikely to resonate with a broad audience. Yet these elements are also what make Chowderchu stand out in an increasingly crowded indie landscape. It is a passion project through and through, prioritizing originality over widespread accessibility. In the end, Chowderchu succeeds because it never attempts to imitate other games. It offers a memorable blend of challenging platforming, imaginative world design, and quirky charm that few titles can replicate. While it may not become an instant favorite for everyone, those willing to embrace its peculiarities will discover a genuinely distinctive experience. Ryan Jensen's creation is a reminder that independent games can still surprise players by taking risks and fully committing to unconventional ideas. Rating: 6/10
Not the worst thing I've ever seen... but it's still bad.
Cool!
