This game is a really fun experience, it perfectly encapsulates the feel of an early trading card game like Yu-Gi-Oh but in digital form! The primary game play experience is making your own deck from packs earned from fighting people, slowly putting together your own deck with a pretty simple battle formula ~ spells and monsters, some monsters have some basic abilities, but everything is really easy to wrap your head around. The further you get into the story the more you can modify and experiment with your deck in different ways, and despite it being simple a lot of cards interact in interesting ways in actual combat and there's a handful of built-in synergies in the cards. Deck building has a nice in between when it comes to limits, you need a minimum of 30 cards, but can go to a maximum of 90, though no npc you'll fight in the game goes beyond the minimum deck limit so there's no reason to, but from a casual perspective it's nice to not be so restricted, especially when your cards are limited. Of course you lose consistency as you stray way from the minimum anyway. The most unique aspect of this battle system is that to get energy (which you use to play cards) you need to discard cards from your hand, which really helps make combat progress more smoothly and is a huge help in early game if you end up with bricks in your hand! It perfectly fits the dynamic deck-building system and the cards you play with, though the only downside is that cards that draw cards or can summon specific cards from your deck have a massive advantage in play. Aside from this mechanic it plays atypically, you get energy, you use that energy to play cards, and the win condition is to get your opponent's life points to 0. This system does occasionally change in a couple minor ways as you enter various boss fights/new areas with field effects. These field effects mark certain play spots on the field (or sometimes all of them) and activates a certain effect when a monster occupies that space. For example it could be something simple like that monster gets +100 Health or Attack, other times it can be a lot more game changing with players losing/gaining life, drawing or discarding cards, etc. so it can spice up the game quite a bit at times. Unfortunately, depending on the type of deck you're running you can often ignore these changes entirely with little consequence. Which brings me to my last point in terms of actual card gameplay; difficulty, this game isn't very difficult. If I had to give it a rating I'd say it's probably Medium or Easy-Medium. Early game is definitely on the harder side only due to the lack of options you have in deck building, but once you have options if you're familiar with card games and deck building you'll be able to put something together that's consistent and strong, and this only becomes more true as you progress through the game. After I beat the first "Gym Leader" (Pin Challenger, whatever) I barely modified my deck only occasionally swapping out a card or two or adding a valuable card into it and sweeped the rest of the game. Don't get me wrong each of these boss fights have unique mechanics that they warn you about preemptively so you can adequately modify your deck but if you make a strong enough deck, then it won't matter what the mechanic is. All and all, the actual gameplay is a lot of fun, it never gets boring and I'm sure if you play different decks you do have to switch them up for each boss fight. and there's no punishment for experimenting with different decks either. Since this review has become kind of lengthy I'll summarize the rest of the Pros and Cons I have with Cardaire: Pros: -Fun Gameplay that plays beautifully into experimenting with new decks -Fun Deckbuilding Simulator -Art Style of the cards creates a great atmosphere -Unique mechanics for each area and boss -Fun Post-Game Content Cons: -Difficulty is low -Unique mechanics can often be ignored -The gameplay system can be clunky at first before you get used to it -Music gets old quickly and isn't always the best Overall Experience: 8/10

I got all achievement in this game and I enjoyed it a lot. As someone who loves MTG, YuGiOh FM, and old YuGiOh DS games this game was awesome. The resource system is very similar to Lorcana from what I know about it, but it is great and a really fun game. Figuring out a good strategy and pulling a new card I could put into my deck felt great. Even after finishing the story, hunting for all cards and card backs was also a cool challenge in of itself, and rental deck tournaments and Grappler Format offer even more unique challenges if you want them. The game has a few issues. I got it on sale for 2€, the playtime is so short that I honestly would not get it for 10€. The fishing mechanic is really boring, and to 100% the game you need to spend a solid 30 minutes essentially being Afk with it. And the game is also really easy, with most opponents feeling like their decks are tossed together from random cards and the AI literally handing me games sometimes. The gameplay feels a bit slow, but that is mainly a result of the turn structure, which was also a strategic part of the game I really enjoyed. Despite these issues this was overall a really enjoyable experience. I had a ton of fun with this game, and found myself wishing for more (and lucky me, a sequal is coming out this year). I really wish there were more of these kinds of deckbuilding rpgs. Great game.
And awkward gem that felt similar to the games of old. Don't get me wrong as this game is slightly flawed and has it's issues... but in an old sort of fun way for old games. The card game is simple if fun and the AI has it's issues which can be part of the fun and frustration. Basic gameplay. You get a hand of 5 and you can discard one card at the start of your turn to get 1 energy which stays with you throughout the entire match. So tossing some cards into the trash is needed to get that needed energy for bigger and better cards. The next step is playing cards. One spell zone since it's all magic cards and 5 monster zones. Remember the shield icon as that spot needs a monster on it to prevent direct damage at your LP. Even a trash guard can run as a speed bump to buy you more time to get a better card or field. The flame icon is the region field effect which tends to change in the regions within the game... something to pay attention to. After that it is the basic play cards till you deck out, run out of LP, or your opponent ran out of cards or LP. Outside of cards you can do the usual stuff like talking to people, seeing the story, and of course getting a fishing rod to fish for the digital currency needed to buy packs... and better fishing rod also gets you an early draw card. After that it is a basic progression track with you facing people, winning duels, grinding for more digital card points to earn more cards and trying to rip open packs to get that ONE CARD you are looking for to complete a collection or get the extra cards needed to complete your deck concept... until the next pack comes out with slightly better cards to make you remake your entire deck concept plan again. Not the best game ever, but a fun odd gem that is worth the price. (and of course worse to come worse if you face an issue... find a spot in the water and start fishing for card points. Even the old man who gives you the fishing rod is surprised if you ask for an explanation on how it works.)
A compelling and very competent variation of the CCG genre. For comparison, it's the closest to EARLY Hearthstone, as in, before the meta got ridiculous. This one also has a generous splash of both Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon CCG. I feared it would be mediocre, but it's actually a ton of fun. At worst, it can feel slightly grindy at times, but other than few minor roadblocks, I'm not sure whether I enjoyed exploring the map more, or slinging cards, because both are really fun. Please, please, please! Let this game thrive and get an update! I want it to succeed so bad! This is the sh*t! And the story is fun! Like, imagine the first arc of Yu-Gi-Oh!, the Duelist Kingdom, but if it was actually attempted irl. The organisational errors, the miscommunication, the hardware breaking... All the shabang, which actualy makes the game feel all the more organic and naturally funny. And all the characters are likeable! Except Raine. Also, Stellar rules, Spell Burn drools. Also also! YOU CAN PET THE DOGGO!!!
The Short Version: If you like the beatdown-heavy style of the old Yu-Gi-Oh games (we talking Forbidden Memories, here!), but wanted to add a few dashes of Pokemon's exploration mechanics and a delightfully charming soundtrack to boot--Try Cardaire. The Long Version: As someone who played a lot of YGO: Forbidden Memories for the PS1 and way more YGO: Spirit Caller, World Championship 2008, and so on, Cardaire's "card game" leans heavily towards the early days of YGO, where "my guy is bigger than your guy" is kind of the norm. While that sounds simple, there's enough complexity within these 100+ cards to mix things up a bit. You could go wide with the Stellar definitely-not-Sentai cast, or you could amp up a two-or-three armed swordsman to new heights. You could run plenty of removal cards while focusing on getting hits in, or you could play really tanky cards to protect yourself while you build up a board. With only a bit over 100 cards, you aren't going to get *much* variety, but you can save yourself some repetition by only focusing on the main fights while you.... Explore! This was one of the more charming aspects, as I wasn't expecting it to have Pokemon-inspired exploration (complete with "hidden moves" to unlock new areas). The environments are delightful to see, the visual/audio gags help keep the game's lighthearted tone, and the overarching story has a good bit of heart to it. While some of the game's secrets are a bit obtusely hidden, the community (and the dev!) has either already compiled some of the bigger secrets or is quick to answer any questions. As a game that takes less than 10 hours to see/do everything, as a largely solo project, and as an homage to the days where your best deck was cobbled together from a handful of booster packs and hand-me-downs, Cardaire is fantastic example of what many Card-Game-Video-Games aspire to be.
this game is great so far! really fun, and totally worth the price :)
100%'d the game. There's some good, some bad. But it's a fairly solid game. I like the card game itself, seems fun with a lot of decks working for most opponents bar the secret one. The AI is my main issue. I've had moments where I flubbed and the AI has had lethal on board only to, instead of attacking me directly, would kill his monsters into one of mine which just sets me up to win off of that. Not very fun to get a win because the AI doesn't know what it's doing. The battler itself is a little janky. It's hard to tell what phase you're on if you didn't pay attention to what popped up. Got mad when I was battling the secret boss and lost my chance at a win because I discarded, couldn't remember if I discarded, and hit next to go to the slot in phase- but instead went into attack so i couldn't play the spell I needed to win the battle. My fault, yea, but could've been avoided if there was a more apparent way to check what phase you're in. Card art? Peak. No notes really, it's all great and I'm glad it's not AI slop. Favorite soul? Toad Wizard. Favorite spell? Burn With Me. Farming for Card Shards kinda sucks. I ended up increasing the speed of the game to just blast through fishing (the ten lump quest was a lil rough) then got the rest through dueling. Would've been nice to have multiple deck options, but I believe the new game is going to have that so moot point there. Genuinely looking forward to the next game if it expands upon the groundwork here.
Pretty cool so far. I wish I bought this on Itch (didn't know before the 2 hour mark), and it would benefit by having the option of multiple deck builds, instead of having to scrap your entire deck just to see if some other build works for you.
