Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a fast-paced, over-the-top soccer game that blends arcade-style action with anime spectacle, offering a distinct experience that sets it apart from traditional football simulations. Developed by Tamsoft and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the game is based on the long-running Captain Tsubasa manga and anime franchise, which is known for its larger-than-life characters, dramatic storytelling, and gravity-defying moves. Rather than aiming for realism like the FIFA or PES series, Rise of New Champions goes all-in on its anime roots, creating a unique hybrid of sports action and narrative-driven gameplay that will appeal strongly to fans of the source material and anyone looking for a different take on the beautiful game. The gameplay in Rise of New Champions is built around stylized, exaggerated soccer mechanics. Players control teams of young athletes who can perform special shots, dashes, and tackles that resemble something closer to fighting games than traditional football sims. Dribbling past opponents with flashy animations, unleashing powerful “Spirit Shots” that send the ball flying like a meteor, or triggering cinematic goalkeeper saves that could belong in a shonen battle scene are all part of the experience. There’s a stamina system that governs each character’s ability to sprint, tackle, and shoot, adding a layer of resource management to the chaos. Each player on the field feels distinct, with individual strengths, weaknesses, and special techniques, many of which are lifted directly from the anime with lovingly faithful animations. One of the game’s biggest draws is its robust story content, split into two main single-player modes: Episode: Tsubasa and Episode: New Hero. The first follows the core storyline of Tsubasa Ozora, the franchise's iconic protagonist, as he competes in the National Middle School Tournament. It’s a retelling of a familiar arc for long-time fans, complete with key moments and rivalries adapted into gameplay. The second mode, Episode: New Hero, offers a more customizable experience, allowing players to create their own original character and choose from one of three schools to lead to victory. This RPG-lite mode includes stat-building, bonding with teammates, and branching storylines, giving it surprising depth and encouraging multiple playthroughs. The writing leans heavily into melodrama, passion, and youthful ambition, making it feel like a fully interactive sports anime. The presentation is one of the game’s strongest points. The anime art style is vibrant and consistent, with sharp cel-shading and bold character designs that capture the spirit of the original series. The animations for special moves are especially noteworthy, turning otherwise standard gameplay moments into dramatic highlight reels that are fun to watch every time. Stadiums are colorful, the UI is stylized yet functional, and the overall visual tone strikes a great balance between cartoonish energy and competitive tension. Voice acting is available in Japanese, with English subtitles, which preserves the authenticity of the characters and tone. The soundtrack, while not particularly groundbreaking, complements the gameplay well with high-energy tracks that fit the action-heavy style. Despite its strengths, Rise of New Champions does have some notable shortcomings. The core gameplay, while exciting and flashy, can become repetitive over time. Matches often devolve into predictable patterns—dash, pass, build up spirit, unleash special shot, repeat—which can start to feel monotonous in longer sessions. AI behavior is also a mixed bag; sometimes opponents are laughably passive, while other times they become overly aggressive or exploit game mechanics in frustrating ways. The physics and collision detection can be inconsistent, occasionally resulting in awkward animations or missed opportunities that feel unfair. These issues don’t ruin the experience, but they can break immersion and make competitive matches less satisfying than they should be. Online multiplayer offers both casual and ranked play, allowing players to test their skills against others worldwide. However, this mode suffers from several technical limitations, including input lag, matchmaking issues, and a lack of features compared to more established online sports titles. Connectivity can be unreliable, and the player base, while dedicated, is relatively small, leading to long wait times or repeated matchups against the same opponents. There are customization options for teams and characters, but the lack of post-launch content updates and limited variety in modes can hinder the game's long-term appeal for competitive players. That said, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions shines brightest when embraced for what it truly is: a love letter to the Captain Tsubasa franchise and a celebration of anime-style sports drama. It doesn’t try to be a realistic simulation of football—instead, it doubles down on style, emotion, and spectacle. For fans of the series, it’s a dream come true to take control of iconic characters like Hyuga, Misaki, Wakabayashi, and Tsubasa himself, pulling off their signature moves in beautifully animated glory. For newcomers, it offers a refreshing twist on the sports genre, trading realism for a bold, kinetic, and highly stylized form of gameplay that emphasizes fun over fidelity. In conclusion, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions delivers a distinct, anime-infused soccer experience that offers plenty of excitement and character-driven storytelling. While it falters in depth, balance, and online polish, it excels in capturing the essence of what makes Captain Tsubasa beloved by fans worldwide. It’s not the kind of game to satisfy hardcore simulation players, but for those who want their sports games to be thrilling, character-rich, and full of cinematic flair, it’s an easy recommendation. The game’s heart lies not in perfect mechanics, but in its unwavering dedication to youthful dreams, rivalry, and the sheer joy of the game. Rating: 7/10

14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 22: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,515 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
