You know you have a real gem on your hands when the title of the game program is Unreal Development Kit. This asset flipped trash is little more than a walking simulator masquerading as a horror game. There are a total of two "jump scares" in this miserably dull experience. That's surprisingly few for another click-bait slender clone attempting to capitalize off trend chasing content creators with a webcam and microphone to scream into. Maybe using Youtuber reactions as your game trailer on Steam is a little too on the nose, huh? The environments are ugly with the same few assets lazily strewn about a maze of concrete hallways. Interactive items like keys and batteries barely stand out due to the poor lighting and texture quality. There is no startup screen and thus no options to adjust such as sound or resolution. Game mechanics are entirely broken and unpolished. Attempting to skip over the cringe-inducing voice acting in the beginning usually crashes the game. The flashlight's batteries will continue to drain even when turned off. The only positive about this embarrassing mess is the short play time of 12-20 minutes. Definitely do not recommend.
RECENZJA RETROSPEKCYJNA

BlackShadows has little to contribute to the horror genre as an indie. Its hard to find anything to showcase that it has any promise. Here are my thoughts on my playthrough of the game. So the first part is the explanation of the story which is unfulfilling as upon starting the game you are greeted with a black screen and listening to a women explaining the premise of the game. I think that the game would have done itself better justice of continuing a storyline if there had been notes to find to further expand but I find that this game did itself the bare minimum. Secondly, the environment is repetitive, providing you with a flashlight that has little to no battery life, trying to pull on the Outlast vibe but fails at this since its battery will still drain even when you don't have it on. The minute that the flashlight runs out of battery it is a game-over to try and give you tension but comes off more as irritating. The horror factor comes in only a subpar jumpscare and a women screaming in the background so can't say it has any creep factor to it. And lastly, the pricing of this game I find to be absurd for what is presented to you. At this current time it is priced at £1.99 which I think is ridiculous. It is a functioning game but I think that it should be at least halved in price. One final detail I did notice is that the developer was not invested in this game as when the program loads up it doesn't even use the title of the game but instead "Unreal Development Kit". If you're going to have at least some pride in your game then you would make sure that it had the title but instead it comes across that you made it to maybe get some pocket money here and there and weren't invested as a game developer to make something to be proud of. So don't waste your time picking up this game unless you're wanting to play a really bad game and blow some money on a game that needs to be re-structured immensely to make it into a decent horror game.
If I could give this a sideways thumb I could because I actually was somewhat enjoying this but it's just too janky and broken to recommend. Essentially you're stuck in a labyrinth trying to get to the end, you have to keep picking up batteries for your flashlight or you die and it almost feels a bit like pac-man. The basic setup is a bit like Nightmare on Elm Street in that everyone is supposedly having the same nightmare and you've somehow got to avoid this creature that people are dreaming about. The problem however, is this game is busted. Like yeah, it functions in the sense that you can play it, but that's the bare minimum this game hits. There is no menu and you can't set settings. The engine seems to be set to lowest settings by default too, no ansiotropic filtering, texture resolution is super blurry, render resolution is maybe 720p if that much. I hit the escape key to try and change the resolution but that actually closed the game and the game starts off with a long monologue of about 2 minutes or so that you can't skip so I had to go through the whole thing again. I tried opening steam overlay to browse the internet a bit while slogging through it a second time, but doing that broke being ale to use the space bar to start the game, so I had to close out and open the game again and listen to the monologue a third time just to play. Once you're finally in the game, you're treated to something unpolished, but kind of interesting until you realize how broken it is. The environment is actually kind of cool in the sense that it's sort of this strange liminal space. It looks like a laboratory or a bunker but only in the barest sense and tables and equipment are there but not in any way that would make sense for a real environment, and that actually works really well towards the game's goal since I think you're supposed to be playing through a dream. There are a couple jumpscares here and there and I actually was getting startled by them. If this had simply been a creepy walking simulator, that would have been enough and I'd gladly give this a thumbs up, unfortunately though, if you run out of battery for your flashlight you have to restart the entire game from the beginning. If there were checkpoints I wouldn't have minded being set back a bit but I just didn't feel like replaying the whole thing from scratch, and that's a shame because there is something here even if it's very basic. There's also an incredibly annoying footsteps sounds that I didn't really want to keep listening to.
Ich liebe das LED-RGB Benzin. Auch die Energiespaarlampen + waren sehr ansprechend. #Umweltschutz
Even the lowest of low effort games usually have a main menu... however this sad excuse for a game opens up with a voiceover drowned out by piano music, then throws you right into its "gameplay". You slowly walk around corridors that all look the same, collecting a couple keys and opening doors. There's no option for fullscreen, however alt+enter does work and stretches the game to your monitor size. If you press ESC expecting an options menu, you're in for the game's best jump scare - it just closes immediately. The whole thing lasts about 10-15 minutes and absolutely nothing noteworthy happens during that time. I've played a lot of low budget/effort horror games and this just may be the most depressingly crappy one. It should not be sold for money, let alone have ever seen the light of day.
