Replaying Beneath a Steel Sky almost 30 years after I first played it was a bit like opening a time capsule and discovering that most of the contents still work. Sure, it's impossible to judge a 1994 adventure game by modern standards, but what surprised me most is how well the story holds up. For a game that's over three decades old, the writing, world-building, and characters remain sufficently engaging. The gameplay naturally shows its age, but that's part of the charm. More importantly, if you're planning to play Beyond a Steel Sky, I'd strongly recommend starting here. The sequel benefits enormously from knowing the original story, characters, and setting, and several moments simply land better if you've taken the journey from the beginning. A classic that has aged far better than many games half its age.

This is a "classic" point-and-click, which means for all of its good points there's just as much bullsh*t spoiling it. In the end, whilst I did get some enjoyment out of the game, I can't recommend it because of some tedious irritations that were only mitigated by looking up a guide. Otherwise I wouldn't have finished it. Story-wise it's starts off as if it's going to be a serious sci-fi drama thriller, but quickly throws that aside in favour of being very silly in tone. Then at the end it veers back into seriousness for a finale that it spent the preceding hours utterly puncturing with ridiculous humour. Now, it is pretty funny and if it had just stuck to that then I would have less issue with it. On the other hand though: Pick a lane. If you want to make a serious piece of drama, then be serious. If you're going for a comedy, then be a comedy. This is like taking the first ten minutes of Blade Runner, then merging it rather awkwardly with 80 minutes of slapstick and the absurdity of Ideocracy, before pivoting back to the "lost like tears in the rain" speech and expecting it to have the same emotional impact. If you don't give a damn about this dissonant tone then tuck in. As I said: It is hilarious (deliberately so) in places. It's just that for my tastes other than it being a so-so way of passing a few hours it was ultimately pointless having any investment in the narrative. Given that is half of a games appeal, it's a big failing in my book. The final issue is a number of "puzzles" that are either (a) poorly signposted, or (b) hard to spot items, or (c) contradictory in their nature, or (d) result in instant death. You know, "classic" point-and-click design at its "finest". All of the irritating things that they used to incorporate seemingly as a big "f**k you" to the player back in the day, There are several places in the game where it's not obvious that you can die. Even though there are auto-saves, that's no help if it decides to kick in when you're stuck in an event that's going to kill you. Which is exactly what happened towards the end of the game after 9 or so hours of playing it. Luckily I'd manually saved not too long before this happened, otherwise I'd have had to restart the entire thing! Another example was going through some steps to get a couple of items, only to have them instantly taken away by an NPC. After wasting X amount of time trying to get them back on the assumption they were needed, it turns out they were just red-herrings and the only important item was a tiny barely distinguishable couple of pixels that I'd missed. Almost like they'd deliberately made it hard to spot just so that they could pad out an utterly pointless sequence. There's several instances where they do things like this and it gets annoying. These aren't intelligent solutions to problems and some are a case of repetitive trial-and-error to solve. I don't mind timing-based "puzzles" in the genre but don't then compound the "challenge" by having loads of irrelevant objects that further obfuscate what you're supposed to be achieving. I needed to look up a guide at 4 or 5 places in the game and every time it was never a case of "ahh! that's so clever and I'm so dumb". They were all "f**k you, you stupid old-skool point-and-click developers!" moments of illogical b*ll*cks. Here's a door with a lock, so you'd think you'd need a key for it. Because, you know, locks tend to have an item that, uh, locks them and then, uh, unlocks them, and that item is usually, well, a key. So what do you use? A security card because it's a mechanical latch that you flip (even though they don't describe it as such or show you a graphic of it to maybe figure this out) What's behind the door? A pair of garden shears that are described as being too blunt to cut some plants when you try to use them on the "wrong" object, yet they can then cut through a metal grille for the "right" solution.....It's so inconsistent. Modern examples in the genre have done away with this kind of rubbish and are all the better for it, with them getting much closer to being actual thoughtful problems rather than this old-skool "moon-logic" If you just want a laugh, and don't feel that using a guide is a cheat-sheet that excuses poorly designed puzzles, then this is okay. Otherwise: This isn't the best story or the best game-play that the genre has to offer.

Comic book artist Dave Gibbons (most famous for Watchmen) created the art for Beneath a Steel Sky and this fact makes this game a unique point-and-click adventure game from the 90s. The gameplay itself is typical for 90s point-and-click games: Figuring out what you need to do to advance can be very hard and often you have to resort to watching walkthroughs. In the story, comedy is mixed with quite morbid events and themes. I would recommend this game to people who are interested in comics and how their essence can be infused into video games. Beneath a Steel Sky is a pioneer in this sense, although its gameplay can be frustrating at times.
Brilliant storytelling combined with imaginative sci-fi settings in the classic adventure game format. Beneath a Steel Sky is arguably still one of the best games that brings to life the cyberpunk genre. There's a real 80's noir feel to the game as the graphics taps into that late 80's/early 90's industrial and societal cyberpunk imagery. It's hard to believe a game like this was made in a era when CPU clock speeds were under 100 Mhz and the memory requirements for the game was 1 Mb! Just goes to show that great games and great storytelling does not rely on system resources but truly creative thinking.
