About
Start with nothing but an empty stomach and a hopeful heart in Beggar's Life, an idle incremental game where you beg for food and scavenge to survive. As you grow stronger (and stranger), unlock bizarre and surprising paths: become a humble priest, a cunning thief, a devoted rat lover, or even a chaotic pyromaniac. Every scrap you collect leads to new skills and possibilites. Will you rise, or just set everything on fire?
Accumulate all sorts of things: There are many resources to gather, and many ways to gather them. Beg for food, forage for trinkets, pray for forgiveness, imagine them into being. Resources can be concrete like breadcrumbs, alive like cats, or abstract like sadness and gratitude.
Grow stronger, grow kinder, grow happier, grow madder: Use resources to craft power-ups. Weave a basket to carry more food. Sharpen your mind to think faster and endure more guilt. Learn to read and begin studying. Or draw closer to the sewer rats and form a real bond.
Train in a wide variety of skills: Scavenging, Beggarhood, Animal Love, Cunning, Catkinship, Ratkinship, Introspection... and that’s just scratching the surface. Improving skills makes you more versatile, though some may clash. As you grow, new actions and power ups may become available, but not all skills guarantee rewards. Some paths might close off others.
Rise through the classes: In Beggar’s Life, you don’t choose a class at the start. Instead, you unlock them as you go, picking one when you meet the requirements. Classes are multi-tiered and grow in scope. You might start at the bottom of the streets, then serve the church as an Alms Collector. Keep going, and you might become an Acolyte, or even a Priest. Or maybe halfway through your life in the Church, you change paths. Move into the sewers and become a Rat Warden. Or a Pickpocket. Or a Street Philosopher. The choice is yours, if you can earn it.

I found this a decent game to play while reading, and a rather thought-provoking game with its theme of lost philosophy. Growing stronger in this game always involves gaining clarity and becoming a reflective person. I don't think I've ever seen a game with that theme displayed so strongly. As an invisible nobody who struggles for clarity and longs for philosophy, I feel seen.

This is an idle game in much the same way that Kittens Game is an idle game, which is to say that it has idle elements, but requires too much micromanagement to be left along for any real significant amount of time. That said, I still really enjoyed it. There's something humbling about playing a medieval beggar trying there very best to survive the harsh realities of medieval life. Also enjoy the freedom to choose what path you want to walk, the Developer really added a lot of options to this release version. Though I've got a feeling that they're not quite done yet. The prestige system is nice, and shows a lot of promise. All in all it's a decent beggar sim game as is, but it'll only get better as the Developer continues to add more content.
I like the game and the concept, but the game is frankly too slow. not sure if it is just first cycle or what, but as I burned out before reaching that point, it doesn't matter why. The dev time of every skill needs to be 2/3 as long or faster, and that is just the thing that started my burnout.
While the developer writes about the inspiration behind "Beggar's Life", this game feels like a step (or two) back in terms of content, quality of life and interface. Several core design decisions mean that the game plays like a bullet-point list on PC (do you see on the screenshots that there's a dropdown menu with literally every button?). Those decisions also mean the game doesn't respect your time. And for an incremental game, this is a horrible weakness. Most of the time spent is with the right-most menu that has way too many things happening. More than half of my screen is just empty space. UI scale? Pfft. This seems like it would 100% play better on a phone. In fact, the demo I tried months ago on my phone was much better than the full release. At this point, no, I can't recommend spending your time in "Beggar's Life". Maybe if there's a proper redesign of the interface, proper scaling and removal of every redundant button.
Idle & Incremental Lovers recommends Beggar's Life: If you're OK with what you're getting into (an active "idler" with a barebone interface), this is a great game that makes your imagination work! Everything is intertwined: classes, skills, tasks...! + Since the interface is so minimalist, you have to use your imagination to picture your actions and the story you build. If you like to create pictures and stories in your brain, this is fantastic! + So many skills, resources, tasks, locations, power ups... This must have been a brainteaser to create such a big web of intertwined elements! + Freedom, a lot of it, and many different endings! +/- The game is in a weird spot, as it has a lot of idle components, but lasting around 10 to 100 seconds, so you really have to stay focused on the game, but "suffer" the waiting time. It's OK, though, if you're aware of it and don't look for a game to play in the background. - Having absolutely no graphic elements make it hard to remember what interacts with what without checking a lot of things. Maybe implement some small icons representing skills, resources, etc.? - It's hard to get into the logic of the game at first, it being pretty complex. Some kind of tutorial elements would be useful. The game grew on me the more I progressed. *A beggar once asked me, "Any change?" I said, "No. You're still broke."* Found this review helpful? It is nice game, for now I think it's beggining of early access and there is a lot to improve (UI, some mechanics and bugs ~ luckly didn't encounter any game destroying bug just some minor problems with functionality or user friedly things), still I think it's worth a try especially if you like this types of games and let's just hope this game will become something great in future.
I begged so hard I became Socrates. I feel like id be an excellent egirl.
