Bardic: Quest for Love is a visual novel and tavern-sim hybrid set in the fantasy city of Deepharbor. You play as Edmond or Edna, a bard who inherits a struggling tavern, works to bring it back to life, recruits a cast of colorful characters, and potentially finds romance along the way — all while making dialogue choices and participating in a pub management minigame. Pros: ✔️ Variety of characters – There are a solid dozen romanceable folks, each with distinct personalities and backgrounds. ✔️ Voice cast stands out – Most of the characters are voiced with clear, expressive performances that help bring them to life. ✔️ Instrumental compositions are enjoyable – The background music fits the tone well and creates a cozy, medieval tavern mood. Cons: ❌ Voice actors aren’t strong singers – In a game about bards and music, I expected the vocal performances to feel more polished for a singing-heavy theme. ❌ Some animations feel jarring – A few character movements and transitions felt stiff or out of sync with the tone. ❌ Music feels dated — Some tracks remind me of MIDI-esque quality. For a game themed around songs and performance, it missed an opportunity for richer instrumentation. Conclusion The game clearly came from a place of love and imagination — and that’s what stuck with me, more than anything else. I didn’t feel fully immersed, but I respected the effort. There were moments where dialogue made me smile, and the tavern bits added a surprising layer of strategy. Ultimately, though, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was so close to something great, if only the experience and toolset was there to back it. It’s like watching someone bake an elaborate cake with the first time with only from a box experience, you appreciate the effort but at the end it ends up being nothing like the picture. Score: 6/10 Tavern Calls - A heartfelt first attempt that hits some high notes — but leaves you craving a richer melody.
