YiYi, developed and published by the indie creator Mai Yue Shan Ku, is a short narrative-driven experience that leans more toward interactive poetry than traditional gameplay. At its heart, the game is a meditation on longing, memory, and the passage of time. You play as a character named Gui, who wanders through a mysterious city cloaked in eternal night in search of YiYi, a presence that seems tied to memory and emotional resonance more than tangible form. Rather than telling a conventional story with clear beginnings and endings, the game focuses on evoking feelings, inviting the player to interpret its meaning in a personal way. The game’s greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. Its art style is minimalist and painterly, presenting moody backdrops and subdued tones that emphasize the dreamlike quality of Gui’s journey. Instead of highly detailed animation or complex visuals, it relies on simple imagery to create an intimate setting. This restraint works to the game’s advantage, as the lack of spectacle allows the player to concentrate on the emotions conveyed through text and imagery. The writing, while sparse, is deeply poetic, creating an experience that feels closer to reading a lyrical short story than playing a conventional visual novel. Music and sound design also play a vital role in how YiYi delivers its impact. The soundtrack is gentle, often subdued, using soft piano melodies and ambient sounds to frame the emotional tone of each scene. This combination of quiet visuals and equally delicate audio underscores the feelings of nostalgia and melancholy that the narrative is designed to elicit. It is not a game that pushes for excitement or adrenaline but one that asks you to slow down and listen carefully to its quiet emotional rhythm. Interactivity in YiYi is limited but intentional. The gameplay mostly consists of advancing text, exploring fragments of memory, and experiencing the story in a linear fashion. There are no branching choices, puzzles, or alternative paths. This may disappoint players who expect more involvement or replayability, but the simplicity is consistent with the game’s artistic vision. It is designed to be brief and focused, delivering its message within about half an hour of playtime. This short runtime is both a limitation and a strength: while some players may wish the journey lasted longer, its brevity prevents the experience from feeling diluted or repetitive. The reception has been generally warm, with players praising its sincerity and ability to provoke genuine emotion despite its modest production. Some point out its imperfections, such as rough transitions or simple presentation, but most agree that these flaws are outweighed by the emotional weight the game manages to carry. Many describe YiYi as a fleeting yet memorable moment, one that lingers after the screen fades, much like a vivid memory revisited. YiYi is not a game for everyone, and it does not attempt to be. It is not about mechanics, branching narratives, or deep replay value. Instead, it is an artistic vignette designed to evoke introspection and feeling within a short span of time. For players who appreciate small, reflective experiences that lean on atmosphere and emotion, it offers a touching and worthwhile story. For those seeking longer gameplay, complex systems, or more traditional storytelling, it may feel insubstantial. Yet, judged by what it sets out to achieve—a quiet exploration of memory and loss—it succeeds gracefully, leaving behind an impression that lasts longer than its brief runtime. Rating: 9/10
