About
"Yaoling: Mythical Journey" takes place on the mysterious Land of the Ancients, where unique environments gave birth to different types of Yaolings. With the combined efforts of the Divine Jade Tree and Yaoling Keepers, Yaolings have become inseparable friends and companions to humans. However, a dark power brews behind the seemingly harmonious veil, stirring up unease among the Yaolings…
The Land of the Ancients is home to over 300 types of fantastical Yaolings of unique species, characteristics, and abilities. Every Yaoling is unique due to their combination of stats and talents. As they gain combat experience, Yaolings can evolve into more powerful forms, many of which might bring you unexpected surprises!
No Yaolings are weak in the hands of an adept Yaoling Keeper! On your journey to become an outstanding Yaoling Keeper, you must learn the abilities and talents of different Yaolings, be flexible in creating strong lineups, and devise strategies against different opponents and situations.
In rare circumstances, you may encounter Yaolings with unusual colors, shiny appearances, or larger sizes during your journey. Rumor has it that some Yaolings may even possess all these traits simultaneously! These unique features will be retained through level-ups and evolution. One would wonder what other surprises await Yaoling Keepers on this mythical journey?
Rescue companions in times of crisis and invite them to help build up your village. They will unlock useful buildings such as restaurants, training grounds, breeding dens, and more! In addition to their excellence in combat, some Yaolings make great helpers for farming, mining, cooking, and crafting.
For unknown reasons, Yaolings are becoming restless and transforming into demons, with some even becoming unique demon lords. Defeating these demon lords will help them regain their consciousness, turning them back into their innocent baby forms to fight alongside you.
As a destined Yaoling Keeper, you will venture through the beautiful land alongside your Yaolings, procuring hidden treasures, challenging Schools of Yaoling Keepers, and face off against powerful Demon Lords. You can catch and document Yaolings you encounter, explore different line-ups during battles, or simply fish along the waterbanks. Your journey is for you to unfold!
Knowing the right time and place to use charms is an essential skill for a Yaoling Keeper. Spells casted through charms can both provide buffs and healing for allies, while damaging and crippling enemies. Some are even used to forge bonds with Yaolings. Casting charms outside of battle may bring about many surprises!

I have a lot to say about this one. I wasn't sure if creature collector autobattler would be enjoyable, but it really was There are so many cool monsters and the gameplay loop doesnt't get boring for a while I can't give a thumbs down, cause it really was just a fun ride That being said, here's my issues with the game; It feels like they got very lazy, we go from "every mon has 3 stage evo plus a demon form" to "mon evolves only once...at LEVEL 90 plus demon" to "never evos, no demon form, no nothing" and the world is SO EMPTY like, halfway thru the game they were like "okay, no more villages, vendors or side quests lol" I feel like if they had put more into this game than the ridiculous bloat, it'd be a 10/10 for me speaking of bloat, we may have an empty world, but do you know what we do have? a super customizable island with no real incentive to use and two seperate game modes On a fun side note, the area we only see for 5 min in last act seems more alive than most of the actual game Also, for all completionists; these devs hate you with a passion You want 100% dex? well....how about we lock one mon behind beating the entire seperate gamemode with way different gameplay? Oh and also, what if we put a lv1 mon into a lv90-100 area...and then it evolves at 98 wouldnt that be HILARIOUS? Also, dont worry about doing the 30 min check ins in your village, you will be swimming in resources in no time Also also, the writing/story is kinda bad and boring

Overall Game Rating: 7.5/10 A very beautifully designed game with a very strong, distinct art direction and a very calming atmosphere to it.

Gameplay: 7/10 It doesn't do anything particularly innovative with the autobattling system, but it delivers on a sense of customization through your companions (the yaolings). You can intervene through spells that can feel...mixed on how effective they actually are. Most of your labor is done prior to the fight. The game has two distinct game modes: one that plays like a standard creature-collection world exploration where you find and catch your yaolings and challenge powerful bosses, and then one that plays with the same battle format but is more comparable to a roguelite. Both are very good, and feels a bit like you got two games in one. One note to those going in, though, the game will introduce the tool for you to breed and minmax your yaolings about halfway through. Do not fall into the trap of trying to minmax. The breeding mechanic operates in real time and you will suck the fun out of your experience waiting around for eggs.

Art Direction: 10/10 Definitely the strongest aspect of the game. I initially thought that the game was simply visually beautiful. It has a vibrant, paper-craft type art style that feels like you're looking at a pop-up book at all times. The designs of the yaolings are also absolutely phenomenal. One of the most consistently well-designed sets of creatures I've ever seen in a creature collector game. Something I didn't get until I played it, though, was the environment design and music in the main campaign combining to create a really soothing ambiance. Combined with this being an autobattler, most of the game was a very relaxing experience.

Story: 5/10 The story is nothing to write home about. Big evil resurges and drives creatures mad, it's up to you to gather your forces and stomp it out. It's a story clearly designed to carry you through the gameplay, not one trying to move you.

Difficulty:5/10 The game has different difficulties at different points and contexts. The scaling of difficulty through the actual main campaign is really good, with the early game feeling easy and the late game feeling a good bit tougher. At a certain point, you gain access to a means to modify the difficulty for greater rewards. As for the Hearth Siege (roguelite) mode, it's a little more rooted in RNG and requires a lot more adaptive thinking. Generally a bit more difficult, and can get very difficult when you're trying to complete challenges.

Completionist Friendliness: 9/10 The game has two distinct sets of achievements: One set for the main campaign and one set for Hearth Siege mode. The ones for the campaign broadly are simply acquired by playing through the story, and fairly easy. The ones for Hearth Siege are generally more grind-y and difficult, requiring you to complete all of some of the game's most challenging tasks. They're difficult and can feel left to some RNG, but not infuriatingly so. None of the achievements are missable. I deduct a point only because Hearth Siege does feel like an entirely separate game mode, so if you got the game for what was advertised, and found yourself not a fan of Hearth Siege, then achievement hunting is gonna be terrible. Bonus Features: Mounts go brr
This is easily the second-best Pokémon-style game on Steam! At first, I honestly thought the price was a little steep. But after actually playing it, I can confidently say it’s worth every penny. The monster-catching and progression systems in Yaoling: Mythical Journey are seriously well done. There are all kinds of Yaolings to discover, and there’s way more to do than just wander around catching them. You can build and expand your own territory, gather resources, breed and hatch new creatures, and… yeah, there’s a LOT going on. I started playing in the morning and somehow it was nighttime before I even realized how much time had passed. The more I played, the more nostalgic I got. When I was a kid, I used to sit in front of the TV every day watching Pokémon, following Ash on all his adventures and imagining myself going on those adventures too. Years later, I finally grew up, got my own Nintendo console, and was incredibly excited to play the actual Pokémon games. And honestly… they were pretty disappointing. I never expected that, years later, I’d end up finding that feeling again in a game on Steam. Yaoling may not have the jaw-dropping 3D visuals of some bigger games, but its art style has a charm of its own. You can tell the developers really understand what makes a good monster-collecting game fun. Playing this brought back that simple, pure excitement I used to feel watching Pokémon as a kid. Anyway, enough talking. My village needs me. Back to the grind. Absolute gem. If you’re into monster collecting, just buy it. You won’t regret it.
