This game/"documentary" confirms the image that THE refugee... does NOT belong to a word / group, but are individual individuals, one by one, who do not know each other beforehand. ALL with a sad story for deciding to flee! We—rich (Western) Europe—do not know what that is. Just imagine how YOU, (yes YOU), leave on foot, by boat, by car to the other side of the world—without a passport and with too little of everything to escape your current HORROR. This game helps me/you gain more INSIGHT into that...

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

We, the Refugees: Ticket to Europe is a visual novel that has you take role of Polish journalist who comes to Egypt to write a book about refugees seeking way to Europe, by joining group of them being smuggled. It has a rich narrative of branching paths, that will test you based on your decisions, often commenting on the way you play your character (I chuckled a bit when the game reacted to a choice of summarizing the way refugees are being transported as "antiintimacy" by labeling the protagonist as "intellectual masturbator"), and is not afraid of just killing you if you make bad choices. Admittingly, I do not find most appeal in the close to life genre with no speculative or supernatural elements (if I want that I can read or listen about things that did actually happen, which have far more actual humanity), and I found the prospect of playing a white guy merely reporting on lives of refugees far less relatable than if I was allowed to see the world through the perspective of a real refugee. It feels both lazy and condescending. As if the decision was made to focus on a white guy either because his perspective was easier to write or the creators were afraid white gamers are too stupid to put themselves in shoes of actual refugees. The protagonist comes off as incredibly tone-deaf at best and cynically self-serving at worst, putting people's lifes at risk to boost his own ego, then feeling sorry for himself later. I understand that this choice was made out of creator's humbling experience trying to research lives of refugees and realized he will enver understand them, merely can talk about them. But I feel in such case much better option would be to hire few actual refugees and base the story on their reali experience. More costly, harder to implement and likely troubling to even find someone willing to lend their life to this project? Yes. But it would make for a more honest story. That issue is large enough that it became my big gripe with the game and ended undermining the message and the game itself.
Picked this up for just $1.49 at 90% off of its $15 full price in the 2025 Winter sale. So far I completed the beginning fifteen minutes for the second time after having completed the free demo and it's been completely worth picking up the full game. That first fifteen minutes even changed a little bit as this is a choices matter title and I really like that. Definitely recommend playing both the free demo and picking up the full game on sale and will update this review once I invest more time into it. It's a game perfect for picking up and putting down, just as you would a book.
