About

Walkabout is a realistic digital twin of the Cockle Creek region in southern Tasmania, recreated using real‑world data with the goal of recreating a real place as faithfully as possible.
Cockle Creek is the southernmost drivable point in Australia. It is remote and quiet, surrounded by pristine beaches and dense rainforests, with unforgiving weather. It is a beautiful place and a harsh one. That makes it an ideal setting for a realistic survival experience.
The environment is your story.
Good luck staying alive.

Walkabout was built with accuracy to real life in mind. The following features were created using real‑world data and hand‑crafted reconstruction to match the Cockle Creek region as closely as possible:
Actual heightmap data used for the base landscape.
Accurate time and date simulation using the correct time zone and calendar.
Dynamic lighting based on real‑world intensity, exposure, and colour temperature values.
True sun position calculated from global coordinates, date, and time.
Seasonally‑influenced dynamic weather reflecting southern Tasmanian conditions.
Realistic ocean tides simulated using data from the Cockle Creek area.
Accurate Earth rotation represented in the sky system.
Hand‑sculpted rivers matching their real‑world paths.
Roads, walking trails, driveways, and 4WD tracks shaped to match their real‑world locations.
Native flora representing approximately 80% of the vegetation.
Native fauna representing 100% of the wildlife.
Additionally, Walkabout currently features:
Customisable UI colouring.
Full gamepad controller support with customisable keybinds.
Customisable keybinds for mouse and keyboard.
Language support for 15 different languages.

Walkabout takes place in a 7 km × 7 km recreation of a real Australian location. It’s a quiet, atmospheric survival experience where you explore the land, gather what you need, and try to stay alive in a place that doesn’t care whether you make it or not.
The wildlife won’t always warn you, the weather can turn without notice, and shelter becomes essential. You’ll build, craft, forage, and hunt iconic Australian animals when you need to. Survival depends on paying attention to your surroundings.

Wafflesoft is an independent Australian studio, and Walkabout is a solo project. This is my first game, built from the ground up with a focus on accuracy, atmosphere, and long‑term craft.
Maintaining independence allows me the creative freedom to make decisions purely to serve the best interest of Walkabout. Every part of Walkabout exists because it feels right for the experience I’m trying to create.

10 https://youtu.be/X6hiF29Eqm0

1.6.6 microfix update: the developer reinstated the play button, and I was able to review it a bit more fully: https://youtu.be/lDPJH3WD5IU As the developer states the minimum requirements are now only Intel + Nvidia setup - i9 and RTX 4080 minimum - that's a pity. I better upgrade my PC so I can experience this game properly ------ 1.6.6 review: They removed the 'play' button. Just a warning top right corner saying 'does not meet requirements'. I've owned this game since 2019. They keep arbitrarily increasing minimum requirement on store page, and now removed my ability to launch the game from the menu. Scam? I'm not sure. Will see if they do a hotfix but as of 1.6.6, the game is unplayable. Might have to do a 7 year past purchase Steam Refund request if they don't fix this ASAP.
Well i have seen better, this is very very early access, you cant really get far in the game because of the so called rednecks. I joined the discord where i found someone saying that the price had been lowered because they could not put as mny hours into the game as before which rings alarm bells to me. I would hold of there is far better games. 4/10
When I first saw this game on sale, I copped it as a joke as I thought it would be funny. However, Playing this has led me to the conclusion that the game isn't THAT bad. Sure, it's not finished and all, but the idea is there and it's not bad. I feel like if the developer actually worked on the game and adjusted the HUD, the map, the icons, etc etc, the game wouldn't be that bad. Another thing I'd like to see about this game is a story. The store page description tells you that you have to build something, but what if there was a story behind it all, a story behind why the rednecks want to kill you, etc. etc. Honestly though, I've been kind of playing this on and off, and I'm actually enjoying it. If the developer made the map look and feel like the Australian outback and maybe changed the HUD and icons first, as well as some of the animations, I could definitely be encouraged to play this game more. I'm not entirely sure when the last update came out or if the developer has abandoned this game or something, but if you are reading this, work at this game when you can! I know times are tough right now and stuff, so it's not like I expect something massive to come out soon or whatever, but genuinely speaking now, the idea is there and this game won't be bad if it gets worked on!
Outback survival is set in Australia. The setting is not Mad Max, but rather its more of an exploration and survival game. The authentic wildlife brings back what has been lost due to human activities and introduced species.
garbage in my trash is worth more than this game.
In Menu: The music is great and the menu graphics are good! The text could ofcourse be optimized so its more sharp but overall good. In Game: I REALLY enjoy this game, i am actually surprised. I thought that this game would be another bad game made in GameGuru, but this game turns out to be much much more! I really enjoy playing! I love the telltale kinda graphics and i think its a lot of fun. Currently there is exploits and some thing such as damage/loot spawn that needs to be reworked/fixed but this WILL come in the near future. You can choose your outfit and gender in-game which is pretty nice, this is a feature that a lot of survival games are missing, such as The Forest and Rust. Ofcourse as i said earlier i would wish that some things were nerfed/rework but the developer is aware of theese and he is gonna work on them when he fixed bugs and such. This developer has expressed the feeling that all gamers have; do you know this feeling when you buy a game and the game developers does not include things highly wanted by the players? do you know the feeling of buying a game with patches rarely occuring? The developer knows theese and is ready to give us players the service in his game. We will have fixes on a REGULAR basis! And the developer always listens to players suggestions! If you were to support a small yet amazing game developer it should be this one. In my opinion this game is worth the 3$ the map is HUGE and theres many hours of exploring available for you, the player. I did recieve this game for free, but if i had known that it was this good i would certainly have paid for it. And i definately plan to support the developer in the near feature. - AVANE
I really wanted to give this game a higher approval. Sadly on my scale of 1-10 I can only give it a 2 and that was for the effort and the risk of putting something out. The LAG kills this game and where that memory leak is who knows. Even dropping the Graphic quality did not assist in the LAG issues. I am sorry but I really so hope that you are able to fix the problems. I would love to come back to a better game. Good luck I wish to you from the bottom of my Gaming heart.
