I wasn't sure what genre this game was, but I got a good deal on it, so I gave it a try. Here's my experience with it so far: I discovered it's an immersive sim with roguelike elements. After 31 hours, I still haven't beaten it partly due to restarting for some unknown reason. But, when I restarted I was armed with knowledge. Knowledge is the game's stock and trade. Example: enemies like zecs who float around with impenetrable shields are tough customers. But I used a gun that shoots radioactive spikes, which causes radioactive clouds to form where the spikes land, which get behind the shield, and managed in that way to neutralize them. The game also allows tactics like locking doors to cut off pursuers, adding strategic depth. Each randomly generated ship presents different challenges and resource considerations, making every decision a gamble. There are no guarantees. And the game likes to introduce unexpected obstacles. Sometimes these challenges are telegraphed, but can easily be overlooked amid 1001 other considerations. Example: a seemingly easy ship might be close to a pirate ship on the starmap, leading to an annoying and dangerous post mission confrontation. I think anyone who likes immersive sims will enjoy this game. As for drawbacks, the humor is centered around a corporate Bri'ish dystopia, and that might not resonate with everyone. I think other games have done atmosphere a lot better, and I think this game makes some odd choices with its sound design, but I'd say it nevertheless qualifies as atmospheric.

Hmm. It's a good time but not a long time.
I got this game on sale, at about $10 CAD, and that feels about right for what I got out of it. This is a fantastic first person shooter-Roguelike game; but where many of these sorts of games advertise replaying them over and over, I found it really lacking in that regard. The game play just doesn't have enough variety in order to give it that little extra push. The shooter elements of this game are great, with tons of different weapons, secondary choices, and devices, to fit all kinds of different situations. The number of different ships, and their sizes are great, with their different types of specific rooms, as is the looting and building/upgrading mechanics. I think, for me, where I just couldn't bring myself to give it even a second play through, is the lack of enemy variety. You have plenty of enemies to shoot and explode on each ship in terms of volume, but when it comes to what they are, the number of different enemies, there are not many. The game mainly relies on upgrading these foes as you delve deeper into the nebula. This makes them stronger, faster, and can increase their abilities/give them new ones; but it doesn't feel like it is enough. There are weird Japanese toy vessels, convict ships, hospital stations, military frigates, fuel and administration stations, and so many more ship types. But when it comes to enemies you get Janitors, Juves, Screws, Scribes, and a few others, with security elements. Most of the enemies you fight fit in really well with the whole medical/convict/administration vessels, with Outpatients, Juves/Screws, and Scribes respectively and particularly; but where are the crazy Japanese robot foes? Or melee convict enemies, or zombies doomed to eternally wait in line, or garbage hauler monsters? I feel like there could have been so much more to the enemy variety, and the threat that they could have the player face. As it is, the game is fun. I got about 20 hours out of it, playing normally, and upgrading all my gear, eventually completing the game. But I almost couldn't bring myself to complete it, as I was getting bored, and I do not want to play through it again. I also refuse to pay $6 for a DLC with one more type of enemy (that by all accounts and reviews on it, seem to suck [no pun intended as they are vacuum robots]). If you can get it on sale like I did, and if you really really think you will be able to squeeze some more play time out of this game, then by all means, give it a go. It has great music, wonderful/creepy voice acting, super dark humor, a fantastic art style, and is a blast to blast through your enemies and loot derelict ships. It just doesn't have that, some extra to it, that would bring me back to it again; or have me recommend it at it's current price of $30.
I'm enjoying the game overall. Having a real blast. I do have one particular message for the developers though. Kindly take the space whale event, turn it sideways, and stuff it straight up your butt. Like all the way up there until it hurts nice and good, I'm so pissed I think I'm just done playing. I might just be outright done playing for the week while I find something else to do. My very first prison was doing fantastic, I had completed like a half dozen objectives, I had hundreds of bullets, dozens of toaster juice, staples, mines, kittens, grenades, everything. I had almost twenty each of fuel and food, I had two warp keys. All of this in my first run, completely unbroken. I'd been playing conservatively, and I'd even gone out of my way to hunt down and get the pieces for the heart-starter and then upgraded it, just to be absolutely sure I'd have extra lives because I didn't want to lose this run. Keeping the upgrades is nice and all, but after more than 45 levels with no fatalities even on a medium difficulty I was feeling GREAT about myself and looking forward to picking up the next item. Instead I ran into a space whale and I just died, no save, lost all my ammo and everything. I get that dying is the point, but that was just so stupidly cheap. Without passing Go or collecting $200, please go directly to hell. I still recommend the game, it's great. I'm just absolutely malding over here over how crap that one event was. I event liked the genetic augments I had on that guy...
A nice bite-sized roguelite (emphasis on "lite") with shock-like elements. Everything about it is cool, competent, and "just right" for what it is. Hits the right balance in just about every way, and doesn't overstay its welcome (6hr for me to complete it). Has been on my wishlist for years, popped up on sale, and i was between games, so this neatly fit into a weekend. Pretty easy on the first half, but catches up to you near the end; and newgame+ runs can be decorated with more challenges. The biggest aggravation i had was binding controls; the keys (1-3) are listed wrong (they're listed as 2-4 but actually work with 1-3), and there's no option to bind mouse buttons - leading me to have to create a logitech profile that rebound rmb to a key so that this game could use it. After beating it, I found myself speculating on what more I wanted from it (verticality, less prescriptive unlock tree, more items that have enemy status effects) - but not out of frustration, more out of intrigue. This is a great basis for a game, it's a shame that more isn't being added. Maybe there'll be a sequel (evidently there have been hints that's what they've been working on these last 4 years) that can go further with this design. Either way, even if you don't pick this title up specifically, this studio is one to watch.
STAPLES KILL PEOPLE BE LIKE STAPLES
