Game plays like a very long tutorial. Waste of a cool mechanic.
Not bad, but hard to recommend. It's clever and interesting, but unbelievably easy. The puzzle design barely evolves, and you'll often find yourself solving the exact same puzzle over and over again with only superficial tweaks. The voice acting and writing are quite bad as well. I got it as part of a bundle. I would not recommend purchasing it on its own.
Such an amazing game. Brilliant concept and well executed.
The ending was a bit bittersweet :c
its a cool idea, but oh boy is it boring, most puzzles are just walking around to look at something then taking a picture and looking at that thing. The story is all dialog and not very compelling or well written. The whole being in a simulation part was kind of cool but they did nothing with it.
This is one of the most original games I've played. The main mechanic was absolutely blowing my mind for a good first half of the playthrough. I still don't know how it was possible technologically. Having said that, I don't think that it is the best mechanic to make a whole game out of. It feels like it started as a very cool technological demo that was then turned into a game. And don't get me wrong - it worked out really well. It has the story that ties it together, motivation that makes you want to push through the levels, an adorable art style, and all that stuff. But you could sometimes feel that there were not that many puzzles that could be designed with this mechanic. Especially in the beginning, it sometimes felt like you went through a very simple series of levels that were barely puzzles (more like teaching a mechanic) just to have a new mechanic introduced. And don't get me wrong - all these new mechanics tie together to the main theme, but sometimes I was surprised it was already time for a new one. The first half of the game also has a very indie game issue - lack of clear communication. Sometimes I would spend a bunch of time just trying to find a place where a picture was placed. I could also have issues with figuring out what my goal is - I'd just kind of have to guess where the game wants me to go. The second half of the game is where it shines. With all the mechanics explained, levels start feeling like actual puzzles. You spawn, you see a clear goal of what you need to do, and you can figure it out from there. And some levels can make you stop to think for a little bit as well. Contrary to the first half of the game, which feels slightly like a walking simulator because you don't need to think much about the next steps. And that second half had some very creative moments as well. I really like the whole experience. It's exactly what I miss in AAA games and spots where indie games shine. An idea like this is so unique and not possible to be copied anymore. The transitions from pictures to levels can still wow me sometimes. Amazing job.
An ingenious concept for a puzzler: building and warping and slicing geometry, capturing structures in photos, turning things on their head, rewinding time, rewriting rules. Its just a shame that when the puzzles really start to cook, the game ends. So much more could be done with these brain-teasing mechanics. Bring on the sequel!
I really enjoyed my time with Viewfinder. Based on perspective illusions and the visual perception of our surroundings, the puzzles reminded me of Superliminal. I found them to be very diverse and creative, and I had a lot of fun reshaping the game world with the photographs I found or took with the in-game camera. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3752796128 There is also a lot of optional content, hidden areas to explore and tons of amusing artwork to look at or manipulate. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763104755 The game ends with a timed level. But you can disable the timer directly from the main menu, or the game will offer you to disable the timer after you failed the level a few times. Plotwise, I admit that I didnt understand everything, especially the ending. The plot is actually quite complex and becomes emotional toward the end. The story is told through various audio recordings and documents scattered throughout the game, occasional phone calls from a colleague and comments from Cait, the virtual cat inhabiting the game world. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763110821
From what I understood, due to global warming, Earth's ecosystem is failing and forests are gone. You, the player, are sent into a simulation that was previously built by 4 scientists. They used it as a testing ground to conduct various experiments while looking for a fix to restore the planet's failing climate. You get to explore the different testing areas that once belonged to each scientist. Each area introduces new mechanics and is filled with puzzles you must solve in order to progress the story.
While I greatly enjoyed solving the game puzzles, I found the plot somewhat disconnected from the purpose behind the puzzles. I think the link between the puzzles and the story was handled much better in other games, such as The Talos Principle. All in all, if you like puzzle games, you should definitely play this.
