Full disclosure, I paid 89 cents for this game. Secondly, this game has some installation issues and general functionality issues. I had to use mods, compatibility mode get it going as well as a 3rd party intervention to play at high FPS smoothly. All that said. If you can get the game working, it is a delightful game. Its a 2008 game, so have expectations. But it looks very good at 1080p. Very good story, fun progression. Fun combat. Except the bosses. Great exploration and discoverability. A genuine joy to play and finish this game. Took me 40 hrs. Hard to complain about an 89 cent game, but if it was trash I wouldn't have bothered finishing the game. Good stuff that holds up in 2026, if your willing to fix her up a bit.
Fun Short RPG. The huge city of Venice is cool. You need mods to prevent the game from crashing tho.

A very cool and often underappreciated action RPG, with focus on melee fighting. If you like games like Gothic and Two Worlds, definitely give this one a try.
good old school prime
Venetica - Gold Edition is an ambitious and idiosyncratic action RPG that reflects both the creative strengths and technical limitations of its era. Developed and published by Deck13, the game presents a dark fantasy interpretation of Renaissance-inspired Venice, blending political intrigue, mythological themes, and supernatural powers into a story that stands out for its concept alone. Rather than following a traditional hero’s journey, Venetica places players in the role of Scarlett, a young woman whose fate is tied directly to Death itself, immediately setting the narrative apart from more conventional fantasy RPGs. The story unfolds around a compelling central conflict involving the Corpus, a secretive council responsible for appointing Death. Their choice of Victor, a power-hungry necromancer, proves disastrous, as he exploits his position to bend life and death to his will. Scarlett’s personal tragedy becomes the catalyst for uncovering her true heritage as Death’s daughter, drawing her into a struggle that spans both the mortal world and the realm beyond. The narrative leans heavily into themes of destiny, corruption, and balance, and while its execution can be uneven at times, the premise itself carries enough intrigue to sustain interest throughout the lengthy campaign. Gameplay in Venetica blends third-person action combat with traditional RPG systems such as leveling, skill development, equipment management, and quest-driven progression. Combat is real-time and emphasizes melee encounters, with Scarlett wielding a variety of weapons that differ in speed, reach, and combo potential. As she grows stronger, she unlocks “twilight” abilities tied to her supernatural lineage, allowing her to manipulate enemies, enhance attacks, or interact with the spirit world. The ability to shift between the physical realm and the twilight realm is one of the game’s more distinctive mechanics, adding light puzzle-solving elements and occasional tactical advantages in combat. Exploration is a major component of the experience, and the game’s world design often succeeds in evoking atmosphere even when technical polish falls short. Venice and its surrounding regions are portrayed as labyrinthine spaces filled with canals, catacombs, plazas, and hidden paths, encouraging players to wander off the main path in search of side quests and secrets. These optional activities flesh out the setting, introducing local stories, rival factions, and bits of lore that give the world a sense of history and internal logic. While some areas can feel empty or repetitive, others capture a moody, almost gothic charm that reinforces the game’s dark fantasy identity. Character progression follows familiar RPG conventions, allowing players to invest points into attributes and abilities that shape Scarlett’s combat effectiveness. Equipment upgrades provide incremental power increases rather than dramatic playstyle changes, which can make long stretches of combat feel repetitive. Enemy variety is serviceable but limited, and encounters often rely more on numerical difficulty than complex behavior. As a result, combat can devolve into rhythmic attack patterns, especially in the later stages of the game, where challenge comes more from endurance than strategy. From a technical standpoint, Venetica clearly shows its age. Animations can be stiff, facial expressions lack subtlety, and camera behavior occasionally works against the player, particularly in tight environments or hectic fights. Voice acting and dialogue delivery vary in quality, sometimes undermining the emotional weight of key story moments. These rough edges can disrupt immersion, especially for players accustomed to modern RPG standards, but they also contribute to the game’s reputation as a cult classic defined as much by its flaws as its ambitions. The Gold Edition enhances the overall package by bundling additional content alongside the base game, offering more quests and value for players willing to invest the time. With a campaign that can easily stretch into dozens of hours when side content is included, Venetica offers a substantial experience, even if not every hour is equally engaging. Its strongest moments come when narrative ambition, world-building, and atmosphere align, allowing players to glimpse the unique vision Deck13 aimed to realize. Ultimately, Venetica - Gold Edition is a game best appreciated by players who enjoy story-driven RPGs and are willing to tolerate mechanical roughness in exchange for originality. It does not compete with genre leaders in terms of polish or combat depth, but it compensates with a memorable premise, a rare female protagonist with genuine narrative agency, and a world that dares to mix historical inspiration with mythological fantasy. For fans of older action RPGs or those drawn to unconventional settings and themes, Venetica remains a distinctive and worthwhile journey despite its imperfections. Rating: 7/10
Venetica is a very ambitious eurojank RPG and in my opinion a hidden gem for people who enjoy those. Unfortunately the game suffers from some technical issues. It crashed a few times and sometimes areas wouldn't load correctly. There were also some cases of minor stutters and frame drops. Also, being an older title, the game wasn't developed with modern resolutions in mind. Playing the game at 1440p made the UI pretty small in many cases, but it was still bearable. There are also many loading screens, but fortunately the load times are very short. Even though the graphics are very dated, I still think that the game can look quite good. The comic-inspired art style gives the important characters a lot of personality, and some of the boss designs look very interesting. But my personal favourite were definitely the locations. Especially the starting village and Venice itself look very cool. Instead of keeping it realistic, they leaned heavily into more fantastical elements, giving the city a unique look and feeling. The vibrant colour palette also adds to the sometimes fairy-tale-like atmosphere of the game. Exploration isn't as rewarding as I would like, and most side quests also aren't worth it in my opinion. But at least you don't get punished for exploring immediately without picking up all the quests. Usually, if you find a quest item and don't have the respective quest at the moment, you can still pick it up and complete the quest later without having to backtrack again. The story is alright but nothing innovative or special. Dialogues are mostly fine, and there were some chuckle-worthy moments. The combat system was deeper than expected at first but suffers from long stagger animations. If you fight only one enemy at a time, you can easily stunlock them just by spamming attacks. But the problem also exists the other way around. In my playthrough, when I died it was almost exclusively because I got stunlocked by a group of enemies without a way to escape the CC chain. While not being mechanically challenging and suffering from the usual janky controls which most eurojank RPGs have, I still enjoyed a lot of it because of the hit feedback, which is very satisfying in this game and, in my opinion, often the redeeming quality of low-budget RPG combat. Throughout the game, there are a few more enemy types that require you to use new strategies or weapon types, making the encounters a bit less repetitive, but towards the end, combat does get a bit tedious. The boss encounters leaned heavily towards gimmicks, but at least they were creative. All important bosses even have multiple phases. Some of them would have had the potential to be very impressive and memorable if it wasn't for the janky controls, hitboxes, and confusing camera movement. The progression is alright but nothing special. There is only a handful of armor sets and also not that many different weapons in the game. Unfortunately, you also get most of the best gear from the vendors instead of exploration or quests. The skill tree is bigger, and there were more different skills and abilities than expected, but unfortunately, the skill bar is very small, which limited my choice of skills a lot. The presentation itself is also solid for a eurojank RPG. There are multiple cutscenes for the story, and the German voice acting is very good. I only played a bit of the English version, but it was also fine. The soundtrack is also nice, but there are only a few tracks, and they tend to repeat themselves rather quickly.
