A fascinating, unusual visual novel (VN). Dark - even gruesome, in parts - but compelling. The shape of the story emerges relatively quickly, but leaves questions that make the reader want to unlock more information and more endings. There is always fear and running at the forefront of everything, but the protagonist (Sage) is more resilient and determined than it might seem at first. Eventually, one can feel her** compassion overriding her well-founded anxiety. **The game allows the player to select pronouns for the protagonist: "he/him" "she/her" and "they/them". I chose "she/her". The characters in the story are from a humanoid, deer-like race known as Fallow. The protagonist has been forced to leave The Village, which the Elders teach is the only sanctuary in existence against The Monster. The Monster lives in the dark forest that surrounds The Village. The story is told in a way that paints a picture of what The Village is like, and gently prods the protagonist and the reader to question everything they've been told. Choices: There are choices throughout the story, and most of the choices (and combinations of choices) matter to the ultimate outcome of the story. There is an underlying love story woven through all the mystery/ horror/ survival. However, few of the many different endings are tied directly to the love story. Moreover, despite the dark setting and hungry beasts, very few of the endings are a simple "you die / you get eaten". On the other hand, most of the endings aren't good. Still, I never felt the game lost sight of the potential for a "happy ending". Characters: There are three main characters: the protagonist, the monster, and the priestess. Each of them have a back story, and if you enjoy visual novels, then you'll probably want to explore all the dialogue options in order to learn more, regardless of ultimate outcome. I'd hoped for more than three in-depth characters when I got the game (I backed it on Kickstarter); however, what's there is good. Other: There is no voice acting, which is a pity, but reasonable given the moderate price. The user interface is fine if you're used to VNs, and if not then a quick look through the Help section lays everything out for you. The game has all the conveniences of Save/Load, Quicksave/Quickload, Skip (of various kinds), and options for scrolling back through read text/ scenes. The icons could have been bigger or clearer. There is an extensive Gallery for the CGs, which is nice. Also, the achievements specifically help you to track the various endings. The music is original and good. There are Steam achievements, which I appreciate. Overall: I enjoyed this game and I'm happy to recommend to other VN fans. The writing is solid, the plot is intriguing, the setting is well-crafted, and your choices clearly affect the outcome (and not just with respect to "death" or "romance"). The art is consistent throughout, and works with the writing to create the very dark mood and undertones. While the art isn't my favourite part of this game, it works with the story, and the CGs are good. If you get the chance, give this game a try! It's a good entry in the genre.

There's something in the trees I fear it Stalking me with two unholy sparks Counting every step I've taken Tryna find my way back to the start And I can feel the hungry staring I can hear the whispers on the wind Waiting for my feet to fail me Falling again World's First Cinema – The Woods (і далі)
These burdens we bury Down deep in the cold Too painful to carry Too heavy to hold
An amazing game with amazing art. Very plot heavy, and the two branches twist well with each other (as far as I can see, I still have a few endings to get). Good atmosphere, and the gore content, while graphic, doesn't enter the gross territory. Twist and Ana are two vastly different characters and so well written that I genuinely got attached and cried during one of Twist's endings. Without adding too many spoilers, I also really enjoyed the dream sequences and their character! Sage, as a protagonist, is at the start very naive which worried me (classic horror vn's with those kinds of protags tend to be kinda bad) but you can both watch them grow based on which branch you choose, and take it even a step further with the player immersion (etc. answering things in a certain way on one branch can get one result, and a different one of the second branch). Overall, I genuinely think this game is amazing and honestly think it's worth more than it's sold for!
Story/Plot: Twisted: A Dark Fairytale is a visual novel where you take on the role of Sage (you can choose the gender). Sage flees from the only home she's known, the Village, into the woods after discovering a growing blackness on her body. However, the woods are far from safe as she comes across the Twisted, individuals who've succumbed to the same corruption that inhabits Sage. In your travels, you will come across a couple individuals who may strongly influence your decisions (positively or negatively) and affect your ultimate fate. If I had a complaint here it would be that I couldn't turn off some of the world-building critical part of my mind. As an example, it is mentioned that the Village is walled off, and no one leaves unless exiled. It also mentions monster attacks during the day which caused me to think 'so how do these people eat? If they get attacked as soon as they leave, that leaves farming out.' Visuals: As a visual novel, don't expect to see a large variety of characters or backgrounds. However, the One thing that will stand out is that Sage, as well as other characters are essentially anthropomorphized deer. They walk on two legs, are covered in fur, and have antlers. This might turn some people off as they prefer normal humans, but I didn't mind it. Gameplay: The only gameplay you really in Twisted is through your choices. At moments of the story, certain actions and decisions appear. As such your choices do matter for Sage's ultimate fate. The Steam page itself says there are two diverging storylines, but there are some variations as well. Perhaps you don't win a certain person's heart, but stay as close friends...that sort of thing. Sound/Music: As a visual novel, Twisted has a limited soundtrack that I did like. While it isn't something that I want to listen to outside of the game, I'm just glad that it wasn't anything that made want to turn the volume off and listen to a podcast. The same goes for the sounds effects. While not common, when they do appear they are used to great affect like the sound of someone running through the grass, given an additional edge for what is meant to be a chase scene. Difficulty: This game is about as easy as visual novels get. You make a choice, and see what happens. The only difficulty I found was if you decided to get all the Achievements. There are only a small handful of nodes which really change things, so fine-tuning your decisions to get one of the more elusive achievements might be tough. Extras/Achievements: This game doesn't really have many extras, but does have a decent number of Steam Achievements for those so inclined. Recommendation Would I recommend the game? I actually would, though it is a bit on the shorter side (roughly 40,000 words). At that word count, some people might find it tough to justify spending $9.99 on the game. In a case like this, you might want to wait for a sale.
A unique, albeit short, dark fairytale visual novel. As a huge fan of monster love interests (yes, I'm weird), I loved Twist instantly. I had always wanted to see a story that went like this, so this VN was a very refreshing find. Needless to say, my review is biased with that in mind. :P First, I'll lay the few complaints I have with the game first. (a) At the beginning, you can choose the protagonist's pronouns, but whenever they (Sage) are referred to by others, it seems that the pronoun "they" is used regardless. So I'm not sure what the point was in having the option if it won't actually change anything. (b) The achievements are bugged. Even though I finished the game, I'm sitting at 85% because there are 3 achievements that won't show up (one for getting all of Ana's endings, one for getting all endings period, and one for an apparent extra 13th ending that doesn't exist in the game). It's not a huge deal, but if you care about achievements (or are even OCD like me and that 85% bugs you) it might be a little annoying. There are also a few empty CG slots in the gallery, making the player think they are missing 4-5 when they aren't. (c) The visual novel is very short. I'm admittedly a pretty fast reader, but I finished my first playthrough in just an hour and ten minutes. Skipping through and following a walkthrough, I got the rest of the 11 endings in another hour and a half. So, my total playtime to completion was around 2.5 hours. A short visual novel does not maketh a bad one though, and indeed the story used its short length well (besides the complaint below). However, I can see it being difficult for the average player to justify spending $10 on a game they can finish in less than 3 hours. I made an exception only because the story and characters were right up my alley, and out of respect for indie devs. (d) While I don't feel that the story itself is rushed, the endings do feel somewhat abrupt, and even a few extra lines into each one would have helped bring proper closure. With all that out of the way, here's what I liked: (A) It's nice that the main species of the game are non-humans. (They're anthropomorphized deer-like humanoids) It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's good to see some variety. (B) Twist was a pretty great monster love interest. They gave some humanity yet didn't erase what makes him a monster, either. A few of the scenes between Sage and Twist were downright adorable. (huge bias here though, lol) (C) Art and music are both great, and synchronize with the story perfectly. They both really help set the mood and establish the tone of the setting. (D) Story has good twists (heh), and is engaging throughout. Never a dull moment. Altogether, if you're a fan of dark fairytales and/or monster love interests (hello fellow weirdos <3) then absolutely get this game, it will be worth the price to you. If those two things aren't particularly your thing, you might want to wait for a sale to justify the purchase. All in all, this was a great effort and we desperately need more visual novels with this kind of dark fairytale vibe, imo. :)
This game was amazing, it was different and kept me interested throughout the entire story. The art, music, sound effects and writing were all very good. There are plenty of choices to choose from which result in multiple endings. I got attached to Sage and Twist throughout the story and ended up rooting for them even though some of the endings were not what i was hoping for or expecting. I definitely recommend this visual novel even though it was short and left me wanting more it does not take away from the fact that it was fantastic.
It was short but a good story. I keep reviews pretty short. Hence the TLDR is I do not regret spending my time on this game. For the longer version with some minor complaints: I wish the game had been a little longer just to flesh out some of the endings. One minor criticism, that is just a personal preference, is I wish there had been the ending I wanted. And I will just leave it at that to avoid spoilers because there are 12 endings. My only other complaint is that clearly the game is bugged unless there is a secret 13th ending I have not found. I should have all the achievements at this point and I can't get the final 3 and it seems this is a problem for many people who have played the game. But if your like me and love getting the little 100% stuff on your trophy's beware this game may not let you have it.
