The core gameplay of Zelda, the challenge level of Dark Souls, and the cryptic lore of Hollow Knight
Great Game

One of the best indie games I've played in a long time, I went in without any expectations and, boy, it was such a gem. In the first few minutes of gameplay it gives a lot of Zelda 1 (the original 1987 one) vibes: you are cast into a huge overworld with no gear, no obvious goals or explanation, you're on your own to explore around and figure things out. Then you find your first weapon and you'll quickly realize there's lots of secret passages and hidden chests. The inspiration is clear, even the in-game manual that you complete by collecting its scattered pages in the game world is reminiscent to the NES manuals of old. Also: secrets... lots of them! At first I thought: "nice! this is one of those games that reward curiosity and thorough exploration". But eventually you'll realize that secrets ARE the game and the in-game manual is not just a love letter to, it's 100% needed to progress. There's zero hand-holding, which is so refreshing nowadays, but this game doubles down on it so hard at times, that it might be too much for more casual gamers. You'll soon learn most text is based on a cryptic rune language with some English words sprinkled here and there to hint you about the general meaning, you'll often run into cryptic rooms or structures that clearly look important but you won't have any idea of what to do with them. But once you get grasp of the logic of the game and puzzles everything starts to make sense, I can't remember any other game that gave me so many eureka moments, it's very rewarding, but also frustrating at times. And then there's the bosses... there's only a handful of them, but they're tough when you first run into them. There's a souls-like quality to the combat in Tunic, bosses need to be learned and cracked, learning how to parry properly helps a lot. By this point, the simmilarities with Zelda fell completely apart... Zelda was never this difficult, there's no dungeon-based progression, and some secrets are way way too hard to figure out without a guide. You can definitely get through the game without deciphering the rune language, and without pursuing most secrets, but then you just get the bad ending, which is really underwhelming. This game will make you work REALLY hard for the good ending and, frankly, by the end of that journey I started to feel overwhelmed and fatigued by the amount of little puzzles. Translating the runes are mandatory for some of them, thankfully someone made a website for that. I really recommend Tunic to people who love old-school challengues, puzzles and exploration, you can tell the devs poured their hearts on this game. They managed to capture the spirit, but with modernized mechanics and gameplay.
A fun exploration game that has some cool and challenging puzzles. Playing it blind and figuring things out was really fun
