As always, all you need to do is press the “←” key and keep walking.
There are no complicated controls.
This title marks a return to the roots of Tsugunohi, revisiting the visual style and unsettling atmosphere of the series’ earliest entries.
A sweltering summer afternoon in a quiet residential neighborhood.
A hazy brightness hangs over the streets, evoking those childhood walks home when, for some reason, you just didn’t want to go back.
A girl who lives in a house covered in graffiti walks this same road home from school once again.
The “righteous” people who appear day after day.
A thread of salvation dangling from the sky.
Holding a white umbrella, her mother tells her:
“I’ll protect you.”——
With each passing day, the once-blue sky slowly sinks into red,
and the familiar road home quietly begins to fall apart.
The story unfolds across multiple chapters, from Chapter 1 through the Final Chapter.
And at the very end, one choice awaits you:
“Take her hand / Don’t take her hand.”
Returning to the feel of the early Tsugunohi games while reimagining that fear for the present day, this is a new Tsugunohi.
Enjoy the journey, beginning with an ordinary walk home.

4. At the end of the story, one final choice awaits you: “Take her hand / Don’t take her hand.”

Tsugunohi -The Thread That Beckons to Heaven- is a psychological horror adventure that demonstrates how an ordinary journey can become deeply unsettling when familiar surroundings slowly stop obeying expectations. Developed by ImCyan and published by Vaka Game Magazine, this installment stays faithful to the distinctive philosophy of the Tsugunohi series, where extremely simple interaction places nearly all of the emphasis on atmosphere, visual changes, sound, repetition, and mounting dread. Rather than giving players weapons or complicated puzzles, it asks them to keep moving through an increasingly disturbing situation and pay attention to what changes along the way. The story follows a schoolgirl making her way home during an oppressively hot summer afternoon. At first, the Japanese residential neighborhood has an almost nostalgic quality, evoking memories of quiet streets, summer heat, and the strangely empty feeling that familiar places can have at certain times of day. That normality does not last. The girl's graffiti-covered home, the appearance of people convinced of their own righteousness, her mother carrying a white umbrella, and a mysterious thread descending from the heavens establish an uncomfortable situation long before the supernatural elements fully reveal themselves. The narrative gradually blends personal suffering with increasingly surreal events, creating uncertainty about what is real, what is symbolic, and whether the apparent promise of salvation can actually be trusted. Gameplay remains intentionally straightforward. Much of the experience revolves around walking in a single direction and observing the environment. This may sound excessively basic compared with conventional horror games, but that simplicity is central to the design. Each repeated journey teaches the player what the neighborhood normally looks like, making even small alterations increasingly noticeable. A location that appeared harmless before can suddenly contain something unnatural, while characters and environmental details begin behaving differently. Eventually, simply progressing becomes uncomfortable because the player expects something to be wrong even when nothing immediately happens. The repetition is particularly effective because the game steadily corrupts its established sense of familiarity. The neighborhood becomes less welcoming with each progression, and the summer atmosphere gradually takes on a nightmarish quality. One of the most memorable visual developments is the transformation of the sky from peaceful blue toward threatening red. Instead of immediately overwhelming the screen with monsters and grotesque imagery, the horror grows through incremental changes. This approach encourages constant observation, turning background scenery into an important part of the experience. Its visual presentation intentionally recalls the earlier identity of the series, with 2D side-scrolling environments that combine mundane Japanese scenery with surreal and disturbing imagery. There are noticeable elements associated with liminal-space and dreamlike aesthetics, making the neighborhood feel simultaneously recognizable and strangely disconnected from reality. The ordinary surroundings are important because the supernatural material becomes more effective when contrasted against something believable. As the environment deteriorates, the game creates the impression that reality itself is gradually being contaminated. The narrative carries darker subject matter underneath its supernatural premise. Themes and imagery involving bullying, online harassment, defamation, blood, death, suicide, and self-harm contribute to the oppressive tone. These subjects give the protagonist's circumstances an emotional dimension beyond simple paranormal scares. The relationship between the girl and her protective mother also becomes increasingly important as the story progresses. Meanwhile, the mysterious thread supposedly connected to salvation introduces an intriguing contradiction: something presented as hopeful becomes increasingly suspicious as the world surrounding it grows more horrifying. Progression through multiple chapters provides a structured escalation toward the final sequence. One of the more interesting decisions is giving the player an explicit choice near the conclusion involving whether to accept an offered hand. Because most of the experience intentionally limits player agency, introducing a meaningful decision at such a crucial moment makes the choice feel more significant. It also fits the game's recurring questions about trust, protection, salvation, and whether apparently benevolent forces actually have the protagonist's interests at heart. Audio plays an important role because the minimal gameplay leaves plenty of room for players to concentrate on environmental sounds and sudden disturbances. Silence and restrained stretches can be just as effective as obvious scares, creating anticipation before anything actually happens. The linear structure also gives the game considerable control over pacing. It knows approximately where the player's attention will be and can build individual moments accordingly. Players who enjoy carefully directed horror are likely to appreciate this approach, although those expecting free exploration may find it restrictive. The main weakness is consequently tied directly to the game's defining concept. There is little mechanical depth compared with survival horror or puzzle-focused adventures. Players primarily interested in combat, exploration, inventory management, challenging puzzles, or extensive decision-making will probably find the experience too passive. The repeated walking sequences can also feel deliberately slow. However, players who enjoy atmospheric Japanese horror and environmental storytelling may consider this restraint a strength rather than a shortcoming. Steam Deck compatibility is not officially rated as Steam Deck Verified or Playable at the time of assessment, so it should be treated as having no confirmed official Deck compatibility status. Its simple control requirements and relatively straightforward 2D presentation suggest that it is well suited conceptually to handheld play, but this should not be confused with an official Valve compatibility rating. Players intending to use a Steam Deck should therefore expect that manual adjustments or compatibility considerations may be necessary until an official status is provided. Ultimately, Tsugunohi -The Thread That Beckons to Heaven- is most effective when it turns familiarity against the player. Its summer neighborhood, repeated journey home, gradually changing scenery, unsettling social themes, mysterious heavenly thread, and increasingly hostile atmosphere create horror through anticipation rather than mechanical complexity. It is intentionally narrow in scope, but that focus allows the environmental transformation and psychological tension to remain at the center of the experience. For players receptive to slow, observational horror where seemingly harmless details become sources of anxiety, it offers another memorable interpretation of the series' deceptively simple formula.
