A short and sweet visuell novelle. Well worth to play. The artstyle is good. The dialogue is good. And the music is good to. Recommended if you want something short and simple.
“If you become an island, then I shall be the sea.”

Trail of Stars is a poetic and atmospheric visual novel that focuses on emotion, exploration, and personal connection. The story unfolds like a gentle journey through memory and feeling, with moments that feel thoughtful and reflective rather than dramatic or fast-paced. The art style is soft and beautiful, with backgrounds and character art that create a calming, almost dreamy atmosphere. The music complements this mood nicely and helps make each scene feel special. The writing leans heartfelt, and many parts of the story linger emotionally even after you finish playing. Because the experience is more about atmosphere and introspection than plot twists or intense action, some players may find the pacing slow. The choices don’t always lead to wildly different outcomes, so replay value isn’t very high. Overall, Trail of Stars is a soothing and emotional experience best enjoyed at a slow pace. It won’t be for everyone, but if you like games that feel like stories you walk through rather than races to finish, it’s worth a play. Rating: 8/10
I'm not sure for how long I had this in my library but I finally had the opportunity to play it. Trail of Stars is very short, you'll be able to complete the game and all achievements in less than 30 minutes. But the writing and art style is truly beautiful. Usually I don't expect too much of free games just to experience very well written stories. Even the music was very fitting.
Trail of Stars is a brief but thoughtfully assembled visual novel that concentrates on romance, vulnerability, and the difficult transition into adulthood within a medieval fantasy setting. Developed and published by ENDYSIS, it follows two young squires traveling alongside the nobleman they serve during a hunt. Their circumstances are far from comfortable, with one protagonist living under considerable uncertainty while the other carries intense resentment toward their lord. Against this uneasy backdrop, the connection between the two squires becomes the emotional center of the story, transforming an established childhood friendship into something more intimate. The game is deliberately small in scope, with a story containing fewer than 3,000 words and two possible endings. This makes it an experience that can easily be completed in one sitting. Instead of padding its narrative with unnecessary conversations or complicated subplots, it moves quickly through its central conflict and relationship. The downside is that some interesting aspects of the characters and setting receive only limited development. Players accustomed to visual novels lasting dozens of hours, offering numerous romance routes, or featuring elaborate branching decisions will find the experience considerably simpler. Those who enjoy short interactive fiction, however, may appreciate how efficiently it communicates its ideas. Romance provides much of the emotional appeal. The childhood-friends-to-lovers premise gives the central pair an existing history, allowing their affection to feel more believable despite the short running time. Their relationship is also strengthened by the dangerous environment surrounding them. Feelings of affection, loyalty, fear, and uncertainty frequently overlap, creating a romance that feels less like carefree escapism and more like two vulnerable people finding comfort in each other. The story touches on first love and growing up while examining how personal relationships can be affected by differences in social status and authority. Player choice is present, but it should not be mistaken for an elaborate decision system. With only two endings available, Trail of Stars functions primarily as an interactive short story rather than a deeply branching narrative adventure. Decisions provide some agency over how events conclude, yet the primary attraction remains experiencing the characters and atmosphere rather than repeatedly navigating a complicated web of alternate routes. The small number of endings also makes seeing the available outcomes practical without demanding a major time commitment. The hand-drawn visual presentation complements the story especially well. Character illustrations have a soft, storybook quality that fits the romantic medieval atmosphere, while the backgrounds establish the environment without distracting from the dialogue. Dedicated illustrations for important moments and endings give significant scenes additional emotional weight. Although the project clearly operates on an indie scale, the artwork gives it an identity that feels intentional rather than generic. Its visual direction is particularly effective at balancing the warmth of its romantic elements against the more troubling aspects of the surrounding world. Music and ambient audio further strengthen that atmosphere. The soundtrack favors an intimate and sometimes melancholic character instead of attempting to make every scene sound grand or dramatic. Cello performances are particularly effective because they naturally complement the story's combination of tenderness and sadness. Environmental sound effects provide additional texture, helping scenes feel less static than they might in a purely text-and-image presentation. Considering the project originated from a game jam and was produced within a limited development period, its different creative components fit together surprisingly well. Despite its gentle artwork and romantic focus, the narrative contains material that can become uncomfortable. Themes and content include abuses of authority, unwanted advances, violence, blood and death, alcohol, suggestive situations, an off-screen animal death, and implications surrounding grooming and unequal relationships. These darker subjects establish why safety, trust, and personal agency matter so much to the protagonists. They also prevent the setting from becoming an entirely idealized fantasy. Players expecting nothing more than a lighthearted romance should therefore be prepared for a story with a noticeably darker undertone. There are also four Steam achievements, offering completion-focused players another reason to investigate both endings. Because the game is free to play, its short duration is easier to accept than it would be in a substantial premium release. It feels more like a polished narrative vignette than a conventional full-length visual novel. The concise format makes it approachable for newcomers to the genre while still providing enough distinctive artwork, music, and emotional storytelling to make the experience worthwhile. Steam Deck compatibility is currently best regarded as unverified rather than officially confirmed as Verified or Playable by Valve. The game's lightweight visual-novel structure, controller support, and Linux compatibility are encouraging signs for Steam Deck use, and its dialogue-focused gameplay is naturally suited to handheld sessions. Nevertheless, without an official compatibility classification, players should not interpret this as a guarantee that every aspect will function perfectly on Steam Deck. Trail of Stars ultimately works because it embraces its limited scale instead of pretending to be a much larger adventure. Its strongest qualities are the appealing illustrated presentation, intimate soundtrack, sympathetic central relationship, and efficient storytelling. Greater character development and more meaningful branching would have added depth, but expanding the experience too aggressively could also have weakened its concise storybook character. For players interested in short romantic visual novels with darker fantasy undertones, it offers an attractive and emotionally sincere experience that respects the player's time. Rating: 8/10
