All I can say is that this game is good and Okina may or may not sold me suspicious stuff from Eirin Yagokoro 😁

Touhou Tenkuushou: Hidden Star in Four Seasons is a fast-paced bullet hell shooter that perfectly demonstrates why the Touhou Project series has remained so influential within the shoot’em up genre for decades, the game combines overwhelming projectile patterns, memorable music, and highly strategic gameplay into an experience that feels both chaotic and beautifully controlled. While the series has always been known for intense difficulty and screen-filling attacks, Hidden Star in Four Seasons manages to introduce fresh mechanics that give the gameplay more flexibility and tactical depth without losing the precision and challenge longtime fans expect. The story revolves around a strange seasonal disturbance spreading throughout Gensokyo. Snow appears in the middle of summer, spring flowers bloom out of season, and nature itself seems completely unstable. This mysterious imbalance sets the stage for another supernatural investigation led by familiar Touhou protagonists. Although the narrative is relatively simple and mostly delivered through short dialogue exchanges before and after battles, the unusual seasonal phenomenon gives the game a distinct atmosphere. The shifting environments and seasonal imagery create a feeling that the world itself has become unpredictable, which fits perfectly with the intense gameplay. At the center of the experience is the game’s unique seasonal mechanic. Players select one of four seasonal powers before starting a run, with each season dramatically affecting combat behavior and attack style. Spring focuses on homing-style offense, summer emphasizes aggressive wide-area attacks, autumn delivers spread-based power, and winter relies on concentrated precision. As enemies are defeated, players collect seasonal energy that can either enhance offensive capabilities or be released defensively to clear bullets from the screen. This system adds far more strategy than a standard shoot’em up formula. Instead of relying solely on reflexes and memorization, players constantly decide whether to save seasonal energy for stronger attacks or spend it defensively during dangerous situations. The mechanic changes how every stage is approached, giving each run a slightly different rhythm depending on the chosen season. Because of this, Hidden Star in Four Seasons gains a significant amount of replay value as players experiment with different seasonal combinations and playstyles. The bullet patterns themselves are spectacular. Touhou games are famous for transforming enemy attacks into visual performances, and Hidden Star in Four Seasons continues that tradition beautifully. Bosses unleash intricate waves of colorful projectiles that spiral, bloom, scatter, and flood the screen in elaborate formations. Even when the screen becomes almost completely filled with bullets, the visual clarity remains impressive enough for skilled players to identify safe paths through the chaos. There is a strange elegance to the game’s difficulty because every attack pattern feels carefully designed rather than random or unfair. Boss battles are consistently creative and memorable. Each encounter introduces new attack styles and mechanics tied to the game’s seasonal themes and supernatural characters. Some bosses demand precise positioning while others challenge the player to survive dense walls of projectiles through tiny gaps and rapid movement adjustments. The gradual escalation of difficulty keeps the experience tense throughout the campaign, especially during the later stages where attacks become far more aggressive and visually overwhelming. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its soundtrack. As expected from the Touhou series, the music is exceptional from beginning to end. Every stage and boss theme carries its own energy and personality, blending fast-paced melodies with emotional undertones that perfectly match the gameplay. Some tracks feel playful and mysterious while others create intense excitement during difficult encounters. The soundtrack enhances the game tremendously because the music and bullet patterns work together to create battles that feel almost rhythmic in their intensity. Visually, Hidden Star in Four Seasons embraces a colorful and expressive art style that gives each area its own identity. Seasonal effects such as falling snow, drifting petals, and autumn leaves constantly fill the screen, helping reinforce the theme of environmental imbalance. Character portraits are vibrant and full of personality, while the backgrounds shift between magical landscapes and surreal seasonal scenery. The graphics may not aim for photorealism, but the artistic direction gives the game a timeless appeal that suits the Touhou universe perfectly. The game also deserves praise for its accessibility compared to some older entries in the franchise. Hidden Star in Four Seasons was one of the major Touhou releases to gain official international exposure through Steam, helping introduce the series to a much larger audience. Multiple difficulty settings allow newcomers to experience the game without immediately facing its harshest challenges, while expert players can still enjoy the brutal precision and high-level mastery the series is known for. However, the game still remains extremely demanding by normal shooter standards. Even on lower difficulties, the sheer density of projectiles can feel intimidating for players unfamiliar with bullet hell games. Later stages require careful concentration, pattern recognition, and precise movement that may overwhelm newcomers at first. The gameplay is deeply rewarding once patterns become familiar, but the learning curve is undeniably steep. The narrative may also feel limited for players expecting a story-heavy experience. Dialogue sequences are brief and often rely on Touhou’s eccentric humor and established lore. Fans of the franchise will likely appreciate the returning characters and mythology, but newcomers may occasionally feel disconnected from some conversations or references. Fortunately, the gameplay and atmosphere remain strong enough to carry the experience even without extensive narrative depth. Despite these minor drawbacks, Hidden Star in Four Seasons succeeds because of how refined and confident its design feels. The seasonal mechanics add genuine innovation to the classic Touhou formula while preserving the precision, creativity, and visual spectacle that define the series. Every run feels rewarding because the game constantly pushes players to improve while also encouraging experimentation with different seasonal abilities. Touhou Tenkuushou: Hidden Star in Four Seasons stands as one of the strongest entries in the franchise and one of the best modern bullet hell shooters available. It combines beautiful visual design, phenomenal music, strategic gameplay systems, and thrilling boss encounters into an experience that remains engaging long after the first completed run. For fans of challenging shoot’em ups and intricate projectile-based combat, the game delivers a rewarding blend of difficulty, style, and replayability that fully captures the magic of the Touhou series.
