This game had so much potential. What a disappointment it was when I actually bought it. Now the game itself is hugely innovative and I love the refreshing new mechanics (for the most part, the outpost system is seriously annoying, more on that later) - but the complete breakdown in optimization with loading times just ruins it. My computer can handle every other total war game pre-pharaoh, even including the infamously horribly optimized Atilla, but for some reason with Pharaoh / Dynasties, it takes SO long to load into the campaign / battles to the point where I refuse to enter battles and just auto-resolve everything (which shocker, makes the game largely boring). Im not sure what you guys did to this game to destroy the loading times, but it needs to be looked into. Especially with how common this issue seems based on my searches on the internet. Now with that being said, the actual game itself is brilliant. The graphics are such a huge improvement and the combat actually feels like real combat instead of a bunch of dudes hitting the air around them, the arrow volleys specifically look stunning. There is literally two things about this game that just ruin it for me. 1 - The outpost system. I don't think the outpost system itself is bad, but as it stands they are a waste to even make early game because your enemies just CONSTANTLY raze them and you spend more time rebuilding / repairing them than you do actually getting any benefits. And because of my next point, there is hardly anything you can do about this...speaking of which... 2 - The absurd upkeep costs for armies. With how crazy expensive it is to field any armies over 5 units, or more than 2 full armies, there is hardly anything you can do to chase down enemies and you are forced to just ignore them and tunnel vision on their cities to destroy them before they destroy you. It literally destroys your economy to fill out an army fully, and yet the AI will have multiple full armies no issue. There is even a setting to reduce the upkeep, so basically if you want actual engaging gameplay you need to cheat, otherwise you are stuck with boring warfare where you just have to B-line to the enemy capital while constantly repairing your outposts. Again, the game itself has so much potential, just let down by very strange decisions and horrible loading times.

This is specifically a multiplayer review for Total Barter: Pharaoh. I'll start off by saying this this the most stable game in the franchise in terms of crashes and desynchs. The battles, though being few and far between, are actually quite good. Excellent changes to Line of Sight and very impactful weather. I did mention this is a multiplayer review though, so I am going to mention the experience, imagine waiting for your co-op partner as they try and get some vital resources from an AI-faction in a process that seems like wringing water from stone. Simultanious turns would go hard here, but the devs mentioned that other features would be "too hard" to implement, so I can only assume that is the excuse for everything missing. Depending on who your playing, your campaing will consist of trading, going to church, visiting the market, mostly hanging out in your settlement, and being jealous of the multiple 20 stacks the AI brings to attack you. Honestly, the first 30 turns are some of the most fun you can have in the franchise, but then Administrative Burden punishes you for attempting to advance in your campaign. I actually kind of like this Bronze Age LARPing in a single player capacity, its very immersive, but I am not about to subject someone to waiting for me to finish making a hundred deals for small amounts of copper per turn.
