The most realistic eastern european survival simulator yet.
Fantastic "One more Turn" game. Has some rough edges but all in all I recommend this game wholeheartedly. My rating 8/10, just one more turn aaand it's past midnight again.

Thea: The Awakening offers an inventive mixture of turn-based strategy, survival, role-playing, crafting, resource management, and roguelike elements within a bleak world inspired by Slavic mythology. Developed and published by MuHa Games, it avoids the usual fantasy premise of commanding mighty armies and conquering vast kingdoms. Instead, the player assumes the role of a deity watching over a small group of survivors after a catastrophic force known as the Darkness has devastated civilization. The resulting experience is less about domination and more about keeping a fragile community alive in a world where starvation, monsters, poor decisions, and unfortunate encounters can quickly destroy years of progress. Village management forms the foundation of the experience. Survivors can gather materials, construct buildings, research useful technologies, craft equipment, and perform specialized jobs according to their abilities. The extensive crafting system is particularly impressive, with thousands of possible items and numerous materials influencing what can be produced. Equipment is more than a simple statistical upgrade because individual villagers can carry weapons, armor, tools, and supplies that directly affect their effectiveness. As survivors gain experience, their abilities in areas such as gathering, healing, diplomacy, combat, and magic improve, making experienced villagers increasingly valuable. Losing one of these veterans can therefore be a significant setback rather than a disposable casualty. Exploration introduces the game's strongest sense of risk and discovery. Expeditions leave the safety of the settlement to travel across a procedurally generated hex-based world in search of resources, quests, unusual locations, and valuable opportunities. Every person assigned to an expedition is someone who will temporarily be unavailable to perform work or defend the village, creating an important balance between exploration and domestic survival. Sending a powerful group into the wilderness may improve its chances of returning safely, but doing so can leave the settlement dangerously understaffed. The procedural structure works especially well with the survival mechanics. More than 200 nonlinear events can appear throughout a campaign, and their consequences range from useful rewards to devastating losses. Over 100 types of creatures inhabit the world, many drawing directly from Slavic folklore. Individual creatures can also have different statistics and abilities, preventing encounters from becoming entirely predictable. The day-and-night cycle contributes additional tension because visibility is more favorable during daylight while creatures become increasingly dangerous and aggressive after dark. One of the most distinctive mechanics is its card-based challenge system. Confrontations are not restricted to conventional physical combat. Depending on the skills of the party and the nature of the situation, players may overcome challenges through diplomacy, hunting, curses, or other approaches. This makes party composition considerably more important than simply recruiting the strongest fighters. A character who appears mediocre in direct combat might become invaluable when a particular encounter demands intelligence, social ability, magic, or another specialized skill. The system has a noticeable learning curve, but understanding its rules eventually turns encounters into thoughtful strategic puzzles. The narrative presentation complements the mechanics effectively. Rather than relying on cinematic storytelling, much of the adventure emerges through illustrated events, written descriptions, decisions, and their consequences. Choices can influence the direction of a campaign and contribute toward multiple possible endings. Unlocks and rewards can also carry into later playthroughs, providing an additional reason to begin another campaign after victory or defeat. This progression combines effectively with randomized worlds and events, giving the game substantial replay value. The atmosphere deserves particular recognition. Slavic mythology provides a refreshing alternative to more conventional fantasy settings, introducing creatures such as Baba Yagas and Strigas alongside numerous other supernatural dangers. The world feels mysterious, hostile, and frequently unsettling. Its mature storytelling can become exceptionally dark, touching on subjects involving bloody sacrifice, sexual assault, violence toward children and animals, and limited nudity. These elements reinforce the grim setting, although players uncomfortable with such themes should be aware that this is considerably darker than its illustrated presentation might initially suggest. Its greatest weakness is the barrier to entry. Several interconnected systems are introduced relatively quickly, and understanding how crafting, expeditions, character abilities, resources, challenges, and settlement development interact requires patience. Randomness can occasionally produce frustrating situations where careful preparation is undermined by an unfortunate event. Repeated campaigns can also expose familiar patterns despite the procedural generation. The interface and presentation are functional rather than luxurious, so players accustomed to highly polished modern strategy games may initially find the experience somewhat dated. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Despite its rougher edges, Thea: The Awakening remains a remarkably distinctive strategy experience. Its combination of settlement survival, individualized villagers, dangerous expeditions, enormous crafting possibilities, procedural storytelling, folklore-inspired enemies, and unconventional card challenges creates an identity that few strategy games replicate. Success feels earned because survival depends on preparation and adaptability rather than military strength alone. For players willing to learn its unusual systems and accept occasional procedural unpredictability, it provides a deep, atmospheric, and highly replayable journey through a hostile mythological wilderness. Rating: 8/10
