The Wreck

This is a heartbreaking, hopeful story about loss and the messy aftermath. It does a great job of showing the complexity of people. The game mechanics are interesting and you do get to make choices for how to respond to things that will affect the story. Though there is still a fairly unchangable way that things unfold. I recommend it for people who like visual stories.

Another purely narrative game... jumping right into this immediately after 1000xResist was interesting. The games are similar in that they're purely narrative experiences, without much in the way of game mechanics or player choice, but with presentation ideas that elevate them somewhat from a traditional visual novel. The Wreck tells the story of 3 generations of women in a family, centered around the incident of the PC, Junon, getting in a car accident. The story is entirely grounded in ordinary peoples' lives in our real world, there are no supernatural or genre elements; there are some fantastic things that are presented in the game, but they're more in the category of literary devices (flashbacks, dream sequences). The visual presentation is excellent, with great use of cinematic camera angles and limited animation. One particularly memorable sequence is presented as a series of time-lapse still scenes, similar to what you might get from a security camera that you can click forward and backward through. There's also a cool feature where when you pause the game, it cuts to movie script text editor that shows the events of the game that you've been seeing as a script that is being written. There are only a handful of characters in the game, but they're all well-drawn and interesting, complex people. The voice acting is also really excellent, especially Junon, which is good because listening to her is mostly what you'll be doing in the game.
