Great
The Spike Cross is probably one of the most enjoyable volleyball games I have played in a while. I went into it expecting a fairly simple sports game, but I quickly found that there is more depth here than I expected. The biggest thing that makes it different is that I only control one player during a match, so I have to focus on positioning, timing and making the right plays instead of trying to control the entire team. The volleyball itself feels really satisfying once I get used to the timing. I can receive the ball, set up attacks, block at the net and go for powerful spikes, with different attacking options such as quick attacks, pipe attacks and open attacks. Getting a good connection on a spike and watching it fly past the opposing team feels great. At the same time, a badly timed jump or poor position can leave me completely exposed, so I have to pay attention to what is happening rather than just constantly attacking. I also liked how much the game makes me think about positioning. Since I am responsible for one character, I cannot simply fix every mistake happening around me. I need to understand where the ball is going and react quickly. The faster pace can make rallies surprisingly intense, especially when both sides are making quick plays near the net. Once I started getting comfortable with the controls, I found myself enjoying the little moments where everything came together perfectly. The story is another part that I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I did. I follow Siwoo on his volleyball journey and get to meet various characters from the world of The Spike. It gives the game something to work toward outside of individual matches and makes the characters feel like more than just players on a court. I liked the combination of volleyball and character focused scenes because it gives the game a nice anime inspired personality. There is also quite a lot of variety outside the standard matches. Tournament and Colosseum modes give me different challenges, while beach volleyball changes the feel of the game. The different content means I am not always doing exactly the same thing, and I appreciated having reasons to keep playing after progressing through the main story. There is also local multiplayer, which gives the game another way to enjoy the volleyball itself. The biggest issue for me is the free to play structure. There are in game purchases and chance based elements, so the progression can sometimes feel like it is designed around keeping me coming back rather than simply letting me unlock everything naturally. I also think the game takes some time to properly understand because the controls are easy to pick up but harder to master. When matches become faster and the opponents get better, mistakes can become pretty punishing. Overall, I think The Spike Cross is a really strong volleyball game that manages to make the sport exciting without needing complicated controls. The one player control system gives every rally a personal feeling, while the different attacks and defensive actions give the matches plenty of depth. I enjoyed the story, the anime inspired presentation and the extra volleyball modes too. The free to play systems are the main thing that holds it back for me, but underneath that is a genuinely fun sports game that I could easily spend a lot of time playing. Rating: 7.4/10
