About
Another restless, sleepless night... from the mind of Maggot Baits creator Tatsuya Kurashiki comes a twisted love story!
A thrilling visual novel
Japanese voice acting
Multiple endings
Kabukicho, Shinjuku. There’s a hotel here where I work as a live-in cleaner—or at least, that’s my day job.
By night, I suffer from chronic insomnia with just one cure: killing people. So I moonlight as a yakuza bigwig’s pet killer, waiting for him to toss me a bone and order a hit so I can sleep. Might sound like a fine line to walk, but my life’s pretty quiet. Pretty stable.
Until I meet this girl, Azami. Defeating her got me a night of sleep so peaceful, I’ve been mulling over the idea of keeping her around. Thing is, my boss wants her dead, and if I bite the hand that feeds me, there’s my quiet, stable life out the door...

Azami
Marie Keda
A mysterious girl who happens to visit the hotel the protagonist lives in. A cheerful and carefree young woman with an ever-present shadow, she ends up being hunted by the yakuza after a client dies on her.
Haruhiko Nire
Netoru Irakusa
An elite detective from Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Detective Division who wanders Kabukicho, seemingly in search of something, even though his beat is actually East Shinjuku. While he may look kind, he’s a shrewd man who knows not just judo and kendo but various other practical martial arts as well.
Sayuki Ugai
Ren Kureno
A detective from East Shinjuku’s Detective Department Section 4 who’s lost any shred of morals or sense of duty. With her propensity for violence and greed, it’s no surprise she’s in the pocket of the Aoike Gathering who rule Kabukicho’s underbelly.
Mirei Bessho
Murasaki Fujino
A brash and intelligent but stubborn young woman. She met the protagonist in Kabukicho and became fast friends with Azami.
Yun Shi Gu
Jimu Kyari
The owner of an illegal business in Kabukicho. When he was young, he was the leader of a group of hot-blooded Shanghainese militants. Now he has been reduced to scraping together a living under the watchful eyes of the yakuza and the police, yet this does nothing to deter him from sticking it out in Kabukicho.
Li Jian Rong
Yukine Takane
The elderly driver for Yun’s illegal business. Being a warm and sincere man who’s well-liked by the ladies he chauffeurs belies the fact that he was once the boss of Yun and a legendary Chinese gang who exercised power over Kabukicho.
Lady Dharma
Mako Ayane
A wheelchair-bound, limbless mass murderer who has weapons stowed within her prosthetic legs. Her modified wheelchair tops out at 50 KPH, allowing her to hunt her prey to the ends of the earth. She’s become something of an urban legend in Tokyo.
Mamoru Tougi
Torowa Ando
The leading subordinate of the Aoike Gathering, the secondary organization under the large-area designated yakuza group known as the S Gathering that rules Kabukicho. A rising star in the organization, he’s one of the candidates to become the leader of the Aoike Gathering. He’s a man of few words and great restraint with the ruthlessness to kill anyone without hesitation should it be required.
Shinsuke Kaieda
Tetsuto Furukawa
A member of the Aoike Gathering and assistant to Mamoru Tougi. He’s a bold and unflappable as well as crafty, modern kind of man. Lacking the usual concern for his reputation and pride of yakuza members, he’s willing to work with anyone and everyone to achieve his goals.
Kazuyoshi Mifune
Tooru Kishiri
The head of the S Gathering’s third faction, the Mifune Group, and second lieutenant of the Aoike Gathering who’s also in the running to be next in line. He’s an old-school yakuza with an appetite for alcohol and a good time on par with his brute strength. Merciless and cruel but compassionate to his people, he’s a hero to his subordinates.
Meng Feng Da
Goro Ide
A suspicious thug who roams Kabukicho, committing fraud, fencing stolen goods, and cleverly navigating the lines between every faction from the yakuza to the Chinese gangs to the police. He’s also corrupt cop Sayuki Ugai’s pet informant.
Onda
Kazuki Nishizaki
Just your regular balding, middle-aged day laborer who gambles away his pay on horse or bike track races most days. With his easygoing smile, he’s pretty approachable.
The Crone
Megumi Nishikiori
The old woman who owns the hotel the protagonist lives in, working him like a dog. She’s a well-informed member of the Kabukicho underworld who has ties to the Aoike Gathering and knows about both the protagonist’s hit man side hustle and Yun’s gang member past.
“Me”
Ryo Sugisaki
A hit man who suffers from insomnia that renders him eternally sleep-deprived. He’s Japanese—and went by Takeo Muraki for a time—but operates under the Hong Konger identity of “Zeng Heixing” and has made a home for himself in one of the rooms in a hotel on the outskirts of Kabukicho. Normally, he spends his days working there apathetically and only kills anyone when a job comes in. After meeting Azami and getting the best sleep of his life, he can’t bring himself to let her go.

没想到是NO,THANK YOU!!!

Restless Sheep and the Lone Wolf is a title I'm struggling to say if I overall recommend or not. Overall, I'd slightly lean towards yes, but only if you can accept the occasional extreme content and its somewhat fast (and arguably rushed) storytelling.
Premise, Setting, and Themes
On paper, I quite like the premise of this visual novel, specifically taking place in Kabukicho (and not a renamed "Kamurocho" like in the Yakuza video game series) with mostly adult-age characters. The darker undertone was pretty nice to have, and the tone was mostly serious to match. The English subtitle is A Tale of Love and Cutthroat, and I think that mostly summarizes the themes of the major characters. Restless Sheep kind of goes into the backstories of why some people are killers in the real world, from more tragic backstories to generic “I am evil because killing is fun” to less-explained but more wholesome “kill to protect” kinds of deals. There is some degree of theming around whether there's actually morality in killing. For me, a good comparison is Muramasa by Nitroplus, which goes into a lot more detail on the subject (arguably too much, and a bit too preachy at times). In contrast, Restless Sheep kind of dips into this topic, but it's mostly just a few characters occasionally repeating some variation of “It doesn't matter who or why you kill. The fact that you kill means you are a killer.” It does make this story a little bit simplistic, but I liked that it still covers the topic with relative maturity without getting too preachy for the most part.
Interesting Ensemble Cast
For a 15-hour-ish story, there's a surprisingly decently interesting ensemble cast. I'd say the vast majority of supporting characters all have well-thought-out motivations for why they are in the city—why they are killers, or why they are in the yakuza, police force, or just dealing with the underworld in general. While they don't go super deep into the stories and developments, they do show enough to make me at least kind of interested in the characters, which once again helps that most of them are actually adult-aged. A few of the supporting characters are more interesting than the main duo if I had to be honest. Speaking of, the characters that get the most focus by far are the main character (with multiple fake names) and the main heroine Azami, who are fittingly the Restless Sheep and the Lone Wolf in the title, respectively. A lot of the VN works because of the really odd premise and relationship the two have, and how their relationship impacts their role with the many other supporting characters and advancing the story. “The main character not being able to sleep without killing people, but somehow sleeping even better when he has sex with a much more proactively murderous wolf in Azami (which causes her to fall in love with him)” is always an odd sentence to describe or even sell this game to people. But despite the super weird premise, it kind of works, especially considering ClockUp's silly premises in other previous titles like Euphoria, Maggot Baits, and Dead Days. Similar to the rest of the ensemble cast, neither of the main duo is particularly deep per se, but both of them get the most focus on their backstories and how it affects their lives in the present, with even a little bit of irony and humor in how the relationship works. Despite most of the relationship being Azami as a crazy fangirl clearly wanting to marry the MC, and the MC switching between being tsundere to her and legitimately being scared of her, it does make for at least a kind of interesting “love story.” Not super compelling or deep, but fun to watch. At its best, I consider Restless Sheep and the Lone Wolf like a rated-R action thriller movie turned into a visual novel with some of ClockUp's unique edgy flair. AKA just turn off your brain and watch some of the fun events and character interactions play out, and the story accomplishes this type of entertainment decently well.
A Bit Too Much Edge
Sadly, many flaws prevent me from liking it consistently, and unfortunately a lot comes down to ClockUp's edgy flair. Even excluding the serial killer aspect, some people could be uncomfortable with the main character being almost 40 years old and Azami “probably” (but not guaranteed) 18 years old. But even overlooking the age-gap, ClockUp is a nukige developer at heart, so even in one of their most plot-heavy titles, there are way more H-scenes than necessary. If the H scenes were just occasional reminders of how the MC needs Azami to sleep without killing, it'd be silly but plot-relevant. Unfortunately, ClockUp leans hard into the darker side even in this VN: (g)rape, ugly bastard, PDphillia, violence, scat (with on/off filter), and arguably the worst, dismemberment. There's also a filter for gore, but only tones it down, doesn't fully remove it. I'm all for freedom of expression and explicit sex in VNs, but these forced insertions into serious backstories or plot moments make me facepalm. Maybe showing one or two to prove the darkness of the setting could work, but there are too many, most clearly just for shock value. This is especially true with the true route's villain, who goes from weird but harmless to obnoxiously edgy out of nowhere with barely any explanation.
Structure and Presentation
I like the route structure in theory, but in practice it's too rushed. The common route does a decent job introducing characters, factions, how the main two meet, and their antagonists. The two non-true routes focus on MC or Azami, focusing on one of their backstories paired with fitting antagonists, but they're short (1-2 hours tops), and have really similar cliffhanger endings. The true route in theory expands on what you learned in the first two routes, attempting a way to have all the supporting characters be relevant. Sadly this attempt just feels forced, and the true route still plays favorites of who gets to be relevant longer. The only real highlight of the true route is the final battle, fitting the themes from the VN, with a kinda interesting final choice. However, I wish they'd committed to one ending. All 3 have their own charms but if they combined aspects of all of them into 1, it could have been a great ending, instead of a choice between 3 short decent ones. One final minor issue is inconsistent visuals, something that seems to be common in Clockup VNs. The grainy redrawn real-life backgrounds are unique, but come at the expense of how often they show sprites or other visuals. Important fight or emotional scenes often lack CGs (mostly saved for the two mains), with most CGs saved for H scenes.
Overall Recommend… But Only For a Specific Target Audience
This leaves me in a pickle on both how I feel about Restless Sheep and whether to recommend it to people. I only picked it up because it's the only ClockUp title with an interesting-enough premise for me to read despite the unnecessary edgy scenes. And for the most part, it WAS interesting. If you like unique dark stories with interesting morally grey characters to match, and don't mind (or want) dark shock value surprises, I recommend this title. If dark fetishy H-scenes and gore gross you out too much, do NOT pick up this VN. On a personal level, I overall kinda sorta liked Restless Sheep & The Lone Wolf but not nearly as I wish I could have.
"There is no telling what manner of grotesque darkness brews in the underbelly of the state. After all, authority is, at its essence, violence enacted in the name of the regime."
