I heard some really good things about this game. Looking at screenshots, the pixel art looks amazing. The soundtrack is even great, I love looking at and listening to this game. The big problem is how much of a chore it feels like to play. There are entirely way too many enemies that move so quickly, you can't even hit them half the time. You need a powered up weapon if you plan on taking many of them out the first time you see them as they fly on and off the screen. The huge problem with this is how much is going on the screen and how much platforming you have. The game is incredibly punishing in the sense that you will be jumping back and forth on the same platform to avoid enemies since you can't kill them quickly enough. If you're lucky, you might be able to hit them a couple times as they fly across the screen way too quickly to aim, you mostly spam in their general direction. You go hit? Too bad, the knock back will push you off the tiny platform you have to wait to rise and you start your journey through the room all over again. I've had that happen entirely way too many times from enemies that come at you so quickly from an angle that you can't even aim at that I got so frustrated I just quit. If I had a chance at killing these enemies, fine, I'd deal with them that way. But since you can only aim in 8 directions, you better hope an enemy is coming from one in order to hit them. Many of them can home attacks in you but you can't do it back to them. It's just needlessly difficult. Oddly enough, the first boss is really big so it's easy to hit. The boss fight was actually fun while the whole journey to the boss felt like a test of patience rather than skill. Furthermore, if you die, you lose all your gear and have to return with just your starter gun from the last save point. Was it a pain to reach that far before you died? Of course it was! Well guess what? Now you get to do it again with even worse gear than before and hope you don't die along the way. Don't let the great art style fool you. The game looks great with a great soundtrack, but playing it is just not fun.
Starts off like a Contra-style Run N' Gun shooter but it quickly transforms into something more of a Metroidvania, which I wasn't expecting. I got a kick out of realizing that, instead of playing as Tom Cruise's character from the terrible movie this is supposedly adapting, you're just some random soldier dude that works for an organization that fights monsters. Amazing. The game itself is pretty solid, though nothing ground-breaking if you've played this style of game before.
x-- 7/10 --x I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It's extremely challenging, but once you get upgrades it can get easier.
Amazing! It caught me off guard how well designed this game is. A must play.
