Great follow up to Tangle Tower. The game feels quite a bit meatier than the previous game too, but that's possibly just because I'm taking my time. Either way, I don't think fans of the previous two Grimoire games will have anything to complain about here. Puzzles could have been a bit trickier, but the actual story had a number of surprising turns I did not see coming, which to me is a sign of a good mystery, especially because it all feels quite satisfying in the end. My only real complaint is that the game ends at some point and I can't have more of Sally's and Grimoires banter :(
I stumbled across someone doing a playthrough of Tangle Tower a few years ago and became obsessed with the story and world building but especially the characters. I remember wishing there was even more content but there was no sign of anything else new on the horizon, and all I could do was hope that if we got a game after that it'd be just as amazing as Tangle Tower. When Mermaid Mask was announced I felt an excitement that I truthfully haven't felt for many games in the last while and I was practically climbing the walls while I waited for the release date to inch closer. I even convinced (forced) a friend to play through the entire series of Detective Grimoire games in the lead up to the release. And then the game came out and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Between work and such it took us 2 days to play through totally but we were both enthralled, theorizing throughout and just having a great time. The art is just as beautiful as it was in Tangle Tower with just as much character and charm and terror mixed throughout. Every person was unique and memorable and we found ourselves proclaiming a favourite suspect before pivoting to someone else because they all have their standout moments. The story is a bit different compared to Secret of the Swamp and Tangle Tower but I actually love that it strays a little in a different direction and thus opens up more aspects of their world and more mysteries that might just stay mysteries. Sorry for rambling, many thoughts have been had about this game. 10/10 I wanna kiss Grimoire so bad he's so silly
SBF Games, you have done it again. Constantly raising the bar for us all, and doing it flawlessly. I'd like to say I'm surprised but I know who you are. I expected this game to be good, but it surpassed even Tangle Tower. Incredible art, voice acting performances that sucked me into that world and were overflowing with charm (shout out to the killer, that performance at the end was art, my man, it was like I was watching this happen at a theater). Everything is exaggerated, theatrical, dramatic, and whimsical, and it has this atmosphere that, as a fan of mystery fiction, I yearn for. Wacky characters full of hidden depths trapped in a setting straight out of a horror story.
Yes they did it! A few years after the great Tangle Tower, SFB Games manage to double down and make the fourth Detective Grimoire installment another great detective game! It's great to see those game evolve so much between each episode. Even though The Mermaid Mask juste looks from afar like "The successor to Tangle Tower", lots of subtle details have been added once again to make it even more nicer to play. Among which, the full modelisation in 3D of all clues, whuch definitely helps fo fully fledge out the "detective vibe". Art is there, music is there, I love how the story and characters manage to feel so unique and whimsy at the same time, without looking in any way like something that's been done before on any previous installment. It was a great to havethe opportunity to dwelve again into a Grimoire and Sally adventure, and have a new glimpse at the universe surrounding them. If SFB Games wanna try their luck at yet another installment, I will be up for it, as it seems the world has still so much to offer. Definitely a series that does not pale in comparison, and can stand proudly amongst the Ace Attorney and Golden Idol series to just name my favourites.
As a big fan of Tangle Tower, I was really excited to play The Mermaid Mask, and it did not disappoint. Everything about this game - the story, atmosphere, voice acting, animations, artwork, music - is on point. The puzzles are engaging and some a little challenging, but very fun to do! And the humor is excellent. Plus, I feel like this game leaned more into the creepiness, which I loved. They say how hard it is to make a sequel to a beloved game, and that they only hope it stands up to the original. And the thing is, I think they more than accomplished it! This feels like an incredible sequel that only builds on what was given to us in Tangle Tower, if not made to be even better. I mean, my playtime in this game is pretty much double what it took to 100% Tangle Tower. Plus, the story is so good! I was hooked until the very end, and everything also pieced together like a perfect puzzle. I am very impressed and can see myself playing it again later. I'm really hoping SFB makes more games in this series so we can continue to get cozy, fun, and highly atmospheric murder mysteries!
No spoilers here. I just beat it. Nothing went as I predicted it would, and yet the ending didn't feel like it came out of nowhere. Characters amazing, as always. Writing just as funny as ever. Art, both background and character, was stunning. Music was gripping, just like the first game. Every aspect of this game was crafted with love and care.
A Humorous and Relaxing Detective Game
Wonderful diverse cast of characters and voice acting, a lovely cartoony art style, a bucketload of charm, and wonderful duo-protagonists, discussing everything as we go along. This is not the kind of game that dominates your steam replay, but it can contest for one of the best entertainment-per-hour, if you enjoy the feel of point and click adventure games. This is my first entry into the series, as I bought it due to keeping an eye on upcoming games that might fit my interests, and the style plus being on a submarine hooked me in. The game’s quality ensures that I will check out the previous titles, but it is not needed to follow any of the plot. I was only reminded of it because they came with the kind of lines that either hinted at previous adventures or a “noodle incident” sort of situation. (For those that do not know, “noodle incident” is a meaningful incident in the past that is never fully explained, and their context only shown by the way characters react to its mention.) Honestly, I adore most about this, as it strikes a lovely comedic tone through the eccentrics cast and banter, while still incorporating serious elements and a surprise ending. The protagonists came off as smart, at least to me, as they gathered all the evidence before jumping to conclusions. Along with the game giving overall hints, if you are unsure where to go to progress. Any puzzles not dealing with detective mystery could also be solved with logic on the thing itself rather than wondering if you needed to pick up objects from other places first. Still early in the year, but this is deservingly one of the gems of 2026 for me.
A splendid use of female property and labour: fully funding one incel loser’s search for Mermaid Mummy and his revenge on the man who got the woman, the adventure and the legend. The inn came from Felicia. The deeds came from Felicia. The key came from Felicia. The submarine came from Sinthia’s mother. Gripp's magnificent personal contribution appears to consist of some engineering, fraud, murder, and a heroic quantity of self-pity. You guessed it: he ends up with the mummy, as the one man in all humanity apparently worthy of being chosen, plus some of the most lavish scenes this game’s scale can provide, lovingly supplied by his developer bros. It is genuinely impossible to imagine who could Gripp possibly be a projection of? There are simply no clues. Very subtle. Over a decade ago, the same creator made a mermaid-and-cauldron comic where the women were allowed to speak, act, make decisions and help one another. Apparently artistic development has since transformed them into dead girlfriends, stolen property, emotional support staff and enormous silent prizes for miserable men. Progress, one supposes. Most of the characters—and, apparently, the entire very white creative team behind them—eventually agree that the Black girl is the one person who simply cannot be allowed to keep her power. This is all for her own good, naturally. A touching little exercise in community-led disenfranchisement. The developers also periodically remind us how difficult the whole thing was to make, as if producing a paid commercial product were a personal favour to the audience. One might have assumed the purchase price covered the labour. Apparently the customer was also expected to provide emotional support. Perhaps the creators should return to a few private playthroughs of Indiana Jones and Mafia, where they can imagine themselves as the alpha in peace and stop asking women to finance, mother, inspire, console and spiritually reward every male crisis. Or, better yet, simply stop making the next one. Anyway, lovely art, excellent voice acting, charming puzzles. Narratively, it feels like someone accidentally left his private Chad grievance journal in the game files.
