💎INDIE GEM💎
Having played the first two games on Steam and enjoyed them a lot (also the original Flash game back in the day), I find this game exceeds them. Detective Grimoire is back with another case to solve. He received a letter about the murder of Captain Magnus Mortuga in his own submarine. He and his partner Sally arrived at the seemingly abandoned fishing town, waiting for their contact, having stayed all night in the wretched down inn. Grimoire decided to search the town, only to find the submarine where the murder had occurred. Hopping in, they started searching the rooms, interviewing the suspects, and gathering all the information needed about their victim. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767458160 The story is extremely well written; the dialogue, the characters' interactions, and the way things unfolded were out of this world. The gameplay is like the previous one; you roam around the submarine, checking rooms, interacting with almost everything, checking all items and collecting them as evidence, which you can later use to ask the suspects about them. You don't have to keep notes aside to remember everything. The developer has kept everything organised, and you can access everything you've discussed with the suspects under each item, including what they said about each other. It does make the deduction section easy at times; however, I found a couple of them challenging. The puzzles are fun and different from the common ones, and while there is no skip option, none of them was frustrating. If you fail to solve them, the characters will give you a hint on how to solve them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767458127 The voice acting is top-notch! They captured each character's personality perfectly, making them all likeable. I didn't dislike any of them, and when I learned in the credits that one voice actor played two totally different characters, it made me appreciate their work so much more. The soundtracks are outstanding. I do wish we had an option to download them; they were so good, and each character theme is fitting! The artwork is immaculate; the character design, room details, and animations are phenomenal! I even loved the concept art they provided after you finished the game, and the artist's insight made my heart swell. Just like in the previous game, I appreciated the time and love everyone poured into this game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767012211 Pros: +Immaculate artwork and locations. +Well-written murder mystery story. +Interesting characters and perfectly captured their different personality. +Fun and great soundtracks. +Useful notes and list of items to help you with your investigation. +Original puzzles. +Great animation and character design. +Fast travel map. +Mystery/detective style. +Outstanding voice-over. Cons: -You can't skip puzzles. I can't recommend this game enough; it ticks the boxes in every aspect. I wish there were more games like this, and I can't wait for a new Detective Grimoire adventure. Endlessly charming, stylistic and incredible art, impeccable voice acting and a great point-and-click detective game with minor puzzles and SO. MUCH. DIALOGUE. Which never feels like a slog because of aforementioned great qualities. These are all things that the Detective Grimoire games have always had. The sequel does not shy away from being absolutely gorgeous, being funny with its duo of detectives, being emotional gripping with its suspects, and with its mysteries being captivating to explore and understand. Now with 3D models and a slightly longer game time (at around 10 hours). And so the question is: Does it improve upon the very obvious shortcoming of its predecessor, and for that matter, is it even necessary to play it, Tangle Tower, if it is? The answer is that it is absolutely better than Tangle Tower by a long shot, yet you still must play Tangle Tower before it. There are certain moments in this game that get your eyes wide open as it calls back to things in Tangle Tower that you simply can't understand nor enjoy without knowing. They aren't necessary per se to enjoy The Mermaid Mask, but you will lose a decent bit of emotional understanding without experiencing all the additional information from Tangle Tower. As for the improvements, this game has by far the best finale of all the Detective Grimoire games, which was the sticking point of Tangle Tower. The build up to its story is well-done, and it absolutely nails the climax too. Its culprit is by far the most well-executed of the three, and that's including Secret of the Swamp too, and the crime and motive definitely makes the most sense too. It's also reasonably solvable before the final act, although you wouldn't be able to figure out all of its mysteries so easily either, while also still resolving pretty much every single thing in the game. Aside from the lingering mystery beneath it all of course. There's room for another sequel here, but time will tell if SFB Games will make it. I can see that the Grimoire games take a LOT of effort, but by god I would be so happy to see the conclusion of this mysterious throughline building through them. A perfect Detective Grimoire game I would say.
I'm no master detective. I just like seeing what each dialogue option says.
This game and Tangle Tower...
They both have great way with words. Like each sentence spoken, be it in conversation or item description everything is done with feels and outstanding quality. They can read me milk bottle plaquette and I would be impressed. To have all voice actors put life into their characters, animators and sound designers creating such synch is just insanity to me. Then soundtrack starts and it turns into magic again. You may not like riddle/talk type of games but you have to appreciate the world they are creating and the means they use to achieve their goals. Soul is a thing that is really hard to find in modern games.
It's clear from the overwhelmingly positive reviews the game already has that it is, in fact, a banger. I just wanted to add my own little bit of appreciation. So far, I've loved Crow Country, Detective Grimoire, Tangle Tower - and now, I'm glad to add The Mermaid Mask to the list of SFB Games that rule. The Mermaid Mask is well crafted. Everything from character designs, voice acting, animation, easter eggs, and soundtrack to writing is made with so much love and care for the final game. I love the submarine setting, and I think the game had the perfect group of eccentric strangers to make you fall in love with the Mortuga Submarine and its residents. If you love puzzle games, detective games, or maybe I should say- good games in general, then please try out The Mermaid Mask. It is a charming adventure that will take you around 13 (haha scary number) hours. And each hour is full of beautiful art, lovely writing, great sound, and delicious humor. Play The Mermaid Mask!
Utterly fantastic. Probably the best Detective Grimoire game yet Well written, consistently funny All the characters are unique and fleshed out with great voice acting across the board Most of the puzzles are completely original and fun with like 1 that i didnt really enjoy(typewriter puzzle) but most were fun to solve The setting, music, art, animations, for the characters are really well done and really immerse you in the game The core mystery is fun to solve and all the characters involvement in said mystery Get this if you like detective/puzzle games it is well worth your time Edit: getting all the achievements isn't TOO terrible, most of them you will get by just interacting with everything, but there are a couple MISSABLES so I would definitely look those up when you play this game, so you don't miss them and have to replay the entire game again. theres like 3 to look for and are not hard to achieve you just have to know when they are.
