Loved it! Just a few puzzle moments that felt very unclear, otherwise well executed and just the right difficulty. Very much in the spirit and style of Rusty Lake. Would love to see more from the developer, paid content also of course!
Here is another great game developed by Ryan Zollinger. If you liked The Sink Gods (or are a fan of the Rusty Lake games) you will love this. It is chock full of puzzles with much more content. Using hand drawn art and point-and-click mechanics, an adventure story unfolds as you make your way to, and later attempt to escape, the temple of the great deer. There is something sinister afoot inside those walls. Can you get out or will you fall victim to the plot? Yes, there are two endings. Wink-wink.

This game was so much better than I expected it to be! The difficulty level was perfect - some tricky puzzles but mostly solvable with a bit of thought or lateral thinking. Some of the puzzles were genuinely novel and inventive, something that's hard to find in point and click games these days (I especially liked the ballerina puzzle). Most of the puzzles were fair and had rational solutions (and didn't, e.g. require hours of thought for you to only realise you didn't click the right corner of the rug or things like that). A few of the puzzle solutions felt arbitrary, but I think you get a bit of that in almost all escape games like this. The flow of the game worked well, the story made sense and was engaging. The art style was simple enough that you didn't get distracted by loads of un-interactable objects, which I liked. It's a bit janky around the edges as you'd expect from a small indie game, but I actually found this kinda charming. And ofc its aesthetically mimicking rusty lake. Only major thing I disliked was the ending, which felt a bit rushed, and repetitive when I couldn't get the timing aspect of it right. Imma definitely be following the developer on this to see what they make next :)
From the developers of The Sink Gods, Great Deer is full of not too difficult puzzles, the real challenge is figuring out how to get to the next puzzle. Really enjoyed playing it and will play it again when achievements are unlocked.
Awesome game! Small puzzle games like these are awesome. Especially when they are free!
Really fun game. Glad to see more from this developer. My only annoyance is that a couple puzzles felt a bit under explained and difficult. Much longer and tougher than The Sink Gods and definitely worth the time. Took me about 2 hours.
Very satisfactory puzzle game along the lines of Rusty Lake escape room puzzles. It's intuitive to solve even if the controls are a little janky at times. Basically if you're stuck, just observe what is readily available around you. Keep an eye out for what's written on book pages. The window puzzles are, for the most part, self-contained. The ending level is timed, but once you know the steps, it's possible to solve within the time frame even if you have anxiety-freeze like I do. (If anything, I wish the ending monologue was skippable because having to redo the level and being forced to sit through that each time was a draaaag.) If you like escape room puzzles, and you're okay with a touch of horror, this is a neat little game for you. Possibly a bit too short for my taste, considering the price, but it scratched an itch I was having waiting for more Rusty Lake games.
Map puzzle made no sense, and was unable to progress any further in the game. Rating: 1/10

To start, the game is free! 😲 I feel I should've paid at least $.99 cents for it, maybe even more. Even if it's a short one, it completely deserved and justifiable. Before jumping in, I wanted to get a sense of how long the gameplay would be, so I started looking at some (positive) reviews. I noticed many mentioned it had similarities to the Rusty Lake series. Rusty Lake is my favorite P+C series. This was a no brainer, playtime didn't matter. The reviews weren't wrong. It's in the same vein as Rusty Lake; very likely they were inspired by them. It's not quite imitating it, but I'd say- it could become its own style within the P+C genre (if it hasn't already and I just haven't noticed). Visually it has a similar art style but not quite the same. It's a hand-drawn surreal style yet smooth and polished. It includes many creative and enjoyable puzzles that vary in difficulty. I got stuck a few times but was able to figure it out eventually. Except for one 😖 I had to look it up. As expected, it uses basic P+C controls. When it comes to the story, I wish it had been fleshed out more. It's there but it feels glossed over. There's clear potential to expand the story. The narrative is told by letters left for you that give some background information, atmospheric storytelling and towards the end some actual dialogue. I wish it had been more elaborate. Everything else I really loved and enjoyed. I highly recommend it. I'll be checking out their other games too!
