The goal of The First Mine is to mine as much gold as possible to achieve a high score at the end. There are different game sizes and difficulty levels to choose from, as well as several characters with unique traits for varied gameplay.
Each round you have to cleverly place and group a new random resource tile and upgrade your existing tiles as needed. Placing a new tile end the current round, mine gold in your mine and collect resources like wood, stone, wheat and fish.

To mine gold, you need people in your villages. To keep them, you need to provide enough wheat and fish each round. More people and a higher level increases the amount of gold produced per round. You need wood and stone to upgrade the level.
In order to increase your yield per round, you can observe different requirements and tasks when placing resource tiles. In addition, there are random game events like trade, raids or natural disasters that can influence the game in a positive or negative way.

I got this game for free early via Keymailer. I think its a decent little puzzle game. I play Dorfromantik quite frequently when I'm just taking a break from more in depth gameplay. This is a good substitute that is fairly similar. It has a few things that i think improve upon that style of tile puzzle builder game. You can upgrade tiles to get more resources to improve the mine and towns. It's a small add on but I missed it jumping straight into the game. I would suggest starting with the tutorial first on this game. Some of the tiles have a negative effect on other tiles while the bonus for placement really pushes you to plan out and pay attention to the next tiles you get more than other games like this. I haven't had a ton of time to play it yet, but I will definitely dive back into it soon.
Honestly, it's a fun single player board game esque title. But instead of playing against opponents in real time, you need to balance your resources, citizens and tiles to defeat your opponents on the leader board. Currently ranked 4th, but I feel like I can do better! Great job Stefan, what a fun game.

I have never played Carcassone, but I was immediately told this is similar to it. So, if you know that game, you'll probably find yourself at home with this title. The First Mine feels a lot like a resource builder and matching game, with some foresight required in your part while balancing the amounts of undos, previews, and shuffles you have on hand. Ideally, you want to pause and consider your next move. Do I have the patience for that? Hell no! But, I still enjoyed the game when I took chances and didn't think too heavily on the achievements. As a puzzle game, this should win an award. It's structured very well with resource management and allocation of funds to really make you consider where each piece serves your mining community. I do wish there was a way to make the grids more aesthetically pleasing, or if there were power-ups or similar to allow you to place tiles without having them linking next to previously laid tiles, or even allow you to turn tiles a different way if you mess up. However, those are not options so you have to treat this like a rogue game where you either succeed or you don't. Overall impression is that the game is fun, interesting and definitely worth being in my collection.
It's a great little game that focusses on one game mode. So don't expect hundreds of hours of gameplay. But it's one of those little puzzle games that I'm likely to fire up every now and then, and it is definitely worth the few bucks it costs.
It just did not click for me. There must be better ways to indicate where to place tiles. Also, look to other games when it comes to friendliness to new players.
