The Death of Erin Myers

It's really difficult to pull off a game about a character who is as profoundly hard to like as the adult Erin; she's paranoid, she'll steal from crime scenes and coworkers or mildly poison people to get what she needs. Also, she's just kind of uncharitable and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in her narration. Coupled with the sometimes pixel-hunty puzzles and Erin's nitpicky requirements, I spent a not insignificant part of this going "GOD, ERIN, IT'S A PENCIL, JUST MAKE IT WORK". I still feel like the game mostly pulls it off - the "unlikable protagonist" part, I mean. It helps that we start with a (somewhat heavy-handed) memory of her childhood, which gives context to the whole miserable rest of her; get this girl off the force and into some therapy. I think she'd be terrifying on SSRIs, but probably she'd also be happier. Gameplay-wise - this is a short one, and the puzzles aren't super complicated except when they feel a bit too specific/pixel hunt-y, but I had a good time. Everything, including the bleak visuals, feels soaked through with Erin's perspective, which helps bring it together for me. The price feels reasonable for what you get. I also like that the game jumps back and forth in time. Unlike games that give you more agency in terms of choice while still letting you move around the timeline (here's looking at you, Beyond: Two Souls), here the jumping ends up underlining that what's coming in inevitable. You're playing as Erin, but in a way I felt like Erin's long-out-of-touch childhood friend, sitting next to her and screaming at all her bad choices, like. GIRL!!! WHY DO YOU HAVE A GUN??? Also, I may have missed this if there was one, but I think it might be good to have some kind of [spoiler]suicide tag on this. For plot reasons, I can understand why it isn't part of the mature content description on steam, or why it doesn't come before we see that final note. I just thought it was weird that it wasn't given a "here's help" notice at the end, which is standard at least in other mediums. [/spoilers] I still don't entirely know how I feel about the end. I suppose this is a bit of a weaker recommendation, but you probably know from looking at it if this is a game you'll enjoy or not.

No entiendo las opiniones que dicen que buena atmósfera, qué trágica muerte, etc. Pero si no dura nada (1 hora a lo sumo) y nada tiene sentido. Piensas que estás investigando la muerte de alguien pero no, la historia no va a ninguna parte, los personajes que salen no cuentan. This is a short little game with pretty easy progression for a point and click. (I only had to look up a walk through once.) It also tells a decent story, and one that I can personally relate to. It is best to go into this game blind, and experience it as it happens. I will however warn against anyone who is sensitive to childhood abuse as topic before playing, as it has a large role in the story. I recommend the game otherwise, especially if you are not very familiar with what abuse can do to a victim. This is not a subtle as a lot of cases of abuse are, but I applaud the game for exploring what it can do to a survivor. Spoilers ahead: The trouble that the MC has in this game is related to childhood trauma and an inability to recover. Instead of working through the toxic behaviors that were put up to survive her childhood, they compounded it and hid behind their job as a means to cope. This is a story about how poorly trauma can be handled and what it can do to a person if they feel they have the means to act upon it. I mentioned in the opening that I have personal experience with abuse, though not quite to the degree that the MC here did. Even still, it left a mark on me, and it has taken me over a decade to work through and unlearn the behaviors I had to survive my abuse. To this day, I still have certain triggers that are still a problem, and are like mental barriers. But the first step to recovery is to recognize that those triggers exist for a reason, and that they may be irrational in situations that do not involve a parent. Childhood abuse is difficult to work through, as there isn't a self before it to look back to as a goal. And on that front, I feel like this game does address that quite well. If a person is not able to grow, to be better than their abuser and doubles down on their toxicity it makes recovery very hard. The MC sees these possibilities for the future, but only in a dream, and once it is too late. I would love to see more from this developer in the future.

Fun and short point and click game

For only $1.99, I thought the Dev gave a very nicely done adventure game w/ a decent story and nice ambiance. There were some dark topics not too far off the realm of what you may see in the news. A like a story that pieces together an individual, meaning what circumstances lead to the characters thought process, actions, feelings, etc. over their lifetime. I really enjoyed playing this and could only imagine turning this into a choice based scenario that could affect the final outcome of the game. Would I recommend this? The easy answer is yes. Do I look forward to more of these short series? Again, yes.

The Death of Erin Myers is a nice little point & click game you can finish in under 2 hours. It's following Erin Myers as she experiences different situations in her life. The puzzles aren't too difficult, and you are never required to venture far to complete them. I went in blind and finished the game in 1h 45m. I was missing some voice acting but even without, it's a nice little game, perfect for when you feel like something quick and satisfying. Nice, short point & click mystery. Captivating story. Really enjoyed it! 2 hours for 100%. (All missable, so use a guide.)
