It's early 2013, and because there's no viable space for adventure games in the digital marketplace, we have The Cave: an awkward marriage between classic PC adventures and the puzzle-platformer. This Double Fine/Ron Gilbert collaboration actually reminds me of later LucasArts releases like Grim Fandango and Escape from Monkey Island, in that a much better game ends up getting buried by an interface designed to appeal to modern tastes. In this case, the side-scrolling format just ends up adding a whole bunch of shoe leather to what could have been a much tighter experience; most of your time in The Cave is spent steering three characters around too-large levels just to get them to do something that otherwise would have taken a few mouse-clicks. This mix of genres feels genuinely novel at first, but it definitely wears on you by the time you get to the end of your first playthrough. Ideally, you're supposed to reach the end a few times to see each of the seven characters' stories play out in full—you can only select three per playthrough—but any motivation will fizzle out once you realize what you're in for. (Namely, playing the same long, mandatory segments all over again.) Thankfully Ron Gilbert was able to go right back to making adventure games after this, and The Cave remains a failed experiment in adventure gaming geared towards the 360 crowd.
