The WWI story where your goal isn’t to kill, but to survive. In the still trenches, three soldiers learn the harsh truth of war: reckless missions, digging trenches, collecting dog tags and ghostly whispers in the dark. Home before the leaves fall, they thought.

Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1.43/day in the week to Aug 25 → 3/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
About
THE CARIBOU TRAIL - Home before the leaves fall, they thought.
Far from home, Fisher leaves his quiet harbor town in Newfoundland to join the British war effort with his friends. They expect a short-lived adventure full of tales to bring back home.
What awaits them is not glory, but dirt, loss… and a touch of madness. The quiet gestures that hold a regiment together, the impossible choices, the weight of survival and... well, dubious stews no one back home would dare to call edible.
The Caribou Trail is a visceral, first-person narrative experience about a band of friends sent on some of the most unlikely missions of the Great War.
Inspired by real testimonies, The Caribou Trail blends history with fiction to portray a rarely explored front of WWI: Gallipoli, from the landing to the final evacuation.
Cut through barbed wire in no man’s land on a desperate reconnaissance mission, silence a sniper holding the line, and make noise during a chaotic evacuation. Each step is experienced through your own eyes.
Yet this is not about winning the war, it’s about enduring it. Explore the back lines, feel the weight of anticipation, stumble through the trenches, reclaim the dog tags of fallen comrades, and share stories with those who still have the strength to speak. Sit by the fire, share ghostly tales (that may or may not be true), and find warmth around the campfire.
When the time comes, you may choose to pull the trigger… or not. Every gesture brings you closer to the men who laugh beside you… and fall before you.
There is no score. No kill count. Only resilience, fleeting friendship, and the fragile hope of making it home.
War may take everything, but it also builds bonds.
You and your companions are not hardened soldiers, but ordinary men: fishermen, dreamers, storytellers; cooking fish’n’brews in battered pots, laughing at bad jokes, and clinging to one another when silence grows too heavy.
In the chaos, these small rituals become lifelines - reminders of who you are, and of who's fighting alongside you. What begins as survival becomes brotherhood, etched into memory long after the guns fall silent.
Gordon - Insufferable and lovable. Always the center of attention. He'll crack a joke or roast you at the worst moment possible, but he'll be there for you no matter what.
Lonnie - A whimsical, dreamy kid who doesn't belong, but still strives to do his best. What he lacks in military prowess, he compensates with his warmth and spirit. He'll even share a good spooky story or two to change the mood…
Fisher - You are the middle brother, constantly defusing (or participating in) Gordo and Lon's bickering. In the face of the war's horrors, you define Fisher's willingness to see things as they are, or instead delve into superstitious escapism.
These are the faces you will remember long after Gallipoli.
When night falls, the line between reality and imagination blurs.
Are the shadows in the trenches just tricks of the firelight, or spirits drawn to the living? In The Caribou Trail, folklore and psychological horror intertwine, echoing how soldiers made sense of a world that no longer did.
What you find may not change history, but it might change you.

The Caribou Trail is a walking sim set against a backdrop of the First World War. Game was developed by a Canadian studio, and it tells a story of the early days of a Canadian Newfoundland regiment and their first deployment. I get the impression that it is a kind of tribute to them and to all forgotten soldiers from forgotten battles of the First World War. Positive – storyline is good, but to be honest, that’s not due to the developers, as they’re simply retelling a true story. Soundtrack, sound effects, and sound design are of the highest quality. Developers have really gone to great lengths to make players feel as though they are actually there at that time. They’ve also included a wealth of little-known facts about the First World War and the history of the Newfoundland Regiment. Characters of our companions and other soldiers are also well-developed. They’re realistic – one is an incorrigible optimist, another a cynic; one tries to drown out his fear with conversation, whilst yet another turns to alcohol. This is reality, not some lofty war film that distorts facts ‘for the greater good’. Neutral – story seems to cut off halfway through. Game doesn’t give us the chance to find out how our characters’ stories end or what becomes of them after the war. Negative - game covers only a single chapter of the regiment’s entire history. After the Battle of Gallipoli, soldiers went to France, where they took part in several important battles, and in 1918 they crossed the River Rhine. Furthermore, names on the gravestones are repeating themselves – developers created a database that was too small, whereas each soldier should have their own personalized name. Would I recommend it? Yes. It’s a good war story without any unnecessary pathos or romanticization of war. Boredom and routine are interspersed with moments that are either gripping or sad. And the whole thing simply makes sense. It’s a shame the developers limited themselves to Gallipoli, instead of following the story through the entire wartime route of the ‘Caribou’. ✅

Semi-realistic art style using fairly low-poly 3D graphics. Art style is similar to their previous game (Two Falls) as well as Firewatch.
Soundtrack consists of orchestral music inspired by war films, interwoven with Newfoundland folk music. It was composed by Nicolas Des Alliers.
Soundscape is realistic. Sounds are just as you would expect to hear on a battlefield – roar of cannons, sound of machine guns, screams of the wounded, and so on. It has been rendered faithfully and without any unnecessary embellishments.
Superb voice acting. All the voice actors are perfectly suited to their characters and have accents and dialects that match their backgrounds.
Story recounts real events as well as the pivotal moments during this regiment's deployment at Gallipoli. Specific historical events are interwoven with typical trench life - this is both a deliberate narrative device and a reflection of reality, as World War I differed greatly from how we imagine it today.
Our companions are believable and authentic. I know they didn't actually exist, but I get the impression that the developers designed them to be an amalgamation of specific archetypes and behaviors. Each of them represents a specific type of person and a certain, characteristical motivation.
Final sequence is something else entirely. It’s like the culmination of all feelings and emotions that have been building up inside MC since the start of this campaign. What he’s been through, what he’s lost, what he’s done – all mixed up with something that could be described as shell shock. I have to admit, it really makes an impression.
Our inventory and journal were put together quite creatively, as they took on the form and standard typical for a soldier’s gear from that period.
A lot of lesser-known lore and history from the World War I era. Most of it revolves around the Newfoundland Regiment.
Price/length ratio is well balanced.
Achievements are easy to obtain and connected to the story.
😐

I don't think someone whose foot got caught in barbed wire just a moment earlier would be able to move smoothly and quickly after just a few minutes... They should have handled that better.
We know where the protagonist, his mates and the rest of their unit ended up after Gallipoli, but developers didn't reveal what happened to them afterward.
❌

Names on the graves are repeating themselves. Developers could and should have taken the time to make each one unique.
Even though we see quite a few dead bodies in the game, I get the impression that it’s all been heavily toned down for the audience’s sake. What do I mean? Corpses look as if they were lying in a morgue rather than in no man’s land between two lines of trenches.
It's a shame that the game focuses only on Gallipoli, because “Caribou Trail” lasted until the end of World War I, and its final battles took place as part of the Hundred Days Offensive.
As a history lover its a great game that really shows the good and the bad. Slow at times but for the price its well worth it
One of the most beautiful games I have ever played, it is worth your time
I can quite happily say this is completely worth the price and time it advertises, although the cooking stages are sometimes repetitive you do always get a meaningful and deep story in between from Lonnie and Gordon. I've only had the game for 3 days and completed it but I can already see myself coming back because there always seemed like there was more to do. My final point is the story and it does not disappoint, I wont spoil anything because the entire experience is a lot better like that but the entire final 2 missions are some of the greatest experiences I have had with an indie game for a very very long time. This game can no doubt, 100% be counted as one of my favourite indie games this year but also one of my favourite WW1 games OF ALL TIME. I hope this helps you and if you want a Historical story with meaningful characters and a story that actually moves you, get The Caribou Trail and I wish you have as great a time as I did, thanks for reading
not a long game by any means, but a good one that really gets you when you least expect it, i really hope to see more games like this about WW1 in the future, this game should be an example to other studios about how to make games centered around the tragedies of war and how to turn it into a beautiful story
Short, but very fun game with a lot of heart. Worth the playthrough.
