Bookwalker is one of those games that break my heart to give a thumbs down. It is not a trash game and it's not broken, but it's also so uninteresting and bland that I cannot in good conscience give it a good rating. Long story short, Bookwalker is a point-and-click game disguised of what else you want, with a veneer of choices matter but that actually doesn't, and with a minimal but intrusive addition of J-RPG style combat. Between chapters you'll have to navigate some boring and uninteresting walking sim segment to advance the meta story. The main gameplay loop is: waste some time doing the same repetitive task six times, then jump onto a book where you'll be pixel hunting and exhausting all the dialogue trees and chasing resources to create tools required for progression, rinse and repeat. Two or three times per chapter the game will throw you some J-RPG battles where you slowly improve your skills between chapters and which require little to no thinking. No single system in the game is awful, but also none of them gels together into something great. The standout element of the game is the graphics, which are really good. High-quality textures in the first person segments, and really nice overall design in the isometric mode. The problem is that whenever you have particle effects on the screen, your FPS drops from 140-150 to 15-20, and some areas rely heavily on those, compromising framerate. Also there's an overuse of screen blur on the first-person segments, which is just annoying. While I generally love the artstyle, a lot of characters lack portraits and there are little to no animation on the first-person segments, which just looks jarring and reeks of lack of polish. There's no voice acting, just mumbles, which is acceptable but not incredible. There's forgettable music - the best track is the combat track, but it's a bit repetitive. The sound effects on the first-person segments such as microwave sounds, steps running away, phone ringing and background noise are high-quality but feel a bit tacked on. And then, the story. It has good stuff there, but it's lost in its own ambition. The idea that writers can commit book crimes, lose their licenses to write, inhabit books, interact with characters - that is mostly good stuff. The rules are never clear but I'm in for the ride. The main issues I see are with the individual books and the choices system. Each individual book is interesting, but too shallow and short to truly shine and flesh out, and you're over before you get attached to them, just to be thrown into the next one. All the while, there isn't much happening in the first-person segments, so it feels the best parts of the game are over before they matter, and you're stuck with the least fun bits of it progressing at a glacial pace. Then, there are the choices, and here the game is infuriating -- it gives you the illusion of choice, but doesn't respect or persist your choices, always either forcing you to pick what it wants, or just commenting on your (usually binary) choices on a very heavy-handed manner, that diminished the impact of them. For a game about books and writing, its writing is quite poor. Ain't that ironic? In short, I came here after playing Disco Elysium hearing I might like this one, but this game is so confused, rushed, unpolished and poorly-written that it can't be recommended. Is it broken or trash? No. But it still hardly deserves your time.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.

It reminds me of a point-and-click adventure where you need to interact with objects to progress, minus all the hard stuff of figuring out which item is used for what object. Well, there are still some puzzles and the gameplay is similar to that, but they are simpler and require you to read the text properly rather than using your brain. Each chapter happens in a book with its own setting. You need to traverse the whole building or city, interacting and talking with anyone that you find to find clues or a way to unlock the next area. You need to hover over the whole room to search for interactable objects, but I don't find them too hard to find. The top-down perspective does a good job of making each room not too big and easier to search. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3534509134 Your choice will affect you in the game. Some will reduce your health, others will lead you to fight. If you are lucky, you might even be rewarded. There are still ways to finish the chapter if you got through all the penalties in the game; it's just that you might miss some items that might help you in some fights. Min-maxing only helps in your current chapter, though. It's best to do it if you are a completionist who just wants to get everything in a run, but if you are not, that's fine as well. There is no achievement to get everything a chapter has to offer, and whatever you possess in a chapter won't even be carried to the next one. All chapters start you fresh with only skills retained. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3451878790 The game gives an illusion of choice. Some chapters might end with you choosing between two options, but they will eventually lead to the same outcome. The only freedom you get is the way of finishing each chapter, which can be different based on what you do in that playthrough. You can just choose all bad choices, which is obvious, by the way, and get punished for it, or just choose all the good choices to be safe from it. Combat Combat is pretty lax. You can die, and the game will sometimes revive you at the same battle, maintaining the enemies' health that you have reduced before you die. Sometimes, the game might even skip the fight completely. What starts as a risky move from your silly actions eventually means nothing in your progression unless you want to min-max. You will get a skill upgrade at the start of each chapter. This upgrade is the only one that will be retained in each chapter and will help you in combat. Some enemies might hit hard, and you can make those amount to nothing by outdamaging them or protecting yourself with a shield. You can choose between two skill upgrades each day. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750684810 Each skill you possess has a different focus. Combat is turn-based, and since you can see what enemies will do in the next turn, you can choose your move based on the situation accordingly. Healing items can be used once per turn, which is useful if you want to tank the damage. But again, you might not even need that considering the game doesn't even punish you for losing, except if you want to get certain achievements. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 16h. I spent 2.5h more to replay some chapters, mainly to make a guide. You need to replay one chapter twice to get an achievement, but it shouldn't be that long if you skip all the texts. The game is quite lenient on mistakes. You can ask your partner what to do if you are stuck, and the worldbuilding is small enough for you to explore everything without getting overwhelmed. I also like that you can min-max the game by getting every object that the chapter has to offer. Sadly, two chapters won't allow you to craft all available objects, and one of them will cause you to miss some objects because of it. As someone who likes to min-max, it feels disappointing even though these eventually will amount to nothing once you move on to the next chapter.
Conclusion
The Bookwalker is a game for those who enjoy reading a story and exploring the world. You need to interact with all objects and figure out how each object is connected to the others. It's fun figuring out the connection while trying to min-max everything. Those who don't like to min-max also can enjoy the nice narrative, which feels fresh every chapter due to how the game is designed. I like how the dialogues are easy to digest and the exploration gameplay as well. If you enjoy a narrative adventure game that focuses on problem-solving with low stakes, buy this game.
The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales —
I want to start off by saying I do like the idea of the game. It is totally playable and most of the puzzling/detective work is relatively enjoyable. The combat I found a pointless addition, with the game often straining the plot to include it. The first person segments are a neat novelty at first, but also feel a bit underdeveloped. Overall though, this is a narrative forward game where the narrative simply isn't very well executed. There aren't any translation errors per se, and it's definitely in totally parsable English, but it has that stilted feeling of being in a different language originally. My main complaint though is with the ending, and here's what makes me think the game isn't really worth playing unless you just love this style of gameplay. Throughout the game, you dive into a half dozen different books to steal mythical objects. This is a cool premise, but we're basically never given a clear picture of the rules and mechanics of the world, so the whole thing feels nonsensical by the end of the game. There is also sort of an overarching mystery about the protagonist and why he needs to resort to diving into books and stealing artifacts in the first place. The reveal of this is very underdeveloped and underwhelming, and it means that the six or so hours it takes to finish the game don't really pay off at all. The final "set-piece" if you want to call it that feels devoid of any real logic or catharsis, and after a shoddily animated first person cutscene, the "ending" is mostly conveyed with white text on a black background. It isn't satisfying, and it barely makes any sense. Then the game serves up an epilogue that, while ambitious, doesn't really land at all either. It seems like meticulous care went into the first half of the game, and then somewhere during the second half they ran out of money and had to rush to give the game an ending. As far as I'm concerned, the team could have cut one or two of the books you dive into, as only two or three of them really drive the plot forward. Their efforts would have been better spent on making sure the overall narrative had a satisfying conclusion. I don't regret buying it, especially on sale at less than $4, and I would certainly give the developers another shot, as the gameplay works throughout. However, the story here isn't developed enough for six or seven hours of playtime. It feels like a 12 page short story for a writing class that needed a lot more fleshing out. It's inventive, and I applaud that, but it isn't grounded or really moving at all.
