Game is interesting. There’s good things and then there’s bad ones. I really enjoyed the combat mechanics. It’s easy to learn, you get a turn then the enemy gets a turn, and you repeat this. However, if you kill an enemy that doesn’t mean you get an extra turn. It just means enemy troops get turns faster. And if you kept a strong enemy for the last two. Then you’re in trouble because he can destroy your whole team. I didn’t really like this, that you get punished for eliminating enemies, but it did add to strategy, as you needed to position your guys better to kill the rest. There’s also caravan managing where you need to keep everyone in good spirits as well as fed. I think this was an interesting idea but not executed that well. You see to buy supplies you need renown. To get renown you either fight or do a random event. But there’s only a few random events that give renown. There’s a lot more fights. Every enemy that you kill nets you 1 renown. Some bigger enemies even give you two. Some battles can have two phases which means more enemies and more renown. However, fights become harder, and your guys get injured. If they are injured their stats drop. And if their stats drop, you’re not winning fights. And if you’re not winning fights, you don’t get the renown… You need to prioritize what you want to do. Also, renown is the only way you can upgrade your characters. Which you need to do because the last boss fight is really hard. There’s just not enough renown in the game to keep every aspect positive. There’s also the morale system which keeps going down every single day. Morale is important for extra moves, stronger attacks basically. To keep morale up you need to rest and camp, but every time you do rest you use up supplies. Again, we are back at renown to buy enough supplies. I don’t know. I guess the game is forcing you to focus on just a few characters while the rest are irrelevant, basically side characters that are there for distraction. Also, the game has choices that let you decide who you bring to the end. Some characters can die, so they do matter. The choices also carry over to the sequel from my understanding. The story is decent, and art as well. All in all, it’s like I said an interesting game. I liked it. But I don’t think it’s for everyone.

This game has deep, turn based strategy game-play coupled with a compelling story

This game is the first of a trilogy and although it can stand alone, it really feels more like a slightly elongated tutorial for a good portion of it. Save data can be transferred between games so really this game should be viewed as more of a part 1 and it's really paced as such. This is not to say the game isn't fun. The story is in the choices matter style and decisions presented to you carry real weight. I've seen others say they don't like it when the outcome of a choice is unclear, but that is one of the core mechanics of the game. You know just about as much as the character you're making a decision for and just trying to do what you believe is best. This does mean that the for some the game seems more unfair, but along with adding replay-ability I think games that aren't afraid to give players consequences aren't common enough and adds a sense of individuality while maintaining the story already in play. Music, sound, and storytelling are all engaging and well made. Even small things like the size of your group or the amount of your provisions can change how your party appears while traveling which shows a great attention to detail and in some cases a large amount of responsibility as the game happens to pan out and you can see just how many people have decided to follow you. On the side of the combat I'm more half and half. There are plenty of unique features to it and the depth and complexity is not lacking, however I find the combination of it all to clash a bit. Damage is tied to health, all well and good in its own right, until you get a new team member and you can't level them up at all because their starting health is low, making them not only squishy but unable to do damage and level up effectively. In order to train them you essentially need to cripple your team and feed them enemies. On easier levels this can be mildly circumnavigated by training, but on the harder ones there is a good chance you lose people faster than you train them running yourself right into a softlock. The combat itself is interesting and fun, but its overarching consequences take away from the other choices I get to make by reducing the viable choices I can make.
Have you heard of road movies? Now you can see road game. Though it’s a very hardcore rpg road game, that contains a lot of hard choices and pretty bleak fantasy world. Banner Saga immediately attracts attention with its beautiful hand drawn very distinct graphic style - everything from npcs to background done with great attention to details without cutting corners. Since there are tons of characters encountered throughout the journey with very varied personalities, each of them had to have looks to match and artists totally delivered. Sounds are superbly done, hits, groans and so on are on mark to deliver what’s going on. Music transforms along with places and actions to add to atmosphere, so it became essential part of experience. Gameplay consists of your traveling caravan management, which includes both making sure you have enough resources and there are no conflicts and choosing road, taking quests and solving relationship issues both in towns and those that may happen while you are on the road. There are bunch of events that might happen and what you decide will have consequences that are not really possible to predict a lot of times. Some things that you did back at start of the game could come bite you in behind in the end, and there would be nothing you could do about it by that point. Welcoming group you encountered might either strengthen your force or lead you to ambush, start infighting, rob you of some of your precious resources and there is not really much you could do about it. Second part is combat itself when you encounter definitely hostile enemies or when your decisions lead to confrontation. Fights are done on grid based field where maneuvering and cc skills play essential part, cause often what you’re fighting is overwhelmingly stronger force, so there is no way to win in direct confrontation. There are also bunch of intricacies like armour being separate part from hp and needing different dmg type to get rid of, but it could be roughly similar to other games. Plot starts very simple but gets complicated and include more and more story threads very fast. There are both very personal and whole world encompassing issues that get entangled with each other. Be ready for lots of unexpected turns, revelations and tragic events cause storytelling is a very strong point here. Can’t say more in fear of spoiling it, so you got to believe me it’s very much worth experiencing.
