Teslagrad is a severe case of false advertising. It masquerades as a whimsical, hand-drawn indie adventure featuring a cute little boy in a scarf, but it’s actually a psychological torture simulator sponsored by the ghost of Nikola Tesla. You play as a silent orphan who clearly skipped primary school to accidentally earn a PhD in electromagnetic engineering. Your grand quest is to overthrow a tyrannical king, but instead of giving you a sword or a gun, the universe hands you a pair of glowing oven mitts that manipulate magnetic polarity. The rules are simple: red attracts blue, red repels red. Sounds easy, until a minor miscalculation causes the laws of nature to violently yeet a 10-year-old child into a grid of high-voltage neon lasers at Mach 3. To make things better, it’s a strict one-hit-death game. You will spend more time watching an elementary schooler get brutally vaporized or crushed by magnetic blocks than actually making progress. The boss fights look like beautiful animated sequences, but they play like a personal vendetta against your sanity. Verdict: 10/10. A fantastic way to realize that failing high school physics can and will eventually come back to haunt you in a video game.
Good, if simple, Metroidvania. The world layout is rather simple for a Metroidvania. It's also rather short for a Metroidvania. Game starts up in some random non-system language. Get suck on some puzzle(?) screen 5-10 minutes in with flashing lights and no hints.
Overall, this was a very fun game to play. I beat the game with all 36 capsules (I don't know what they were, maybe they were power cells or scrolls or something else) in about 9 hours of play (8 hours before I beat the final boss the first time with some capsules missing), and I enjoyed it very much. I thought the difficulty of the game was pretty good for me; the puzzles were relatively challenging without being too hard and the bosses were pretty well balanced (although perhaps slightly more on the unforgiving side than I would like, but not by much). I think the capsules were well placed and a good extra challenge to not only find but figure out how to get to; although a few were very easy to find and obtain. Something I really liked, but could be a drawback for others, is that there were no tutorials or pieces of dialogue in the game, meaning you had to figure everything out for yourself. There were a couple of graphics to help, but generally it was left to the player. It did mean I didn't realise there was a map and list of obtained capsules available to me until I looked at the control screen after I beat the game, but I guess that's on me lol. I have a few minor nitpicks to share, though: - When using toggle cloak, it was a bit annoying that it always defaulted the player to the glove ability after respawning rather than the option that was most recently selected; it meant I jumped into some electric deathbed expecting to use my hood a fair few times. - I would like to be able to navigate the map menu a little rather than just having a static image that I can slightly zoom in and out of. - Sometimes it was a bit tedious travelling from point A to point B, whether by walking a bit distance or by using that elevator in the main hub of the castle area. - I think there should have been achievements for beating the game and getting the special ending rather than only giving achievements for each of the capsules the player got. I would probably have put one for each boss as well, but I'm only writing this because it felt weird to not get an achievement for beating the game either normally or with 100% completion. - As mentioned above, some of the capsules were pretty trivial to obtain. Overall, would recommend the game to others, good job!
