T.W.I.R.L.

Where do I begin with T.W.I.R.L.? To start, the visuals of this game are a gorgeous twist on the nostalgia and familiarity of the PSX era. There's a paradoxical warmth and coldness to the setting. Both because you wake to the crisp snow falling outside the window of a comfy Christmas interior, but also with the foreboding religious presence that almost overpowers the comfort of the character's home. Every now and then, the PSX graphics will fade to the black and white of scratchy, hand-drawn illustrations. From the very beginning you'll feel like this place that's meant to be your haven has something more sinister following you. For the playstyle, the inspiration from P.T. is clear. It's a walking simulator with repeating loops set in almost deafening silence. The pace is slow, with loneliness building the horror rather than a reliance on jumpscares. While the game itself isn't that long, there are multiple endings for you to pursue, and thankfully a chapter select for you to easily go back and find the others once you're done. On a deeper level, I'll talk about the story. T.W.I.R.L. is a very raw and authentic portrayal of inner turmoil when it comes to self-discovery. Not much is said, but it gives you just enough to understand what's in the unspoken. The shame, fear, and longing are palpable throughout but it's ultimately your own compassion and empathy that will make or break this game for you. I applaud the devs for telling such a vulnerable tale in such a respectful way.

生き延びるためにクローゼットから出た人間として、生き延びるためにクローゼットに隠れ続ける選択をした者の物語は、憤懣やるかたない一方で洞察ももたらしてくれました。 このゲームで起きていることは、どこかで起きている実話です。 願わくば、二度とこんな思いをする人が居ない世界になりますよう。

Amazing game! I LOVE IT!

A really good game. I liked the trailer, it looked interesting - I hadn't really been paying close attention the past few days, I just heard "Psychological Horror" and I'm always down for that xD But it was so much more than just Psychological Horror, it's a masterpiece in its own way. At one point I did think I was going to have a seizure, because a) I didn't see the interaction button and b) the black and white graphics (you'll know when you get to that part) were too much, because everything was moving. BUT, and I want to emphasize this, the game was a brilliant depiction of a young person finding themselves while growing up in a traditional and religious family. I personally could really empathize with the child's emotional world and the subtle, gentle nudging in the right direction (regarding the ending) is what made T.W.I.R.L so interesting for me. The secret ending that speaks to you as the player - you can really tell how much love and work went into this game. I can only recommend it to everyone.
