Gameplay is really solid. Voice acting is a bit rough and framerate seemed to drop on level 2. "Bricking" seems to be a semi-common issue where I run out of ammo and don't have enough SYNC power, so I just kinda have to run around for a bit (especially on the boss where you can run out of SYNC targets and have to wait for the powerup). I wish there was a melee option as well so I could do something when empty. Music slaps too. Overall, I enjoyed it despite it being kinda short.

"SYNC" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. Like many student projects, this one takes an existing premise and does something new. Similar in a perhaps unintentional way to the 1980's home computer game Paradroid, you take over robots and use their distinct abilities to help you fight. Where Paradroid had a minigame to defeat the robot and assume control, here, you "SYNC". Some clever ideas but this is let down by lack of content, lack of polish, and despite not being in "Early Access" this comes across as a beta version of what should have, but won't be a full game. The graphics aren't great, somewhat low poly, vaguely "cel shaded", but they just don't come across as well polished and look a bit clunky. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.
