Good Game
Stone Age Wars, developed by Permafrost Studio and published by Back To Basics Gaming, is a compact arcade-style action RPG that leans heavily into old-school design philosophies while dressing them up in a playful prehistoric theme. Rather than attempting to simulate historical accuracy or deliver a deep narrative, the game focuses squarely on immediate gameplay satisfaction, placing the player in control of a group of Stone Age warriors tasked with surviving an escalating gauntlet of enemies. From the outset, the tone is simple and direct: progress through wave after wave of foes, grow stronger through upgrades, and test your reflexes and planning against increasingly demanding encounters. The heart of the experience lies in its wave-based combat structure. Each battle pits your squad against swarms of enemies that grow tougher and more numerous over time, eventually culminating in boss encounters that demand sharper execution and better preparation. What sets Stone Age Wars apart from many similar arcade titles is its symbol-drawing mechanic, which requires players to physically draw shapes to activate special abilities. This system adds a layer of skill and tension that goes beyond simple button presses, as poor execution can mean wasted abilities or missed opportunities at critical moments. In the heat of battle, the need to draw accurately while managing enemy pressure gives combat a surprisingly engaging rhythm. Progression plays a major role in maintaining momentum. With a wide range of equipment, masks, weapons, and class options available, players are constantly encouraged to experiment with different builds and team compositions. Each class brings its own strengths and weaknesses, whether focused on durability, damage output, or support, and the steady stream of upgrades creates a satisfying sense of growth. While the systems themselves are relatively straightforward, they combine well enough to make each successful run feel earned, especially when overcoming difficult waves that initially seem overwhelming. Visually, Stone Age Wars embraces simplicity. The art style is functional and intentionally modest, using a primitive aesthetic that aligns with the game’s setting rather than striving for visual spectacle. Animations are basic but readable, ensuring that players can quickly understand what is happening during chaotic encounters. Sound design follows a similar philosophy, offering clear feedback for attacks and abilities without attempting to dominate the experience. The result is a presentation that may not be memorable on its own but supports the gameplay effectively without unnecessary distraction. Replayability is bolstered by the sheer number of waves, bosses, and unlockable options available. Although the core loop remains consistent throughout, the challenge curve and variety of possible builds give players reasons to return and refine their strategies. At the same time, the game’s indie roots are evident in occasional balance issues and spikes in difficulty that can feel abrupt rather than carefully tuned. These rough edges may frustrate some players, but for others they contribute to the game’s arcade-like identity, where persistence and mastery are part of the appeal. In the end, Stone Age Wars succeeds as a focused, no-nonsense arcade RPG that values gameplay clarity and mechanical engagement over narrative depth or technical polish. It’s a title best enjoyed in short, intense sessions, where its “one more wave” design shines brightest. While it may not satisfy players looking for complex strategy or expansive content, it offers a surprisingly addictive and energetic experience for those who appreciate straightforward progression, skill-based combat, and a charmingly primitive setting.
